IMPROVEMENT IN POST-DRIVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. BSLLEBQ, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES H. WILLIAM- SON and JOHN H. ALLYN, of Whitestown, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Post- Driving Machines, of which the following is a specification: v
Our invention relates to a rod and a weight with a hole in the center for the purpose Of sliding said weight up and down on said rod, said rod being used to guide the weight in a perpendicular line without adjusting the frame of the machine. Said rod has a hole or cavity in the lower end to receive a spindle; the object of said spindle being to keep a post in a perpendicular position while being driven, also to keep the lower end of said rod ou the top of a post while Operatin g the driver.
Figure l is a perspective view of a machine embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the same.
A is the frame oi' the machine. B is the rod, which may be solid with a hole or cavity in its lower end, or it may be hollow. C is the weight, with a hole in the center for the rOd B to pass through. D is the eye, attached to the top Oi the frame A for holding the upper end of the rod B in position. spindle, the lower end of which is pointed for driving into the top of a post. The upper end is intended to pass up into the lower end of the rod B, and by this means a post may be held in an upright position, and the lower end of the rod B heldpon the top of the post while the weight G is being operated. F is the rope used forr elevating the weight C by means oi' the spool G and the lever H attached to the shaft I. The spool G is hung loose on the shaft I and controlled by the action of the clutch J.
The Object is to provide an effective method for driving fence or other posts without being obliged to adjust the machine to cause the weight (l to move in a perpendicular line.
We claim as our invention- The rod and spindle, for the purpose here inbefore set forth.
