Description

! DEMOUN'IABLE RIM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1920.
Application filed August 1919. Serial No. 318,497.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENEDE'ITO TAMBU- RELLO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Demountable Rims, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in demountable rims, one of the objects being to provide an interchangeable rim, that is to say, a rim arranged to receive a straight side-tire or a clencher-tire. To accomplish this result, I provide a rim having detachable and reversible flanges to engage the headings of tires. When in one position relative to each other the flanges will be adapted to engage straight side-tires, and when in the other position they will be adapted to engage clencher tires.
Other features of improvement will hereinafter appear. I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will point out in the ap pended claim, reference being had to the drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improvement arranged for clencher tires;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device arranged for a straight side tire; and
Fig. 3 is a side view of a wheel equipped with my improvedrim.
As herein arranged, my improved rim consists of a plurality of annular bandmembers 5 and 6 and a plurality of shiftable detachable curved flange members 7 and 8 together with fastening elements or screws 9. In practice the band members will be slipped on to a felly 10 of a wheel, and the removable band 6 will be slipped over the band 5 and will rest upon projections 11 to maintain the band 6 clear of the band 5 to prevent rusting. The inner band 5 carries a concentric annular shelf portion 12 raised sufliciently from the band 5 to be flush with the band 6, that it to say, the top surfaces of said shelf and band will be flush. The shelf 12 and band 6 each carry a flange 13 and respectively, to serve as a backing for the tire engaging flanges 7 and 8. When in use one tire-flange will rest upon the shelf 12 and the other upon band 6. lYhen the tire is pumped up the flanges or rings and 8 W111 be forced against the adj)acent flanges of their respective band memers.
As the flanges 7 and 8 are removable from the band-members 5 and 6, they may be reversed. In other words, they can be placed upon the band members with the convex portions outwardly or inwardly. When the flanges 7 and 8 are placed upon the bands w th the convex portions outwardly thev Wlll be adapted to engage straight side tires. When placed upon the bands, with the convex portions inwardly, the flanges will be adapted to engage clencher tires. The rim as a whole may be secured to the wheel by the usual Wedges 10 and bolts 10*. The rim can be removed from a wheel after the wedges 1O have been removed, this fastening means being well known. It will be evident from the foregoing that my improved device is well adapted for use in connection with straight side or clencher tires, by merely reversing the position of the tire engaging flanges. After the rim, as a whole, has been removed from a wheel the band members can be taken apart, after the screws 9 have been removed. The outer tire engaging flange will of course slip off when band 5 is removed.
Having described my invention what I claim is: I
1. A tire supporting assembly consisting of a band to engage a wheel, a raised annular shelf carried by the said band concentric therewith, upstanding projections carried by said band a second band removably supported by the first named band and resting upon said projections, said second band being flush with said raised shelf, a tire engaging flange removably supported by said shelf, a second tire engaging flange carried by the removable band, and an upstanding flange carried by each band-member to engage the adjacent tire engaging flange.
2. A v tire supporting assembly consisting of a band to engage a wheel, a raised annular shelf carried by the said band concentric therewith, upstanding projections carried by said band, a second band removably supported by the first named band, and resting upon said projection, said second hand being flush with said raised shelf, a tire engaging flange removably supported by said shelf, a second tire engaging flange carried by the removable band, an upstanding flange carried by each band member to engage the adjacent tire engaging flange, and screws to secure one band to the other, said screws passing through some of said projections. 10 Signed at New York city, N. Y., this 15 day of August, 1919.
