COALING DEVICE.
Application'filed September 22, 1919.
Y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWART H. BU-
' CHANAN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding-at Beaumont, inthe county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coaling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coal colliers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for conveying the coal from the collier to the ship. I
Among other features, the invention includes one or more containers for the coal each provided with a gravity feed, means for breaking the coal into small pieces, conveyer means for lifting the coal to an ele- 'vated point, and adjustable spouts for clirecting the coal into the ships bunkers. The inventlon also includes a turret 1n the collier for supporting the various parts including the container. of each unit, with means for revolving the turret to bring the parts into proper position relative to the ship or ships to be coaled.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. 7
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of a collier made in accordance with my invention. 1
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the deck of the collier.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View of a portion of the ship and one of the turrets.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view through the delivery chute. I
In these views 1 indicates the hull of the collier which is provided withthe superstructures 2 of the cabins, the forward bridge 3 and the smoke stacks 4, which are located aft. 5 indicates the superstructures of the coaling devices which are located amid-ship on each side of the central cabin.
Each coalingd'evice comprises a turret 6 located in the hull of the ship and rotatably mounted on the ball bearings The top of the turret is of circular formation and Specification of Letters Patent.

forms part of the deck as shown at Sin Figs. 2 and, 3. This circular top 8 supports the uprights 9 of the superstructures 5. The turret carries the coal container 10 the upper end of. which projects slightly above the circular top 8 and is closed by the hatches 11. These hatches are opened and closed by the motors 12. The lower end of the container is formed with the delivery spouts 13 for delivering the coal to the crushers 14, one of which is located at the end of each spout. These crushers are operated by the motors 15. The coal passing through the Crushers is carried by the chutes 16 into the housings 17 of the conveyers 18. These conveyer housings are provided with horizontal portions which lie within the lower part of the turret. The housings extend upwardly through the circular top of the turret and have their upper ends supported by the superstructures 5. The conveyers are actuated by the motors 19 located in the lower part of the turret below the conveyer. A switch 20 is arranged within the lower part of this turret for controlling the circuits of the motors.
The upper ends of the conveyer is charged into the chutes 21 carried by the superstructures 5. The lower end of these chutes are connected by the flexible joints 22 with the telescopic member 23 of the chute.
The turret is rotated by means of a motor 25 which has its shaft provided with a gear 26 meshing with a circular rack 27 on the turret.
hen a ship is to be coaled the collier is run alongside the ship and the turret turned to place the superstructure across the collier. The telescopic part of the chute is then placed into the hull of the ship and then the motors are started to operate the crushers and the conveyers. Thus the coal will be carried from the container through the crusher and elevated by the conveyers to the chute and from the chute into the hold of the shi IIE two ships are to be coaled the collier is run between them and one chute placed in the hull of one ship and the other chute placed in the hold of the other. In this way two vessels may be coaled at the same time.
I have shown the collier as supplied with may be supplied with any number of turrets and each of said turrets may also be supplied with 1, 2 or more delivery ehutes'and conveyers. V
It Will be seen that the entire Weight of the containers and the coal therein is carried by the turrets and as the turrets are located Within the hull the weight of the parts is located below the Water-line. The base of the turrets are constructed like those-of gun turrets and these parts are not shown in detail. I
By my invention theuse of cranes, buckets, hoists, booms, hoisting engines and the like are rendered unnecessary and much time and trouble is saved in coaling ships.
By inclosing all the parts the escape of dust from the coal is reduced to a minimum so that the collier may easily be kept clean.
It is thought from the foregoing description'that the advantages and novel features combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the-appended claims.
'VVhat I claim is 1. A coal collier comprising a-rotatable turret, a coal bunker carried thereby and means carried by the turret for conveying .the coal- ,from the bunker to the ship to be coaled.
2. A coal collier. comprising a rotatable turret, a coal bunker i therein, elevating means earned by the turret for hftlng the coal from the. bunker to a point above the ships deck, a chute for receiving the coal 7 from the elevating means and means for ac-' tuating the turret and elevator means.
3. Ashlp of the class described comprising a rotatable turret located Within the hull of a ship, a coal container carried by the turret, means for elevating the coal from the container to a point above the deck of the I ship, a superstructure supported by the top of the turret and supporting the upper end of the elevating means and a delivery chute carried by the superstructure and receiving the coal from-the elevating means.
