IGNITING DEVICE.

improvements in electrical igniters. I
The purpose of the invention is to .prov1de an igniting device whichmay bev arranged over a gas burner and connected with a spark coil so that when the gas is turned on, the device will be operated by the pressure of the gas flowing from the burner, whereby an electric spark will be produced and the gas ignited.
In carrying out the invention a resilient contact member is disposed immediately above one of the jets of a gas burner. A wiping member is hinged so as to normally rest on one of the jets below the contact member so as to be swung upward by the pressure of the gas and wipe along the contact member. The contact member is grounded on the stove and the wiping member is insulated and connected with a spark coil which is connected with a battery, which latter has one side grounded on the stove. The wiping member is counter-balanced so as to fall back onto the jet when the gas is turned off, the device thus being automatic in its operation.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a gas burner equipped with a device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the contact finger, and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the wiper and its support.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a U-shaped bracket adapted to straddle one of the branches 2 of a gas burner from the under side. Opposed set screws 3 carried by the bracket are engaged with opposite sides of the burner to fasten the bracket thereto. The bracket terminates in upright posts 4 and 5 respectively.
A spring metal finger 6 is fastened on top of the post 4 by a pair of screws 7. An arm 8 is fastened on the post 5 by screws 9 and is insulated from the post by an insulating washer 10 interposed between and an 1 insulating bushing 11 surrounding the screw. The outer end of the arm is forked to receive the trunnions of an angular wiper l2 having a counterbalancing arm 13. The parts are so arranged and positioned that the wiper will normally occupy a horizontal position with its outer extremity resting on one of the jets 14 of the gas burner and its .arm 13 on the opposite side of the perpendicular to counterbalance the wiper and assist in swinging the same upward.
The outer end of the wiper is increased in thickness and reduced to a point 15 which latter has its face serrated or roughened. The finger 6 is inclined upward and has its outer end curved upwardly with its under face 16 serrated or roughened and in the path of the point 15 of the wiper. The face 16 is above the jet 14 but close to it.
A wire A leads from a binding post 17 on the arm 8 to a coil B and a wire C leads from the other pole of the coil to a battery D which has its other pole grounded to the stove (not shown) by a wire E. A wire F leads from one of the screws 7 to a ground on the stove.
When the gas is turned on it will escape from the jet 14 under considerable pressure and will thus swing the wiper 12 upward, in which it will be assisted by the counterbalancing arm 13. As the wiper swings upward its serrated point 15 will wipe along I the face 16 of the spring finger 6 and make and break electrical contact therewith; whereby electric sparks will be produced through the agency of the spark coil B. These sparks will be ample to ignite the gas and the wiper will be swung beyond the face 16 until the arm 13 rests on the arm 8, the finger and the wiper being separated sufficiently to permit a free passage of the gas therebetween. The extreme tip of the finger is curved back out of the path of the wiper.
The finger and wiper stand below the point of combustion of the flame and are thus protected from the intense heat. The
wiper is not raised to a vertical position and is sustained by the upflowing gas. As soon as the gas is cut oifthe wiper falls and comes to rest on the jet 14, ready to again ignite the "as.
W hat I claim is: i
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular burner provided upon its upper portion with gas outlet apertures, of a vertically swinging wiper arranged above the tubular burner and having its forward end adapted to contact with the tubular burner and close a selected aperture thereof, said wiper being provided at its opposite end with a stop element, a support, means pivotally. connecting'siuch opposite end of the wiper with the support so that'the stop element of the wiper may engage with the support and prevent the wiper being moved upwardly to a perpendicular position, a contact element carried by the support and arranged near the said forward end of the wiper and adaptedto be directly engaged by the same when the wiper, is
swung upon its pivot, and a circuit connected with the wiper and the contact element. I
2. In a device-of the character described, the combination with a tubular burner provided upon its upper portion with gas outlet apertures, of a vertically swinging wiper arranged above the'tubular burner and having its forward end widened and adapted to contact with the tubular burner and close a selected aperture thereof, said widened end carrying a tapered forwardly projecting contact, said wiper being provided at its opposite end with anangular stop ele ment, asupport, means for pivotally'connecting said opposite end of the wiper with the support so that the angularstop element will contact with the support and prevent the wiper being swung upwardly to a perpendicular position, a resilient contact connected with said support and arranged to dlrectly engage with the tapered forwardly projecting contact, and a circuit connected 7,
with the wiper and theresilient contact.
, In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
