GUN -CARRIAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 1920.,
Original application filed July 27, 1917, Serial No. 183,199. Divided and this application filed July 19,
- 1919. Serial No. 312,085.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'EM1LE RIMAILHO, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing in Paris, France, 12 Rue de la Rochefoucauld, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Gun- Carriages, of which the following is a complete specification.
. This invention relates to a divisional application of my Patent #l,332,067 for gun carriage and the invention has special reference to a gun-carriage forming a complete artillery unit so constructed as to permit of travel over all sorts of ground, owing to its large bearing surface on the soil, both when traveling and when firing. This plant is particularly valuable on light or wet soils, where the more support of the usual gun-carriage trails becomes absolutely inslli'licient. This gun-carriage possesses the advantage of being capable of displacement and of pivoting by mechanical and electrical control, which permits of any displacement and change of aim necessitated by a change of objective. This gun-carriage consists essentially of a chassis, having supports for the trunnions of the cradle of the gun and provided with rollers which roll over the chains actuated by driving wheels moved by an electric motor located on the gun-carriage itself and fed by electric current furnished by a dynamo driven by a motor also located on the carriage.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates by way of example one constructional form of the invention:
Figure l is a side view of a gun-carriage forming the subject-matter of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan, the gun being brought into a horizontal position.
The gun-carriage is formed by two guncarriage cheek boa ms '1 connected to one another in front and at the back by cross bars. lhese beams are provided with a lateral frame 1 provided at its lower part with rollers 2i rolling on chains i of the type actuated. by imlependent driving wheels 5 at the back. Independent 'chain wheels 6' are arranged at the front and serve to hold the chains taut.
The motor system represented as actuating the driving wheels 5 consists of two electric motors 7 each connected with the driving wheels 5 by speed-reducing trains of gear wheels 8 9 the latter meshing with an endless screw 10 directly controlled by the electric motor 7.
The electric current necessary for the electricv motors 7 is supplied by a generating set mounted on the front end of the carriage itself, and comprising a dynamo 32, driven. by any motor 30.
In the form of construction shown by the drawing, the motor is a hydrocarbon one, but it must be understood that I do not wish to limit the scope of this invention to that motor, and that this motor may be of any type, steam, compressed air or other motor.
The current supplying cables are divided into two groups 12 and 13, one for the righthand motor and the other for the left-hand motor. They are inclosed in flexible tubes so as to be protected against any deterioration.
In order to effect a change of objective the gun-carriage itself is actuated in such a way as to make it pivot about the rear of one of its chains in order to putit into the new direction.
\"hat I claim is:
A gun-carriage, comprising a chassis having a longitinlinal central opening forming the recoil space for a gun, front and rear chain wheels carried by the chassis, a chain on each side of the chassis from therear wheel to the front wheel, rollers carried by the chassis and bearing on the chains, electricmotors mounted on the rear of the chassis, gearing between each motor and a rear chain wheel, and a motor on the front oi the chassis and controlling the said electric motors.
ln testimonywhereof l have hereunto set my hand at Paris (France), this 30th day of June, 1919.
EM I LE RIMA I Ll l0. In presence two witnesses:
