Description

R. SOMMERVILLE.
Bouts and Shoes.
No.- 134,225. Patented Dec.24,1872.
FLyJ.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SOMMERVILLE, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOQTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.134,225, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom itnay cozgce'rn Beit known that I, ROBERT SOMMERVILLE, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Uppers for Shoes and Boots, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the use of wiregauze cloth for the uppers of boots and shoes.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents shoes with the uppers made of wiregauze; and Fig. 2 is a section of a portion of the shoe, showing the mode of attaching the parts together.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
Ais the sole, which is made of leather in the usual manner. B is the heel, also of leather, and attached in the usual manner. O is Vthe upper, of wire-gauze, which is used in i copper wire, as, when made of these metals, it
is pliable and yields readily to the form of the last, and may be more readily fastened to the so e.
In this example of my invention I attach the metallic upper to the sole by means of a strip of thin metal fastened to the top of' thc sole by nails or screws, and then soldering the upper to that piece. d is this strip of metal, which extends all around the sole. eis one of the screws 'or nails, and the black line f repre sents the solder.
But I do not co'nne myself to any particular mode of fastening the metallic upper to the sole. It may be done by sewing or pegging, as in ordinary boots and shoes.
My invention consists in substituting a metallic fabric for leather.
The principal advantage of this shoe is, it gives the foot free ventilation, and is sufficiently pliable to allow free action to the foot.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A shoe or boot with the upper made of I'netallic wire-gauze B, substantially as shown and described.
ROBERT SOMMERVILLE.
