UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
JOSEPH TAKAGS', 0F WESTVILLE, ILLINOIS.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TAKACS, a citizen of Hungary, residing at WVestville in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rail joints.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a rail joint in which the meeting ends of the adjacent rail sections may be easily and quickly secured together and held' against accidental movement without the use of bolts and the like. 1
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rail joint of this character in which the means for locking the joint may be secured to the ties of the road bed, so as to prevent movement of the securing means and accidental separation of the joint.
Another object is the provision of anovel form of chair, which provides a seat for the joint, the base of the chair forming a wear plate, by which the joint locking means are carried, the construction forming a strong and durable joint for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a rail joint embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2' is an end view of the same, the rail being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view through the joint with'the rail shown by dotted lines.
Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the chair. 7
Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the clamps.
Referring to the drawings in detail,
wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the adjacent rail sections are indicated by the letter B. These rail sections have their abutting ends joined together by means of the improved joint. This latter comprises a chair, which is formed of a base plate 10, which acts as a wear plate beneath the rail ends, as will be understood. Projecting inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.
and upwardly from one longitudinal edge of the base plate 10, is a connecting bar, this bar including an inclined portion 11, which is adapted to engage over the base flange 12 of the rail sections, and a substantially vertical portion 13, which enters the fishing space of the rail and contacts with one face of the web 1 1 of the rail. The connecting bar is reinforced by means of ribs 15 and 16, the latter being located adjacent each end of the bar and being provided with spike notches 17. The opposite edge of the base plate is provided with a longitudinally extending shoulder 18, for engagement with the edge of the base flange 12 of the rail. Also extending along this edge of the base plate is a flange 19, the latter being provided with a head 20, so as to form a substantially T-shaped flange, which extends throughout the length of the base plate.
The adjacent rail ends are positioned within the chair seat and are held in such position through the medium of clamps 21, one of which is located near each end of the chair. These clamps each comprise a main portion 22, which is provided with a transversely disposed T-shaped slot 23, which is adapted to receive the T-shaped flange of the chair. This slot 23 is so positioned with respect to the end of the clamp as to cause the latter to tightly engage the adjacent face of the rail rib when the clamps are in position. The underface of the clamp is formed of an inclined portion 24 for contact with the upper surface of the base flange of the rail. Each of the clamps carries an extension 25, which is provided with openings 26. These extenends of the ties of the road bed and suit- Patented J uly'27 1920. Application filed July 26. 1919. able spikes or other fastening devices driven through the openings 26 into the ties to hold the clamps in position.
The base plate 10 is further provided details of construction and the right is 110 point of Having described the invention, what is claimed is A rail joint comprising a chair inel'ud 1ng a base plate, a connecting bar extending inwardly and upwardly from one edge of the base plate over thebase flange of the rail and entering the fishing space of the latter for contact with the rail web, a
T-shaped flange extending along the 0p posite edge of the base plate, a clamp removably positioned at each end of the T- shaped flange and-slidably engaging the latter for contact with the adjacent face of the rail web and an extension provided on each clamp and adapted to be secured to the ties of a road bed.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature. 20'
