To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. BUDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jumpers or Cribs, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention comprises a jumper or crib. It is contemplated to provide a device of this character which will embody a standard or support from which a basket or crib may be suspended, preferably by springs, so as to move freely in a vertical direction and be capable of horizontal swinging if desired; wherein the standards and cross piece from which the crib or basket is swung will be arranged on a base by a new and compact arrangement which will produce a strong steady connection between these members forming a steady integral support for the crib which will not become loose or wabbly; wherein provision is made for hanging of clothes or the like and utilizing the device as a clothes rack; wherein the tension of the springs supporting the crib will be regulated so that the crib is suspended in proximity to the floor, having free movement vertically when carrying a predetermined weight, but which will allow the ends of the crib to touch the floor when this weight is shifted to the ends of the crib; and which will, in a word, provide a neat, serviceable and practical device of this character free from many of the defects in devices heretofore used for this purpose.

Other objects and advantages will in part be apparent, and in part be brought out more fully in the description which follows.

Figs. 4;, 5, and 6, are detail views in section showing the connective arrangements of the parts forming the base, and taken on lines L-4E, 5-5, and 66, respectively.

In these views, 1 represents spaced-apart lateral members connected by a cross-piece 2 to constitute an H-shaped base. The lateral members are notched centrally to snugly receive and embrace the ends of the cross piece 2, and the latter is provided at each end with an opening or mortise into which there is snugly driven a reduced end 8 of an upright 4-. The reduced end, as best seen in Fig. 5, is carried upwardly for a distance from the base to form shoulders. Under these, and

Means are provided for securely connecting these members together and as here shown the ends of the cross member 2 are secured to the cross-braces 5 as by bolts 6, whilethe braces 5 are in turn connected to the lateral members 1 as by screws 7. A. cross bolt 8 is also used to secure the reduced portion of the upright 4: to the brace 5, the whole forming a compact and securely connected structure.

In addition to the brace 5, there is a side brace 9, having a cut-away portion 10 for the reception of the bolt 8 and secured to the base and upright as by screws 11. Upon the braces5, there are upwardly extending additional bracing members 12, provided with cut-away portions 13 for the recep-v tion of the bolts 6, and secured to the uprights as by screws 14:. The arrangement is such that each upright is surrounded by a pyramid-shaped bracing structure, both the uprights and braces being connected together securely to form a solid compact structure to withstand wabbling and loosening.

At their upper extremities the uprights are mortised and fitted therein is a cross piece 15. This latter is suitably secured to.

the uprights and carries at its ends hooks 16 for the reception of clothes and the like. Similar hooks 17 may be provided on the uprights, and both cross piece and uprights are braced by members 18 connected thereto.

On the underneath portion of the crosspiece there are hooks 19 from which depend springs 20, the latter being connected to hooks 21 in a cross-piece or handle 22 forming a portion of a crib or basket 28. The crib is provided with a mattress and is detachable to be carried on the arm if desired.

In practice, the springs are of a length and resiliency suflicient to support a fairly large sized baby for instance a sufficient distance from the floor to permit free movement of the crib vertically and a swinging movement horizontally, particularly when in a reclining position. By having the basket nean the floor it has been found that if the child becomes active enough to climb out of it he is generally heavy enough to bear the end portion of the crib down into engagement with the floor, and this permits him to get out of the crib without falling.

From the, foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a neat, practical and compact device which meets the objects set forth. While it has been illustrated in the embodiment here shown, it will be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form of this disclosure, as many changes in the general arrangement may be made within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.

What I claim is 2- 1. In a device of the character described, a base comprising lateral members; a cross piece secured thereto; said cross piece being provided with openings in its ends and snugly set in notched portions of the lateral members; a bracing member arranged on each lateral member and provided with an opening registering with the opening in the ends of the cross-piece; anupright having a portion snugly fitting into the openings in the bracing member and the cross piece; means for additionally bracing these members; and means for securing the components together.

2. In a device of the character described a base comprising lateral members provided with notches; a cross-piece fitting in the notches in the laterals and provided with openings in the extremities thereof; a bracing member extending along each lateral member and provided with an opening registering with the opening in each end of the cross-piece; an upright having a reduced portion forming shoulders disposed within the openings in the bracing member and the cross piece, the shoulders bearing on the upper surface of the bracing member; additional bracing means associated with each upright and base; a cross bar connecting the upper extremities of the uprights and provided with a hook; and. a crib suspended from the I cross bar.
