WRITING ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE STEERING-WHEELS.

Application filed March 27, 1920. Serial No. 369,892.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. Fox a citizen of the United States, residing at 1 1amar, in the county of Prowers and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Writing Attachments for Automobile Steering-Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive attachment, susceptible of ready application to an automobile steering wheel without involving change in the construction thereof and embodying means for holding and supporting a pad of paper for memorandum purposes, and also embodying means for carrying a pencil as well as means for lessening the transmission of vibration to the pad of paper so that entries may be made on the pad while the automobile is in motion or while the engine thereof is running.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The steering wheel 1 is of the ordinary or of any other appropriate construction, and is not of my invention.
Among other elements my novel attachment comprises a body plate 2. The said body plate is preferably of sheet-metal, and its end portions are curled inwardly as illustrated to form a pencil holder 3, and a spring 4. In the said spring 4, formed by the curled end portion of the body plate, is arranged a clamping plate 5, the function of which is to clasp a pad of paper, indicated by 6, against the body plate 2 and in such manner that memorandums may be conveniently made upon the top sheet of the pad. The clamping plate 5 is of course subject to the action of the spring t, and is yieldingly held by said spring against the pad 6. n the plate 5 is a tongue 7 that extends through an aperture 8 in the spring f and afi'ords a convenient means for moving the working edge portion of the plate 5 away from the body plate 2 so as to permit of the ready interposition of a fresh pad of paper between the plate 5 and the body plate 2 whenever the same is necessary. At its outer side the spring 4 is provided with a stop 9 to limit the movement of the tongue 7 in the opening of the clamping means.
Carried by and extending beyond one end of the body plate 2 are clips 10 through the medium of which the attachment is removably aflixed on the circular hand portion of the wheel 1. Adjacent to its opposite end and at its back, the body plate 2 is provided with hooks 11 that are preferably struck therefrom. These hooks serve for the connection of a rubber band 12 that is disposed under tension between them and is adapted to constitute an inexpensive cush- 1011. The said cushion is adapted to bear on one of the spokes of the wheel 1, and its function is to absorb vibrations and prevent the transmission of the same to the plate 2 and the pad thereon.
My novel attachment will be found particularly useful for physicians and others who are called upon to make frequent calls in an automobile, and manifestly after making a call, a physician or other person on reentering the automobile is enabled to check off entries on the pad and to make such notes on the pad as are necessary as a matter of routine.
I prefer to detachably fasten the attachment on the steering wheel, but I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to this feature, inasmuch as it is within the purview of my invention to permanently connect the outer end of the body plate 2 to the circular hand portion of the Wheel 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A Writing attachment for automobile steering wheels comprising a pad body having an integral resilient curl at one end and clamping means in said curl and subject to the resilient action thereof, clip means at one end of the body plate and adapted to receive and engage the handle portion of a steering wheel, and a rubber band stretched between separated holding means at the under side of the body plate adjacent to the opposite end thereof and adapted to bearon a spoke of a steering wheel to prevent the transmission of vibration to the body plate.
