Description

FFICE.
ALBERT J. ARNOLD, OF COLUMBUS, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,238, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. ARNOLD, of Columbus, in the county of Platte and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and valuable lmprovement in Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. V
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my invention Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same 5 and Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
This invention has relation to firegrates, in which the grate-bars extend upward to form a front grating; and it consists in providin g such a grate with a laterally-slidin g or reciprocating lower grate, having its bars perforated and extending upward in front, in contact and parallel with the bars of the upper grate, which is provided with lugs to support the lower grating, thereby forming a sectional curved fire-grate especially adapted for burning fine coal or coal-dust.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the upper section of my improved fire-grate. This section is of the ordinary form of fire-grates, but is provided with L-shaped lugs a depending from its inner and outer edges. B designates the under section, consisting of the side bars 12 and transverse bars I), the latter corresponding to the bars 2 cf the upper section, and parallel therewith. The section B rests on the lugs a, and, being shorter than the upper section, is capable of longitudinal adjustment, enabling the spaces between the bars of the upper section to be en tircly or partially closed by the bars I). The bars I) are perforated to let sufficient air pass through to promote combustion. A greater quantity of air may be admitted by leaving the spaces open, or partially so. The lower section serves to prevent the fine coal or other fine fuel from falling through the grate, and is also useful as a means for regulating the draft. The section B is provided with a stud, E, to be used in adjusting or shaking it. F designates pivot-arms, by means of which the grate may be hung so as to tilt. The ashes may be let down into the ash-pan by simply vibrating the lower grate.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sectional fire-grate, consisting of a bent grate, A, and a reciprocating grate, B, connected with the grate A by lugs, and having perforated bars parallel with and extendingupward in front of the bars of the grate A, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT J. ARNOLD.
