REPAIR-TOOL FOR TIRES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IIARRY R. Hms'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Repair-Tools for Tires, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a repair tool for tires, particularly for repairing punctured pneumatic tires, by inserting in the aperture of the tire a number of elastic bands to form a plug which will seal the puncture.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool which is simple in construction and operation and which can be manufactured at a very low cost; a further object of my invention is to construct a tool having a self locking pivoted member which will hold the elastic bands stretched and in a position ready for use without the necessity of holding the pivoted member, by hand, from rotating or by providing a locking device or releasing trigger, to prevent it from rotating, which result is accomplished by so arranging the parts that the stretched bands will hold the pivoted member against a stop, by exerting a strain in a line back of the pivot point of the pivoted member.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide the needle with side members between which the pivoted member is guided and by forming the side members with rounded corners which will allow the elastic bands to freely pass over the pivot point of the pivoted member, both at the time the bands are being looped over the pivoted member and at the time the latter is rotated to discharge the bands.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved tool for repairing tires; Fig. 2, is an edge view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the elastic bands in place upon the tool; and Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the tool inserted in a tire and the pivoted member slightly turned and about to free itself of the elastic bands. 7
In the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1 represents the needle, provided with an open slot 2, at its free end, to receive one portion of the elastic bands. projection forming a stop 10 which takes against the needle 1 and limits the movement of the member 8 in one direction. The said member 8 is also provided with a notch 12 adapted to receive the elastic bands 14.
The bands 14 are looped over the member 8, passed through the slot 2, formed in the free end of the needle, and a ain looped over the member 8, as shown in Fig.- 3.
The pivoted member 8 has the notch 12 so positioned therein that the elastic bands 14 will hold the stop 10 against the needle 1 and thus hold the member 8 in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The notch 12, formed in the member 8, is located out of alinement with the slotted end of the needle and the pivot-shaft 6, so that the pressure of the elastic bands will hold the pivoted member 8 in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The pivoted member 8 forms a substantial handle for forcing the needle, with the clastie bands thereon, into the punctured tire 15.
By pressing the finger against-one side of the member 8, the latter may be turned upon the pivot-shaft 6, as shown in Fig. 4, and the contraction of the elastic bands will then turn the member 8 into the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 4 and the bandswill free themselves from the member 8. The shoulders 7 between the side members 4 and 5 and the pivot-shaft 6 are rounded so that the elastic bands will freely pass over them, thus permitting the bands 14 to assume a straight line between the notch 12 formed in the pivoted member 8 and the free end of the needle, as shown in Fig. 3. The said rounded shoulders 7 allow the bands 14 to readily slide over the pivot point of the member 8.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. A needle having band engaging means in one end thereof, a member pivoted in the opposite end of the needle and having a stop formed thereon adapted to engage the needle, said pivoted member having a notch formed therein to receive said band and extend the latter in a line passing the pivot point of the pivoted member on the same side of the needle that the stop engages the needle.
2. A needle having an elastic band receiving opening therein, a member pivoted to the needle, a stop formed upon said member adapted to engage the needle and prevent the turning of the said member in one direction, said pivoted member having means thereon for receiving said elastic band adapted to extend between the end of the HARRY R.
