Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1919. Serial No. 295,140.

Be it known that I, JosnrI-r ALRICK Ln- GRANDEUR, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelers Pin- Pointers, of which the yfollowing is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in jewelers pin pointers and the object of the invention is to devise a simple and cheap device whereby pins may be pointed in a minimum amount of time and with a minimum amount of labor and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
1 indicates a shank which is adapted to be secured in a lathe chuck. 1X indicates the tool body which is formed integral with the shank. 10 indicates an orifice, which extends horizontally through the body, the lower front portion of which is provided with an upwardly inclined face 1. The upper portion is provided with an extension 12, the base 13 of which is located exactly on the center line of the tool. The upper portion of the base of the extension is stepped forwardly at 14 terminating in an upwardly inclined wall 15. 1G indicates an orifice which extends upwardly into the body from the bottom into the orifice 10 and is located centrally of the tool.
3 indicates a pin holder, which comprises a sleeve extending up into the orifice 1G and held therein by a screw 1l. VThe lower portion of the sleeve is flared outwardly at 3*' to form a mouth to receive the pin. The upper end of the holder is notched at 30, the base of the notch being Yexactly upon the center line of the tool and on the center line of the orifice of the sleeve 3. The orifice of the sleeve 8 is provided at its upper end with a tapered portion 3 terminating at itsapex at the upper end of the notch 3".
5 indicates the cutter, which comprises a horizontal portion 5X and a vertical portion 5' provided with a cutting edge 52 which 1s inclined to correspond with the taper of the pin point designed to be cut.
When the cutter is in position within the tool the upper end of the cutting edge as will be clearly seen on referring to Fig. 2 meets the apex of the tapered portion of the orifice of the pin holder 3.
6 indicates a block which is provided with inclined upper and lower ends 6X and 60 fitting the portions 15 and 1 of the body of the tool.r The inner face of the block 6 is provided with an inclined extending portion G0 which is recessed at 62 to allow space for the holder 3 which bears against the horizontal portion 5X of the cutter 5. The upper portion of the block 6 is provided with clearance between such block and the base of the recessed portion 14. 7 indicates a set screw which passes through the block 5 into the body of the tool. By screwing such screw home the upper portion of the block 6 is i drawn inwardly, the lower portion of the block being drawn outwardly, being ful crumed upon the inward extension 6 which bears upon the cutter portion 5 thereby securely holding the cutter in place.
8 indicates a pin. The unpointed pin is passed upwardly through the orifice of the holder 3, the cutting tool being revolved. As the pin 8 is forced upwardly it engages the cutting edge 52 of the knife 5 and as the tool revolves and the pin is forced upward a tapered point is cut which gradually enters and fits the tapered portion 3 of the oriiice of the holder 3 and thereby is held securely and firmly in position so that it cannot get away from the cutter as the cutter revolves in contact therewith gradually cutting the point. The cuttings as they are formed drop away through the back portion of the orifice 10.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a very simple device whereby jewelers pins may be quickly and easily pointed and which dispenses with the expensive machinery which has heretofore been required to perform this operation.
That I claim as my invention is:
1. A jewelers pin pointer comprising a revolving member having a pin receiving orifice extending axially thereinto, a cutter having its cutting edge inclined to correspond with the taper of the pin point and Patented July 27, 1920.
