X T v STAKE-POCKET.
- Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented une 22 1 920.
Application filed April 8, 1919. Serial No. 288,631.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, JnnnMIAHIIAYEs a citizen of the United States, residing at verett, in the county ofSnohomish and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stake-Pockets, of
which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to stake-pockets designed primarily for use on railway cars, and it comprises certain new and useful improvements therein. The principal object is to provide a metal pocket integrally secured to an all-metal frame that straddles a car sill and is adapted to be aflixed thereto without impairing the strength of the sill.
Another object is to provide a stakepocket whose position on the car s1ll may be readily changed as conditions necessitate or require; or may be transferred from one sill to another sill without injury to the sill or to the stake-pocket.
The invention consists of the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims terminating this specification, as will enable others skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to, make and use the same. Referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the stake-pocket,
and the frame to which it is integrally sej cured.
Fig. 2 is a view of the plate as abearing for the sill between the walls C, C, of frame B when they are secured in position on the car silliby bolts F. T
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stakepocket as affixed to a car sill. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the stake-pocket as affixed to a car sill on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3. y a
Like parts in the several viewsare. identified by the same reference letters.
The stake-pocket A, and frame B supporting the same, are preferably made of one casting; the frame is of substantially inverted-U section having two vertical, parallel walls C, C, spaced apart'and adapted'to straddle a sill D. The walls extend below the lower edge of the sill to permit being bolted together so as to secure the frame to the sill without puncturing the sill. At or near its lower edge each wall is provided with two apertures in the same plane and E that serves registering withla like number of apertures inthe opposite wall and adapted to receive bolts to secure the frame in its proper position on the sill.
. The plate E is placed between the bolts F and the bottom of the sill before'the frame B is fixedly secured; and its purpose is to serve as a bearing for the sill to prevent inury thereto which might occur'if the bolts came in contact with it.
When a stake-pocket is integrally attachedto an all-metal frame that is adapted to straddle a sill, instead of being aflixed with bolts or similar means, the danger of splitting the sill which is of common occurrence, is avoided. Inthe present construction the sill is not punctured in any manner in attaching my improved stake-pocket,
. for it is aflixed to the sill by means of two parallel, vertical rectilineal walls so that the strain upon the sill is distributed considerably, thereby removingthe danger of splitting.
VVhenever-it is desired to change the position on the sill of the stake-pocket it may be released by loosening bolts F which will enable the frame holding the stake-pocket to be moved along on the sill; or by removmg the bolts from the walls C, C,-the frame B may be raised from the sill and transferred to another sill and aflixed thereto in the manner hereinbefore described.
The device as shown and described herein is my preferred form of construction for carrying out my invention where the traflic is heavy; but where the traffic is light the all-metal frame may be secured to the car sill by bolts passing through the walls C, C, i and the sill if preferred. The construction herein disclosed is susceptible of modification and variation without departing from the spirit of the invention and, therefore, I
. do not limitmyself to the precise details as herein set forth.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A car stake-pocket comprising an allmetal frame adapted to straddle a car sill to support a metal stake-pocket integral therewith and means extending under the sill for securing the same to the sill without puncturing the sill.
2. A car stake-pocket comprising an allmetal frame adapted to straddle a car sill to support a. metal stake-pocket integral therewith, and means extending under the sill for removably securing same to acar sill Without injury to the latter.
3. A vertical car stake-pocket comprising an all-metal frame adapted to straddle a car sill and to support a metal stake-pocket integral therewith, and means extending under the sill for securing same to a car sill Without injury thereto. 7
4:. A verticalmetal car stake-pocket integrally securecl to'an all-metal frame'ofsub all metal frame of substantially inverted-U shaped section having two parallel, vertical,
rectilineal Walls spaced apart to straddle a car sill, and means extending under the sill for securing the stake pocket to the sill Without puncturing the latter.
6. An all-metal vertical rectangular car stake-pocket With open top and bottom integrally secured to an al1-meta1 frame of substantially inverted-U shaped section having two parallel, vertical, rectilineal walls spaced apart and adapted to straddle the sill, and means extendingunder the sill for securing the stake pocket to thesill without puncturing the latter. i 7; A metal car stakepockct integrally attached to an all-metal framethat is adapted to straddle "a sill andwhose position thereon may be changed at Will Without injuring the sill, v
