Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE. v
JOHN G. SGRIBNER, OF ASHLAND, NElV HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TURBINE WATER-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,1?11, dated December 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. SCRIBNER, of Ashland, of the county of Grafton, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbines or Tater-Wheels; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following The principal wheel A of the turbine consists of a cylinder, a, having t'wo wings, I) b, projecting from its periphery and against a cap-plate, 0, extended over the cylinder and making part of the wheel, all being as shown. The said wheel A is mounted on a vertical shaft, B, and arranged within a hollow drum or case, 0, which, at its periphery, opens into another such case, D, in which is arranged the secondary wheel E, which is a cylinder notched at its periphery, as shown at d d. The wheel E extends into the case 0, so that the circumferences of the two wheels may run in contact or close together. The secondary wheel is fixed on a vertical shaft, F, the two shafts B and F being connected by gears G and H. The gear G is fastened firmly to the shaft B, but the gear H revolves freely on its shaft and carries a pawl, e, which engages with a ratchet-wheel, f, fixed upon the shaft F, the said pawl being provided with aspring, g, for keeping it in engagement with the ratchet-wheel, as circumstances may require. The purpose of the pawl and ratchet is to admit the two wheels A and E to be adjusted so as to enable the floats or wings of the wheel A, while it may be in revolution, to enter and pass at proper times through the notches of the wheel E, each of the said notches being so formed as to make a close joint with one of the wings, while the notch and wing may be in conjunction. Through the flooring t of the main wheel-case and near to and on opposite sides of that part of the wheelE that projects into the said wheel-case, is an induct, K, and one or more educts, l, the induct leading from a spout or conduit, m, arranged beneath the floor. The
water, on entering the wheel-case, does so tangentially to the curve of the-wheel, and, after passing around nearly the entire case and driving or revolving the wheel, will escape directly or tangentially out of the case, thereby operating with little or no reflection, the secondary wheel serving not only as an abutment to enable the water to revolve the main wheel, but as a means of separating the educt from the induct or inducts, and to enable the main wheel to pass with close joints the secondary wheel.
Fig. 4 is a side view and Fig. 5 an under side view of the main wheel, each tooth or wing of which is shown as provided with a recess or notch, 0, extending from its baseupward, the purpose of such notch being to enable the wing or tooth to be made of sufficient strength, and take the pressure of the water from the induct while the bottom of the tooth or wing may be passing over that edge of the induct that is next the secondary wheel.
The two wheel-cases opening into one another, as shown, I term the duplex wheelcase.
By the peculiar arrangement of the inducts and educt or educts and the cap-plate of the main wheel and its case, as shown and described, together with the arrangement of such and the secondary wheel and case, the pressure of the water is not only brought to act without reflection, but to press the main wheel upward so as to relieve its step, p, and pivot r from friction while the wheel may be in revolution.
Furthermore,- there is a notch, 8, made in the said floor, and extended from the educt underneath the secondary wheel, such notch or recess being to enable the pressure of the water to act against the secondary wheel to raise it so as to prevent its pivot 20 from wearing the step c.
- I make no claim to a water-wheel constructed as described in the United States Patent No. 36,415, whether such wheel be with or withou the separating flange to its buckets.
. In the duplex turbine, as set forth, I claim as my invention or improvement as followsthat is to say:
1. The combination and arrangement of the ratchetwheel f, the pawl c, and pawlspring g, with the gears G H, the shafts B F,
3. Inthe double turbine, as set forth, the notch 8, arranged with the induct and the auxiliary wheel, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN G. SORIBNER.
