Be it known that I, ANDREW J. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alton, in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Turbines, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates'to improvements in elastic fluid turbines and has particular application to a movable stage turbine.
In'carrying out'the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a movable stage elastic fluid turbine wherein the elastic fluid will be successively directed against the turbine wheels in order to rotate such wheels and the shaft upon Which the Wheels are mounted, thereby enabling the fluid motive force to be transformed into mechanical power.
It is also my purpose to provide an elastic fluid turbine wherein the elastic fluid may be directed against the turbine wheels in either direction so that the direction of rotation of the shaft may be reversed.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an elastic flui'l turbine which will features of simplicity, efficiency, and durability, which may be installed and maintained 'at small cost, and which will embody comparatively few parts and these so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a cylindrical casing formed of two semi-circular sections having their meeting edges equipped with outturned flanges 2 provided with alining .bolt holes that receive securing bolts 3, whereby the semicircular sections may be held in casing formation. 4-4 designate end castings that close the ends of the casing 1 and have the inner ends formed with outwardly extending are'views of details of the Specification of Letters Patent.

In the present instance, each casting 4, adjacent to the inner end thereof, is formed with an annular shoulder 10. Arranged within the casing 1 is a cylinder 12 and surrounding said cylinder and in contact therewith is an open ended cylindrical shell 11 having the 'ends in engagement with the shoulders 10 so that longitudinalmovement of the shell 11 within the casing 1 is pre vented.

Arranged concentrically of the shaft9and disposed within the cylinder 12 are disk-like. abutlnents 13 spaced apart equal distances along the shaft and having the peripheries thereof in engagement with the inner surface of the cylinder 12. These abutments 13 are Stationary and are fastened to the cylinder 12 by means of screws 14 or other fastening elements that are passed through the cylinder 12 and into the peripheral edges of the abutments. Arranged within the spaces between the abutments, respectively, are turbine wheels'15 that are the shaft 9 and fastened through the peripheries of the abutments 13 and formed with diagonal blades 16 while the peripheries of the turbine wheels 15 are formed with transverse blades 17. r
The end castings constitute steam chests and leading from the bottom ofeach steam chest and in open communication therewith is a pipe line 18. The outer ends of the pipe lines 18 are connected with a two-way valve 19 that has one side connected with a steam supply pipe 20 and the other side provided with an exhaust port 21.

Thus as the steam passes through the abutments and turbine wheels successively,such steam acts upon the turbine wheels to rotate the latter and the shaft 9, thereby converting the motive power of the elastic fluid into mechanical power. To reverse the turbine, it is only necessary to reverse the position of the two-way valve and when this is done the former live steam chest becomes the exhaust steam chest while the first exhaust steam chest becomes the live steam chest, thereby causing the steam to flow through the abutments and the turbine wheels successively in the reverse direction. I
It will be noted that the pipe lines 18 connect with the respective steam chests at the lower ends of the latter so that any water of condensation in the steam chest may be drained off. In this embodiment of my'invention, the confronting surfaces of the abutments and the turbinewheels are formed with coeperating grooves to receive packing 22 in order to prevent leakage. The bearings 8 are connected with suitable brackets 23 so that the turbine engine may be'appropriately supported. The stem of the two-way valve 19 is equipped with a handle .24 whereby the valve may be op erated. 7
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1- 1 1. An elastic fluid turbine comprising an open ended cylindrical casing, castings closing the ends of said casing and acting in the capacity of steam chests, bearings carried by said castings respectively and alining with each other, a shaft journaled in said bearings, stationary abutments arranged concentrically of said shaft within said casing, and spaced apart equal distances, turbine wheels arranged within the spaces respectively between said abutments and fixed upon said shaft, steam pipes connected with said steam chests respectively at the lower ends thereof, a source of supply, a two-way valve for connecting one of said steam pipes with said source of supply, and the other of said pipes with the atmosphere and vice versa whereby the steam may be directed through the abutments and turbine wheels successively in either direction to rotate said shaft, a cylinder within said casing surrounding said abutments and wheels, fasteners connecting said abutments to said cylinder, and a shell surrounding said cylinder between the latter and said casing and covering said fasteners.

An elastic fluid turbine comprising an open ended cylindrical casing, castings closmg the ends of said casing and acting in the capacity of steam chests, bearings carried by said castings respectively and alining with each other, a shaft journaled in said bearings, stationary abutments arranged concentrically of said shaft within said casing and spaced apart equal distances, turbine wheels arranged within the spaces re spectively between said abutments and fixed upon said shaft, steam pipes connected with said steam chests respectively at the lower end thereof, a source of supply, valve for connecting one of said steam pipes with said source of supply and the other of said pipes with the atmosphere and vice versa whereby the steam may be directed through the abutments and turbine wheels successively in either direction to rotate said shaft, a cylinder within said casing sur rounding said abutments and wheels and connected to said abutments to hold the latter stationary, fasteners connecting said abutments and cylinder, a shell surrounding said cylinder between the latter and said casing and covering said fasteners, and shoulders formed on the inner walls of said castings adjacent to the inner ends of the latter and acting to hold said shell and cyla two-way inder in proper position within said casing,
