Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27-, 1920.
Application filed October 10, 1919. Serial No. 329,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR HIDALGO, a citi-.
zen of Chile, South America, residing at Valparaiso, Chile, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicators, of which the following islaspecification.
The present invention relates to duplicators or mimeographs of the class described in the United States Patent #1,220,863 and has for its primary object to provide an improved construction which will render the duplicator practicable, enable its convenient handling and reduce its cost of manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide simplified means for the attachment of the presser plate to the support or body plate.
A further object of this invention is to provide simplified means for the attachment of the ink pad or absorbent sheet to the presser plate.
And a still further object is to provide simplified means for the attachment of the stencil sheet to the presser plate.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Figure l'is a side elevation of my new duplicator; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross sectlon on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 isa section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5-5 of Fig. '2; Fig. 6 is a similar section as Fig. 5 showing a modified form of attachment of the ink pad or absorbent sheet to the resser plate and Fig. 7 is an end view of the presser plate and of the said modified form of attachment of the ink ad.
Referring to t e drawing in detail, 5 denotes the body portion or support of the device which may consist of a ri 'd plate the ends 5 of which are cylindrica ly curved or turned inwardly under the body portion to form retainin members or gu1des.. I prefer to make t e plate 5 of sheet metal or -o ther resilient material so that the downwardly curved ends thereof will act like springs while engaging the presser plate, as will be presently described.
The presser plate 6 is arranged below the body portion 5 and is made preferably of sheet metal. The same is cylindrically curved in longitudinal direction and has its longitudinal edges bent or turned' upwardly to form marginal Walls 6 These walls extend through the major part of the length of the presser plate and are adapted to form a chamben. 10, for the ink smeared over the inner surface of the presser plate, its walls 6 being adapted to prevent the latter from running off the edges of the presser plate and from staining the material on which the duplicator is used. The area or portion of the presser plate intermediate the marginal walls 6 is provided with a plurality of relatively small perforations 6 to permit the ink contained within the chamber 10 to flow onto the inner surface of the ink pad or absorbent sheet 8, which is stretched over the outer surface of the presser plate 6 and also to permit the ink received by the pad and held on the latter by capillary attraction to flow back into the chamber 10 while when using the duplicator the pad is compressed. The ends of the presser plate 6 are turned inwardly to form tubular or rounded portions 6 adapted to be engaged by the resilient retaining members 5 of the body 5 and to hear therein snugly but slidably so that the presser plate is capable of belng removed from the support 5 by sliding it transversely in they retaining members 5 The extreme ends of the retaining members 5 are slightly turned outwardly so that the engagement of the body portion with the presser plate can be easily effected by pressing the former with its retainin members over the rounded or tubular en s of the presser plate, and the retaining members snapping-over the rounded portions of the presserplate. On the other hand, the disengagement of the 'presser plate from the body platecan be easily effected by moving the presser plate laterally, so that its rounded ends slide within the curved retaining members 5.
To facilitate the removal of the presser plate from the body plate 5 and the handling of the presser plate in general so as to avoid staining of the fingers of the user I provide a grasp 7 which in the present embodiment of my invention consists of a relatively broad hook-shaped member. This member is attached to the inner face of the plate.
For the attachment of the ink pad or absorbent sheet 8 I provide the presser plate 6 near its curved ends 6 with a plurality of oblong slots 6 arranged transversely to the presser plate 6. The ink pad has its edges bound by metal strips 11 which are formed with a series of hooks 12 adapted to engage the said slots 6 and thereby retain the ink pad 8 in stretched condition upon the outer face of the presser plate 6.
The metal strips on the ink pad may be dispensed with, and instead of that the latter may be provided with a series of eyelets 13 near each end adapted to engage hooks 14 punched out or otherwise formed at the end portions of the presser plate. This modification is clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
For the attachment of the stencil sheet 9 which is adapted to be placed over the outer face of the ink pad 8, I provide clasps 15. These clasps are in form of metal bands adapted to extend transversely over the outer face of the presser plate and to clamp the stencil sheet. One end of each clasp is hookshaped as at 15 and adapted to pivotally engage a notch 6 provided in the presser plate near the end of one of its marginal walls, so that the clasp may be allowed to tilt laterally. The opposite end 15 of the clasp is curved to form a resilient snap which is adapted to be pressed over the upper edge of the opposite marginal wall 6 of the presser plate. The extreme end of the snap 15 is bent laterally to form a grasp 15 In cross-section the metal-strips are substantially of angular shape, so that the longitudinal edges thereof will bear against the surface of the stencil sheet, as best shown in Fig. 6.
By virtue of my novel construction of the 7 device the attachment of the ink pad and the stencil sheet to the presser plate is greatly simplified and is rendered independent of the attachment of the presser plate to the body plate 5, so thatthe presser plate can be removed from the body plate with the ink pad and stencil sheet retained in position on the presser plate; Likewise is the attachment of the stencil sheet independent of the attachment of the ink pad, so that the stencil sheet can be removed without removing the ink pad. The walls 6 also serve to reinforce the presser plate and to retain the latter in its curved shape.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a duplicator, a presser plate having a hook-shaped grasp.
2. In a duplicator, a presser plate in each end of which are punched out a series of hook shaped members, and an ink pad formed in its ends with corresponding series of eyelets adapted to engage said hook shaped members.
3. In a duplicator, a presser plate, a stencil sheet and 'a removable band shaped clasp at each end for holding said stencil sheet in position on the presser plate, said clasps being adapted to extend transversely over the outer face of said stencil sheet and to snap over the edges of the presser plate.
4. In a duplicator, a presser plate, a stencil sheet, and a band shaped clasp at each end of the presser plate for holding said stencil sheet in position on the latter, said clasps being pivotally connected to one side of the presser plate, and adapted to extend transversely over the said stencil sheet and to snap over the opposite side of the presser plate.
5. In a duplicator, a presser plate, the ends of which are curved inwardly to form cylindrical or tubular portions-and. a plate shaped support the ends of which are curved downwardly and are adapted to snap over the outer faces of said cylindrical or tubular portions of the presser plate and to frictionally engage therewith.
6. In a duplicator, a presser plate, provided with 'end notches, a stencil sheet adapted to be removably placed on the outer face of said presser plate, and band shapedsnap over the opposite edge of the said presser plate.
