My invention relates to a means for automatic operation of devices upon cars through the relative movement-occurring between the body and truck whenthe car strikes'a curve. A valve casing 2 supported from the car body by a foot 20 is inserted in a pipe line with air under pressure. .At one side of the air under pressure and the pipe 10 at the other side connects with the mechanism which it may be desired to operate by this compressed air. -The valve 3 is illustrated as held upon its the air pressure and by the spring 30. Carried upon the truck are two tappet bars seat, or closed, both byi valve the pipe 1 contains pin- 61 which extends bearated sufliciently to provide 81, these being placed at opposite'sides of the end of the controlling bar 4 in position to engage and swing said controlling bar when the truck swingswith reference-tothe car body. Tnthis way the applicationof the air is controlled by the swinging of the truck.
In the preferred constructionthe two tappet bars are placed in angular relation to the direction of movement of the part of the truck to which they areysecured. "Theadjacent ends ofthe tappet'bars are also sepan opening of ample size for the passage ofthe controlling bar. Because of the angular position of the tappet bars, when they engage the controlling bar 4: they cause it to swing in such manner that it passes along the'inner edge of the tappet bar until itp'assesofi ofthe'end 83. It then swings'ba'ck to aposition, roughly indicated at 41 whereitwill engage the other side of the tappet bar when this swings back to its normalposition. a As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the tw'otappet bars 81 are integral parts otthe same'casting, this having a base which is secured in place on thetruck by a bolt 82. Inthe form shown in Figs. 4- and 5, the two tappet barsSl are made separate from'and ad ustable with relation to the base 9, so'that the separation of the two tappet bars and their angular position, maybe adjusted. Thislis shown as follows:
The base 9 is a bar having a slot9O in each end. The tappetbars have each a lower side or base 84,.provided with aslot 86 and are secured to the base bar 9 by bolts which passthrough the slots of each. By this means the tappet bars are made adjustabie, both as to their separation from-each other and as to their angular position.
The valve shown and described is to he considered as typical of a means through the action of which the operation of any mechanism is initiated and controlled. 1 The term valve as used in the claimsisto" be interpreted as meaning any controlling means which functions in such manner.
It is immaterial whether the fluid-controlled be a liquid or a gas, or whether itbe an electric current. The term valve is to be construed as including any means by which the supply of such a source ot 'energy is controlled. i
