ROLLER SKATE WHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 17, 1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY A. HANNUM, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REBEATING ARMS 00., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
ROLLER-SKATE WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1920. Serial No. 366,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, HARRY A. HANNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller-Skate Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, inp Figure 1, a view in side elevation of my improved roller-skatewheel.
Fig. 2, a view'thereof in transverse section.
Fig. 3, a broken sectional detail view showing the tread forming an integral part of the exterior side-plate, before the positioning-shoulder is formed thereupon.
Fig. 4;, a corresponding view after the formation of the positioning-shoulder.
Fig. 5, a similar view showing the edge of the interior side-plate in place against'the said shoulder with the edge of the same spun over it for its retention in place.
My invention relates to an improvement in ball bearing roller-skate wheels of the socalled inclosed type, the object being to produce at a low cost for manufacture, a skatewheel of improved appearance and constructed with particular reference to being easily assembled so as to be free from the wabbling of the wheel on its hub.
With these ends in view, my invention consistsin a ball-bearing skate wheel of the inclosed type, the said wheel having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I employ a struck-up, circular, exterior side-plate 2 formed with an integral tread 3, the outer edge of which is reduced in thickness to produce upon its inner face a positioning-shoulder 4 providing a bearing for the inner face of the outer edge of a circular, interior side-plate 5 which is held in place by having the extreme edge of the tread 3 spun over it to form the retainingfiange 6, whereby the two plates are firmly secured together.
Before the two plates 2 and 3 are assembled, as described, the wheel-hub 7 is inserted between them, this hub having a peripheral race-way 8 for the balls 9 which are also confined by ball-cups 10 produced by strikin up the inner portions of the plates, as 0 early shown in Fig. 2. The said plates are so proportioned, however, that when the edge of the inner plate is brought to a bearing upon the shoulder 4; of the exterior plate, the opposed high points 11 and 12 of the respective plates are held apart to form a compensating-space 13 which permits the forcible closing-in of the ball-cups 10 to the extent required to prevent the wheel proper from wabbling on the hub. This latter is an important feature of my improvement, since it enables everyv wheel to be absolutely corrected after assemblance, in case any wabbling then manifests itself, due to slight inaccuracies in construction or variations in the thickness of the stock.
I claim:
1. A ball-bearing roller-skate wheel of the inclosed type, the said wheel consisting in a hub, and two plates inwardly struck up to form ball-cups and secured together in spaced relation, whereby their oppositely located high points are kept out of contact to provide for correction after assemblance, for the. prevention of wabbling.
2. A ball-bearing roller-skate wheel comprising a hub having a race-way, a struckup exterior side-plate formed with a tread furnished with apositionin -shoulder, and an interior side-plate, the e, ge of which is abutted against the said shoulder and which is held in place by the spinning over it of the edge of the said tread, and the ball-cup portions of the said plates being held apart by the said shoulder to form a compensationspace to provide for correction after as semblance, for] the prevention of wabbling.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY A. HANNUM.
