Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. BARBOUB, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO LEWISB. BRUEN, OF (WOODSIDE) NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-RAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,722, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. BARBOUR, of Louisville, Jefierson county, State of Kentucky, have invented certain Improvements in Reapers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct and provide for a selfoperating rake attached to a mowing-machine, by which the grain is deposited in bundles, and these in rows as the machine moves forward.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure'I is a plan view of a grain-platform embodying my invention. Fig. II is a plan view of the same with the top of the platform removed. Fig. III is a detached cut sectional view through line a; m, Fig. II, showing one of its fingers and its attachments. Fig. IV is a detached plan view of the slide. Fig. V is a detached plan view of the support.
A is the grain-platform frame, in front of which the cutters or knives B B are placed. 0 is a cover, consisting of a slotted frame hinged at a or otherwise fastened to the frame A. D is the solid bottom of the frame A. E E are supports for attaching the rake to the mowing-machine. Two grooves, b and b, are out into the interior sides of the frame A. In these grooves are placed the support d, to which is attached the fingers F F by aid of the axle c. On the top of the support (1 is placed the slide f, into which are out the slots 9 g, which, by aid of the buttons h h, allow the slide to be moved back and forth a certain distance without becoming disengaged from the support d. Other slots, t c, are cut into the slide f, which allow the levers j j of the fingers F F to drop down, when the slide f is moved to one side. To the end of the frame A, under the cover 0,
. is attached a rod, 70, on which one end of the compound levers G G are made to slide by aid of the guides Z Z. The other ends of the levers G G are attached to the support (for the fingers) d, to which the rod m is attached,
on which the levers slide by aid of the guides 'n a. To the bottom D is fastened the slotted piece H, in the slot of which a button, 0, is inserted, which also serves to hold the connection-rod I to the fulcrum p of the levers G G. A lever, J, pivoted to D at q, and going through the frame A, for connecting it to a lever, being operated by the rotation of the wheels of the reaper or by a lever controlled by the foot of the driver, is connected to I at the other end. Near the support E, just over the groove 71 in the frame A, is placed a cam, K. Opposite but at the other end of A, also over the groove 1), are placed two cams, L and M, for the purpose of giving the fingers the required motion. Two springs, N N, placed on the bottom D also assist in giving the fingers the required motion by alternately pressing on or relieving the levers or cranks r 1" attached to the support d by aid of the fastenings s s. A lever, T, or crank attached to .e by striking the cam L raises the fingers F F.
The operation of these several parts herein described is as follows: By pushing the lever J from the driver the fingers F F, which are protruding through the slots of the cover 0, are brought forward, and will then clear the top of the said cover from all grain deposited on the same from the knives or cutters B B, which will be deposited in bundles thrown on the ground in the rear of the supports E E. By pulling the lever J to the driver the fingers will be laid down under the cover 0 by the springs N N releasing their hold on the levers r r, the cam K pushing at the same time the slide f to the side and releasing the levers jj from their supports. The crank T coming in contact with the cam L raises the fingers, which are held in an upright position by aid of the levers 0' a resting on the slide f, which is provided under the said levers by 'aid of the cam M, on which the end of the slide f strikes. Thus, the fingers F F being raised and protruding. through the cover O, the same operation as before described is continued, by which the grain is removed from the platform at will and placed in bundles The combination of the levers G-G, J, and
for binding without assistance of separate I, fingers "F, axle e, support (I, slide f, cams rakes. K L M, springs N, crank T, and levers 1", all
The box formed by the frame A and botconstructed substantially as described.
tom D, covered with the slotted cover (3, will THOMAS P. BARBOUR. take up the loose grain, otherwise lost on the ground, and from where it is removed from Witnesses: time to time when convenient. J R. CULBERTSON,
Having thus fully described my invention, I O. P. SMITH. desire to claim v
