This invention relates to improvements vin car movers and is designed more especially as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in my Patei1t'1,315,905, dated Sept. 9, 1919.
One of the objects of the invention is toy provide a device of this character in which the stem of the gripping head is ca used to move forwardly and upwardly during the operation of the device, thus to cause said head to travel' upwardly Land forwardly with the gripped portion of the wheel and prevent tilting of the mover. 1
Another object is to provide means whereby the gripping jaws are automatically released from the v car wheel during their downward movement, thereby to allow the head'to be reciprocated and impart successive rotations to the wheel.
A still further object is to provide a novel changeable fulcruin for the operating lever.
With the foregoing and other objectsl in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of Vthe invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the ligures by characters of reference, l designates a hollow pedestal which may, if desired, be provided withone side 2 formed of a separate piece, although the entire pedestal can be formed in one piece.V This pedestal is'nounted on a base 3 swiveled thereon as at l and anti-friction bearings 5 are interposed between the base and pedestal. The base is adapted to rest on a fail R and has depending corner lugs 6 flor engaging the sides of the head of the rai The'pedestal has an arcuate portion 7 eX- teiiding forwardly therefrom and provided with an elongated opening or slot 8 from opposite walls of which project opposed studs v9. Ribs `or projections 10 and 11 extend from the pedestal below the opening 8 and ai'e overhung by the housed arm 12 of an actuating lever 13 in which is formed a socket 14 for the reception of afhandle not shown. Spaced notches 15 are' formed in the arm 12 of the lever and are adapted ysuccessively to receive the respective projections 10 and 11 when the lever is swung relative to the pedestal, there being grooves 16 in the sides of the lever for the reception of the studs 9. Thus it will be seen that when the lever is inclined with its socket end raised, the
projection 11 rests in one recess 15 and constitutes the fulcrum of the Vlever andas the lever is pressed downwardly at its outer end the next recess 15 receives the projection 10 and finally the studs 9 are received within the grooves 16.
The arm 12 of the lever has an upwardly projecting ear 17 pivotally engaged by one end of a short curved plunger 18 which, in turn, is pivotally connected to the lower end of an arcuate stein 19 slidably mounted in a curved passage 20 in the upper portion of the pedestal 1. A head 21 is swiveled on the upper end of this stem, as at 22 and has its side portions curved to form arms 23 einbracing the car wheel W to which it is to be applied. End recesses 24 are formed in the arms and are provided with end closure plates 25 and seated in these recesses are the rounded inner ends of cam shaped gripping jaws 26 having tapered bosses 27 bearing in recesses 28 provided therefor. Rods 29 are secured to the jaws and are journaled in the respective arms and these rods have terminal arms 30 depending therefrom and overhanging a deflecting cap 31 on the top of the pedestal. Springs 32 are arranged to hold the upper ends of the jaws normally pressed inwardly and the lower ends of the armsV 30 normally in position over the cap 31.v
In using the device .the .base 3 is .placed on rail R close to the wheel W to be moved and the .jaws 26 are positioned at" opposite sides of the wheel. y As the head 2l approachesfits lowermost position the arms 30 arebrought against thel top of cap 31 so as to cause the jaws to swing apart ready to reengage the wheel W'. By thrusting down on the outer ,end of the ,lever 13 the inner arm of the lever will move the plunger 18 and the stem 19V upwardly along a curved line.A As soon as lthe head 21 begins to move upwardly the arms 30 will lift off of the cap 81, and the jaws 26 will grip the sides of theV wheel IV under the action of the springs 32.
Thus the wheel will be rotated, the curved stem 19 causing the head and jaws to follow the moving gripped portion of the wheel without displacing `the pedestal by btilting orv sliding it. By then reversing the movement of the lever the head 21 willvmove downwardly,the frictional engagement of the jaws with the sides of the wheel causing thejaws to swing outwardly and become dis'- engaged fromthe wheel until the jaws are brought to their lowermost positions whereupon the arms' 30 will engage the cap 31 and cause the jaws to open wide preparatory for the next engagement with-the sides of the wheel, .thereby restraining the action of thevsprings 32;v until ready for the next engagementwit-h the lsides of the wheel..
