Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15,1920.
Application filed November 1, 1919. Serial No, 335,050.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY HERBER'r Ron,
a resident of Pretoria, Union of outh Africa, have invented a new andImproved Lock for Meters, &c., of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks for a numa citizen of the Union of South Africag and for meters (water and gas), pressure gages, time recorders, handcuffs, motor car hoods, bicycles, and the like, and has for an object to provide an improved construction in which the parts are few in number and easily operated.
' Another object of the invention is'to provide a construction oflock, a single key operated member, and a single hand operated member. f
A further object is to provide a lock with a manually actuated bolt held normally in a locked position and a key operated screw.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a water meter with a lock embodiment shown applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1, but showing the lock in an unlocked position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the lock removed.
Fig. 4: is a section through Fig. 3 on line 4-4:.
Fig. 5 is a top plan viewof a locking lugembodying certain features of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a water meter which is provided with a lid 2 hinged at 3. In order to hold the lid 2 closed and locked a lock 4. embodying the invention is connected to the meter 1 at a point substantially diametrically opposite the hinge 3. The
lock 4 is constructed of three pieces, namely the bolt 5, the screw 6, and the locking lug 7. The lug 7 is formed with a threaded aperture'8 and with an offset or shoulder 9. The side of lug 7 carrying the shoulder 9 is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured to the meter 1, or if desired it could be made integral therewith. The bolt 5 is provided with an overlapping ear 10 positioned to extend over and bear against the top of lid 2 for locking the lid closed. The bolt- 5 is also formed with a large bore 11 merging into a small bore 12 a proximately the size of the aperture 8. he large 'bore 11 is odeslgned to accommodate the triangular shaped head 13 of screw 6 which screw has a threaded section 14.- screwed into aperture8. ber of s ecial ur oses as for instance locks In operation when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to unlock the lid 2 a suitable spanner key is inserted into the bore 11 and screw 6 is turned until the lower portion of the fiat side 15 has been raised above the shoulder 9 after which the bolt is manually turned to one side as shown in Fig. 2. A reverse operation will, of course, bring the parts to a locked position.
What I claim is: r I
1. A look for meters and the like comprising a lug rigidly secured to said meter,
said lug having an upstanding shoulder and a threaded aperture, a locking bolt havlng a fiat portion adapted to interlock with said shoulder, and a locking screw extending through said bolt and into said threaded aperture for normally holding the bolt interlocked with said shoulder and thereby in a fully locked position.
2. A look for meters and the like comprising a lug secured to the meter, said lug being formed with a shoulder and a I threaded aperture, a bolt having an, ear, a
portion adapted to interlock with said shoulder, and a large bore merging into a'small bore, and a clam ing screw formed with a polygonal shape head arranged in said large bore and threaded portion extending through said small bore into said threaded aperture for clamping the bolt against said lug so as to cause the interlocking portion of the bolt to interlock with said shoulder and be locked against turning thereby.
3. In a lock for meters and the like the combination with a meter having a hinge and lid adapted to fit fiatwise against the meter casing, of a lug rigidly securedto said meter casing formed with an upstanding shoulder and a threaded bore, said bore being parallel with the face of the shoulder, and a bolt formed with a fiat portion adapted to fit against the face of said sh0ul-' having a tool engaging head, said head being arranged in said large bore With the thread ed end 'of the screw extending through the small bore into'thethreaded bore of said lug.
