Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,799, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WLLLIAM HENRY HAM- MOND, of Syracuse, county of Morgan and State of Missouri., have invented an Improvement in Fruit-Cans, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.

General Description.
A is a cylindrical tin can, with a bottom, a, attached in the ordinary manner. B is an annular bead or groove, pressed interiorly into the body of the can A near its top. The upper edge of the can A is turned inward, and then hammered or rolled to flare it slightly outward above the bead B, as shown at Fig. 3. O is the cap-a plain flat disk, with its outer edge turned downward to give it stiffness and form a suitable rest on the bead B, as plainly seen at Fig. 3. D is a handle on the upper side of the cap O, for convenience in lifting it. E, Fig. 3, is the sealing-wax.
The operation of my invention is deemed obvious from an inspection of the drawing. The can being filled with fruit prepared and heated in the ordinary manner, the lid O may be put in place and pressed down until its edge rests on the beadB, when a small amount of ordinary sealin g-wax may be poured around and in the joint between the lid O and can A. To remove the cap O the sealing-wax may be removed or heated and the cap lifted by the handle.
It will be plainly seen that this construction of top obviates the necessity of a tapering or conical-shaped can, and also dispenses with flange soldered around the top, thus producing a cheaper can, and one having many other obvious advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The can A having a Haring mouth, in comu bination with the lid O having an inwardlyturned ilanged edge, so constructedat'hat when pressed into the month of the can it will be held in position by contact of the surface alone, substantiallylas and for the purpose specified.
