I AUTOMOBILE-SIGNAL.
Specification of L'etters Patent. Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Application filed lFeb ruary 17, 1919. te m. 277,563.
vehicle'signals and has for its object to pro VLClG means tor indicating the various'movements of a vehicle.
7 Another object of the inventionis to provide a signal device having sign plates which act conjointly to indi "ate the movement or prospective action of a vehicle.
With the above and other objects in view, which will be pointed out in the following specification, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of one form of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of a sign plate,
3 is a similar view of another sign plate,
Fig. at is a section on line AA, Fig. when completely closed,
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the device,
Fig. 6 is an elevation of another form of the invention,
Fig. 7 is a detail elevation of a sign plate,
Fig. 8 is a similar view of another plate,
Fi 9 is a similar view of two plates,
Fig. 10 is an elevation of the device showing a sign plate in operative position, and
Fig. 11. is a section on line B-B, Fig. (3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates one form of my signal,
which consists of a casing 2 held by a bracket 3 to a windshield 4 or any other convenient part of an automobile or other vehiele. Pivotally mounted at 4 in the case 2 is a plurality of signal plates 5, G and 7, each having a different sign thereon such as Turn, Slow, Stop, etc., to indicate what action is about to be taken by the vehi-' cle other than going straight ahead at ordinary speed. The plates 5, 6 and 7 are controlled by springs 8, 9 and 10 adapted to normally hold the plates thrown out of the case and are held in the case by means of catches 11, 12 and 13 engaging the lugs 14, 15 and 16 on said plates. By pressing either of said catches, the plates are released to be thrown out to exposed position by the controlling springs.
.The plate 6, which is marked with the sign Turn, has a large centrally disposed opening therein in order to expose the sign Slow onthe center of plate5, whereby the two signs Turn and Slow may be indicated at one and the same time, thus indicating that the vehicle is to turn and will slow down in making the turn, thus warning traflic behind how to proceed. A mir ror 17 is provided on the near side 18 of the case in order that the driver may see what is behind hisvehicle. l
Each of the sign plates should have a back ground of a'diflerent color, each color indicating the same thing as the sign word, in orderthat the driver of a vehicle in the rear may know the meaning of the particular sign exposed even if he is too far behind to read the Word or if he cannot read.
In Figs. 6 to 11, I show a modification of the invention in which slidable plates 19, 20 and 21 are provided in the case 22. Handles 2 24 and 25 are provided on the plates rectively and each handle has a sign to coniorm to the sign on its plate.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is 1. A vehicle signal consisting of a plurality of alining sign plates, one of which has an opening to expose a sign therebehind,,and a casing in which the plates are mounted.
2. A vehicle signal consisting of a plurality of alining sign plates, one of which has an opening to expose a. sign therebehind, and a casing in which the plates are mounted, and handles rigidly connected to each plate whereby one or two of the plates are projected from this casing.
3. The described device consisting of a casing and a plurality of flat sign plates mounted within the casing, and rigidly connected handles for said plates, whereby they may be manually moved to project outwardly of said casing, signs on all of said plates and means whereby signs on two plates may be exposed at one and the same time, said means consisting of anopening in one of said plates.
4. A vehicle signal embracing a plurality of fiat signal plates and a casing therefor, one of said plates having an opening therein to expose a sign on another of said plates.
5. The described device consisting of a casing and a pluralityof flat'signfplates mounted within the casing, and rigidly connected handles for said plates, whereby they may be manually moved to project out ,wardlyof said casing, signs on all of said plates and means whereby signs on two plates may be exposed at one and the same time, said means consisting of an opening in 10 of said plates arranged in alinement with one of'sai d plates, and the sign on another said opening.
6 A vehicle signal consisting of a plurality of: alining sign plates, one of which has an opening to expose a sign therebehind, and a casing in which the plates are mounted, and handles'rigidly connected to each plate whereby one or two of the plates are projected from this casing, said plates being pivoted to the casin 7. A signal embracing a plurality of flat si n plates arrangedone in front of the ot er and means for exposing signs on more than one of said plates at a time, said means consisting of an opening in one of said plates. I
9. A signal embracing a plurality of flat sign plates arranged one in front of the other and means for exposing signs on more than one of said plates at a time, said means consisting of an opening in one of said plates, said plates being spring controlled are projected from this casing, said plates being pivoted to the casing, and reversible upon being projected froln the casing.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
