A'IENT JOSEPH R. MORRIS, OB HOUSTON, TEXAS.
EM'PROVEMENT IN LUBRICATING GAR-AXLES.
Specification fonnlng part 0f Letters Patent N0. 134,696, dad7ed J an'uary 7, 1873.
1'0 all whom lt may concem:
Be it known thibl] I, J OSEPH R. l\IOREIS, of fiouston, in tl1e county of Harris and Staoe 0f Texas, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Lubricnting Car-Axles; and I (10 hereby declare ahnt tl1e following is a fnll, dem, and exact deseription of the szune, referenee being had t0 the aecompanying drawing forming a pa1t 0f this speelfication.
The invention consists in a peculiar 1node 0f constructing 2ind eombining an oilelevator, an axle-box, and a journal-box, so thal: the 0il Will be ponred at every revolntlon of a-xle over ashelf, and tl1en allowed to trickle through journal-box and be fed continuously to journal.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal and vertlcal section of axlebox, exhlbiting tl1e jonrnal surmounted by its journal-box ancl with the oilelevaoor attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse section' 0'f Fig. l throngn ehe lines x w. Fig. 3 is a perspective view 0f tlxe journal-box, showing its construetion zmd peculiaritles.
Ain the drawing represents a car-axle; A, a car-wheel ;B, an axle-box O, an oil-box D, a journal-box; ancl E, a spoon-shapedscoop 011 end 0f journal. The axle has ajournal, a, bearing against tl1e journal-box D, whieh is hollow 0n top, has convexities d, holes d and channels d cl The axle-box has a sl1elf, b,
which is apertured at Z) I).
By l3llib eonstruetion, elevator E scoops up tlle oil in the lower part 0f box G, carries in and. empties it upon the shelf b. Thene e lt trickles through holes Z) b npon the eonvexity d, passes down 130 and througlrthe holes d, along the channels 02 under box l), and against tl1e surface of journal a, whieh is thus effectually lubricated.
The oil-box (J is provided witn a reeta-ngular hole, a which is covered by a rennovable door, c, whereby access is conveniently obtained t0 adrnit 0f ehe removal of journalbox D fo1 change 0r repair. The hole 0 allows oiil t9 be poured into the oil-chamber, while hble 0 all0ws an exit for tl1e dirt, sediment, and dregs.
Having thus described my invention, What I clain1 as new, and desire 1:0 secure luy Letters Patent, is
A sooop E rotating in oil-box O, an axle-box hzwing shelf b witl1 holes b{ and a journal-box, D, recessed 011 top, ancl provided witlu holes d zu1d channels d all combind and relatively armnged a-s and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH R. MORRIS.
