To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, HJALMER A. SwnNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looks and the principal object of the invention is to provide a plurality of plug members engaging with the bolts and adapted to be moved longitudinally to bring the slotted portions into alineinent with a slot in the bolt for permitting movement of the bolt.
Another object of the invention is to provide indicating marks for indicating when the plugs are in proper position to bring the slots in alinement to permit the bolt to be moved.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arran ement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings andspecifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of a safe provided with my improved lock.

Fig. 3 is a view of the bolt and its reciprocating means.
Fig. 4i is a view of one of the plugs.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing amodification.
Fig. 6 is a face view of the bolt of this modification.
Fig. 7 is detail sectional view showing a plug provided. with a circular rack for engaging the rack on the edge of the bolt.
As shown in these views T form a plurality of holes 1 in the rear face of the door 2 of the safe and opposite these holes 1 form a plurality of sockets 3 in the front face of the door and these sockets and holes are joined together by the small holes 41. The inner ends of the holes 1 are screw threaded as shown. A slot 5 extends inwardly from the front edge of the door to receive the bolt 6 and this slot communicates with the holes 1. The bolt is provided with holes 7 which are of the same size as the holes 1 and are Specification of Letters Patent.

spaced apart the same distance as said holes 1 are spaced apart. These holes are connected together by the slots 8. Plugs 9 engage the holes and' each plug is provided with a body part 10 to fit in the hole and the inner part of this body is screw-threaded to engage the screw threaded part of the hole. Each plug is also provided with a stem 11 to engage the small hole 1 and with a head 12 which fits in the socket 3. The head is provided with a knob 13 by which the plug may be rotated. The body 10 has its sides cut-away to form two opposing recesses 1a and the strip separating these recesses is of a size to lit the slots 8 in the bolt. The re cesses in the plugs are located at diiferent points so that the plugs must be moved longitudinally to varying degrees to bring the recesses in alinement and into a position in line with openings in the bolt. Then by turning the plugs to bring the parts separating said recesses end to end the bolt may be moved as the slots 8 therein will receive the narrow part of each body. I prefer to arrange the slots and holes in the bolt as shown in the drawings with the holes arranged in sets and the sets spaced apart and connected by a long slot. This will permit the plugs to occupy the holes of the first set when the bolt is unlocked and when the bolt is to be locked the plugs are turned to permit their narrow parts to pass through the slots until they engage the next set of holes. Then by turning the plugs the bolt will be held in locked position.
I place indicating marks 15 on the head 12 to cooperate with the mark on the face of the door to tell when the plug is in position with its recess in alinement with the bolt and I also provide indicating marks 16 on the outer part of the head for indicating when the plug is in position with the narrow part of its body ready to enter the slots in the bolt.
in this way a person cannot unlock the safe unless he knows the proper combination for setting the plugs in proper position to permit the bolt to slide by them.
The means for sliding said bolt consists of a pinion 17 engaging with a rack 18 formed on the bolt, the shaft of said pinion passing through the front of the door where it is provided with a suitable handle 18. A roller 17 engages the upper edge of the bolt and acts as a guide for the same.

instead of forming the recesses in the plugs at diii erent positions I may make the plugs of uniform shape and provide the bolt with a plurality of slots 23, each slot being out of: alinement with the adjacent slot and each slot connecting a pair of holes together.
'In this way the plugs must. be moved to varying lengths to cause their narrow parts to come into alinement with the slots so that a person must know the right distance to move said plugs before he can properly position them to free the bolt.
It is thought fromthe r'oregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A lock of the class described comprising a bolt having holes and slots therein, a plurality of plugs having restricted parts 2. A look of the class described comprising a body having a slot therein and holes communicating with said slot, said holes having screw threaded portions, a bolt in said slot provided with holes and slots, a plurality of plugs parts engaging the screw parts of the holes and restricted parts for fitting the slots in the bolt, said plugs having their ends projecting through the body where they are provided with handles and indicating marks on said handles.
3. A look of the class described comprising a body having openings therein and a slot communicating with the openings, a bolt in said slot having openings and slots therein, a plurality of plugs in said openings in the body and passing through the openings in the bolt, said plugs having restricted parts for fitting the slots in the bolt, said plugs having longitudinal and rotary movement for placing the restricted parts in alinement with the slots in the bolt, hand engaging parts on the plugs projecting from the body, a rack on the bolt and a rotatable member having a rack thereon for engaging the rack on the bolt.
