provide a muck shoe wherein, when desired,
The invention has as a further object to calks may be readily attached preventing slipping. V
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a device of the above described character which may be looked upon the shoe of a horse and wherein the locking device employed will be resiliently held in locked position so that possibility of accidental loss of the shoe will be reduced to a minimum.
Other and incidental objects will appear thereto for hereinafter. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing.
my improved muck shoe attached to a conventional type of horseshoe, V
Fig. 2" is a longitudinal sectional view taken centrally through the device, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view particularly illustrating the locking lever em ployed for securing the muck shoe upon the horseshoe, parts being broken away and shown in section.
In carrying the invention into effect, I employ a preferably fiat body or plate 10 which, at its forward endportion is deflected upwardly and is preferably provided Also, the rear corners of the plate are preferably cut off so that sharp angles will be eliminated. Upstanding from the plate adjacent itsforward end is a mediallyarranged arcuate toe plate 12. This plate is provided at its lower edge with a plurality of laterally directed lugs 13 and engaging through, these lugs are rivets or other suitable fastening devices securing the toe plate to the body plate. As
best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the toe plate is inclinedwrearwardly and upwardly from the body plate. Mounted upon the body plate adjacent one rear corner thereof is a heel plate 14 riveted or otherwise secured to the body plate and having upwardly bent portions providing a socket :15.
Mounted to swing upon the body plate at a point opposite the heelplate 14 and adjacent the other rear corner of the body plate is a locking lever 16.. Atits rear end portion this lever is thickened to form a head 17 and engaging through the head is a bolt or other suitable fastening device 18'pivot- I Patented June 15,1920.
ally connecting the lever with tl e' body plate. At its forward end, the head iscut away at its inner side to provide a socket 19,
a forwardly extending flange 20 overhang. ing said socket. As particularly illustrate in ig. 3, the lever 16 is curved longitudinally, and formed on the lever at its forward end is a depending lug 21 merging at its inner end into an upstanding thumb piece 22 curving laterally outward with respect to the lever. The lever is preferably formed of suitable resilient material and, as shown in Fig. 1, the lug 21 is resiliently held by the shank of the lever to engage through an opening 23 in the body plate for locking the lever closed in active position.
In order that a clear understanding may be had of the manner in which my improved muck shoe is applied, I have, in the drawings, shown the device in connectionwith a conventional type of horseshoe 241. will be observed, the toe plate 12 is curved to snugly receive the toe portion of the horseshoe and will extend upwardly at the front of the horses hoof to coact therewith while the socket 15 of the heel plate 14 will snugly receive one end of the shoe. The opposite end of the shoe will be snugly received within the socket 19 of the lever 16,
the flange 20 engaging over the shoe at its adjacent end and the lever conforming to the curvature of the shoe at its outer edge to abut thereagainst. The device willthus be securely held upon the shoe of the horse.
In applying the device, the lever 16 is first swung outwardly when the toe plate 12 is engaged at the front of a hoof'of the horse.
The device isthen moved to engage the ad jacent end of the horseshoe in the socket'lo end whenthe lug 21 of the lever'will snap into the opening 28 for securingthe' lever p closed and locking the -dev'ice" upon the horseshoe. It will accordingly be seen that Y the device maybe easily applied and since a locking means is provided for the lever 16,
possibility of accidental displacement of the device will be reduced to a minimum. The spacing of the toe plate, heel plate and looking lever may, of course, be varied for dif-' --therefor which may be used when desired for preventing slipping; These calks may, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2, each be formed from a piece of sheet metal bent upon itself and having its overlapping portions flattened against each other, the calks being of alengthto extend throughout the major portion of the width of the body plate. Formedlon the calks at their upper edges are spaced pairs of oppositely directed lateral'fianges 26, and removablyengaging through these flanges are bolts or other suit- .able fastening devices 27 detachably connecting the calks to the body plate; Thus, the calks may be readily secured in position and as easily removed. As will be noted, the front calk is preferably arranged in ad- ,vance of the plane of the toe plate'12 while i the rear calk is disposed slightly at the rear of the plane of'the heel plate 14 and rear end of the lever 16.
Having thus described the invention, what is vclaimed as new is:
1. A device of the character described including a shoe body, atoe plate upstanding therefrom to coact with the toe of a horseshoe, a heel plate carried by the shoe body to coact with one heel portion of a horseshoe, and a lever carried by the shoe body to coact with the other heel portion of a horseshoe forconnecting the shoe body thereto and movable to a position locking the device upon the horseshoe.
' 2. A device of the character described including a shoe'body, a toeplateupstanding therefrom to coact with the toe of a horseshoe, a heel plate carried by the shoe body to coact with one heel portion of a horseshoe, a lever carried by the shoe body to co act with the other heel portion of a horseshoe for connecting the shoe body thereto, and, means for locking the leverin active position. i i V 3, A device of the character described including a shoe body, a toe plate upstanding therefrom tocoaet with the toe of a horse-V,
necting the shoe bodythereto, the lever beprovided with meansto coact with the shoe body for locking the lever in active position.
