Description

R. HARRO 'N; FAN ADJUSTMENT.
APPLICATION FILED NEE-12, 1.917. I
Patented Jui 27, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAY HAImoUN, or" HIGHLAND PARK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR ro HARROUN MOTORS CORPORATION, or WAYNE, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE.
FAN ADJUSTMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY HARROUN, a citizen of the United States Of America, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Adjustments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a fan construction or mounting and refers more particularly to a new and improved adjustment mechanism for the fan and generator drive belt.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a construction in which the belt employed for driving the, fan and generator can be readily adjusted to the proper tension. Another object of the invention is to provide a fan shroud or protecting housing for the fan. The invention also resides in various details of construction and such arrangements and combinations of parts as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a vertical section through the front part of an automobile to which my invention has been applied;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view showin diagrammatically the fan adjustment;
Fig. is an enlarged view of the parts shown in section in Fig. 2.
In the drawings I have shown only such parts of the front of an automobile as are necessary to understand the fan mounting and adjusting mechanism. In detail A designates the front cross member Of the automobile frame and B the radiator having the usual header C. Just in the rear of the radiator is positioned the fan D and in addition to the parts, above described, I have provided a fan shroud or protecting casing E which has a flange F fastened to the header, a transverse flange Gr secured to the other portions of the radiator. Suitable packing H is provided between the supporting cross member A and the lower part of the radiator.
The fan D is carried by a sleeve J revolubly mounted on a shaft K and driven from a cam shaft pulley L by means of a belt M and fan pulley N. As shown in Fig. 2, the belt M also extends over the generator pulley 0 s9 that both the fan pulley and generator Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1920.
Application filed February 12, 1917. Serial No. 148,210.
pulley O are driven from the cam. shaft pulley L, the latter in turn being driven.
from the engine shaft in: the usual manner.
In, order to permit a proper tensioning, of the fan and generator drive belt, I employ the following tensioning adjusting mechanism. The supporting shaft K for the fan is provided with an offset portion P and terminates in a horizontal portion Q, projecting into the sleeve R which is secured by bolts it to the cylinder casting S, EX- tending down through a bearing T on the sleeve is a set screw T which bears against a flattened portion U on the projecting end Q, of the shaft K, as shown in detail in Fig. 3. By turning down the set screw T the shaft K is caused to rotate rocking the offset portion P, and this will cause a movement of the portion of the shaft carrying the sleeve J and fan pulley N away from the cam shaft pulley, thus tightening the belt. In order to prevent the shaft K from being rocked too far, the housing is preferably provided with a shoulder W forming a stop for the lower end of the set screw.
With a fan and generator pulley construction, such as above described, the belt can be properly tensioned by simply turning the set screw T. While the construction has a further advantage that no additional complicated tightening mechanism is required for adjusting the parts. Changes however can be made from the details of construction shown and described, within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A combined support and tightener, comprising a shaft having offset portions, one of which carries a pulley wheel and the other of which has a bearing surface, a bearing for said last-mentioned offset portion, a set screw engageable with said lastmentioned offset portion to rock said shaft, and means for limiting the rocking movement of said shaft.
2. The combination with a shaft, having parallel portions connected by an off-set, of a fan mounted upon one of said parallel portions, and a set screw engaging the other of said parallel portions and adapted when tightened to rock said shaft to adjust the position of the fan.
3. The combination with an engine, of a pulley wheel mounted thereon, a fan also mounted on said engine, a pulley Wheel for said fan, a belt extending over said pulley wheels, a shaft having parallel portions connected by an off-set, one of said parallel portions supporting said fan and the other of said parallel portions having a flattened portion, a bearing upon said engine for said last 7 mentioned parallel portion, and a threaded adjusting member mounted on said bearing and engageable with said flattened portion for rocking said shaft to adjust the position of said fan and to tension said belt. r
4. A combined support and tightener, comprising a shaft having off-set bearing portions, one of said bearing portions, carrying afan, a bearing for the other of said bearing portions, a set screw mounted upon said bearing and means upon the other of said bearing portion and engageable with said set screw whereby, when said set screw 7 bearing portion and a set screw mountedon sald bearing and'engageable with said flattened portion to rock' said shaft.
6. A eomblned support and tightener,
comprising a shaft having off-set bearing portions, one of which carries a fan and the other of whlch has a bearing surface, a bearing for said last mentloned ofl-set portion, a set screw engageable with said last mentioned off-set portion to rock said shaft, and a stop upon said bearing engageable with said set screw to limit its movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
' BAY HARROUN.
