Specification of Letters 1atent. Patented July 27,
Application filed December 27, 1918. Serial No. 268,441.
enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for stop and waste cocks, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device arranged to be detachably fitted into the waste hole for controlling the flow of water therefrom, when the valve is shut off, for permitting the pipes or other plumbing in the house to be repaired, which prevents the waste of the water and eliminates the necessity of catching the same, so that the water will not flow over the floor or onto articles adjacent to the cock.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved plug threaded into the waste hole of a stop and waste cock, so as to prevent the flow of water therefrom when the cock is turned off, said plug being so constructed as to permit the escape of water from the pipe when so adjusted and to guide the water downward and thus prevent the same from flowing into the persons face operating the cock.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved waste plug for stop and waste cocks, which is of simple and durable construction, one that can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stop and waste cock with the attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the same, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the waste plug.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a stop and waste cock plug of the ordinary or any preferred construction-includinga body 2 receiving the rotatable plug or valve 3, which is fitted in the body in the ordinary method and operated by the. handle 1-. The rotatable valve 3 is provided with the ordi nary water passage 5 and the relatively small transverse water passage 56. The body '2 is provided with an outstanding nipple 7, which registers with the waste hole 8, Which permits the water toflow from the pipes in a house when the plug 3 is turned, so as to prevent the flow of Water through the water way 5. The nipple 7 is providedwith internal screw threads 9 in which is threaded the improved plug 10. The improved plug 10 includes the shank or stem 11, which is externally screw threaded and provided with the annular shoulder 12 adjacent the rear end thereof, and the thumb piece 13 by means of which the plug is readily turned. A suitable Washer or gasket 14: isplaced upon the stem 11 and in engagement with I the collar 12 and forms means for engaging the outer surface of the nipple 7 to stop the leakage of water around the plug. The inner end of the nipple has the bore thereof reduced and tapered as at 15 and the inner end of the plug is tapered as at 16'and is adapted to engage the restricted portion of the bore and form an additional means for preventing the leakage of water from the nipple. The stem is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 17, which per-- mits the water to flow from the nipple, when the plug is adjusted so that the gasket 14 i is out of engagement with the outer end of the nipple. The plug can be so turned as to position the groove 17 at the bottom thereof, which in connection with the collar 12 will;
deflect the water downward.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved adjustable plug is provided, for controlling the flow of water from the waste hole and thus permit the plumbing to be repaired Without necessitating the draining of the water from the pipes. The plug also prevents dripping of the water from the waste hole, which is usual in valves of this type when the same have become slightly worn.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet
realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, propor-. 131011 and arrangement of parts maybe reset forth.
WhatI claim as new is: -A device .of the character set forth including a body of a valve-having a laterally extending draining nipple provided with internal screw threads, a screw threaded shank threaded into said nipple, a valve seat formed. within the nipple, a pointed end formed'on said shank and adapted to eng-agethe valve seat, an annular collar formed on the other end of the shank and adapted to abut the outer end of the nipple'to cooperate with the pointed end of the shank 2O and valve seat in sealing the nipple said shank having'a groove extending from the pointed end to the collar to permit the escape of fluid from the nipple when the pointed end is unseated and the collar disengaged from the nipple, said collar being adapted to deflect the fluid laterally from the groove, and a handle formed on'said collar.
