WOODEN SHOE 0B, SANDL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed April 8, 1919. Serial No. 288,584.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, PETER DEMARMELS and ALBERT' WINKLER, both citizens of Switzerland, and residents, respectively, of the city of New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, and of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Wooden Shoe or Sandal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to footwear, and its object is to provide a new and improved wooden shoe or sandal having a wooden sole made in sections hinged together to provide a desired flexibility and thus to insure ease and comfort in walking. Another object is to conceal the hinges connectlng the sole sections with each other to prevent corroding influences such as moisture, water, acids and the like, from reaching and injuring the hinges.
With these' and yother objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, 1n which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved footwear; y
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same-with parts shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the double hinge;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the intermediate sole section; and
Fig. (i is a similar view of one of the filling pieces for the intermediate sole section.
The wooden sole of the footwear is formed of a heel and instep section 10, a toe section 11, and an intermediate section 12 hingedly connected with each other, to render the sole flexible, as hereinafter more fully explained. As shown in the drawings, the footwear is in the form of a sandal and for this purpose the heel and instep section 10 is provided with a buckle strap 13, and a similar strap'14 is attached to the toe section 11 for fastening the sandal in position on the wearers foot, but itis expressly understood that we do not limit ourselves to this particular application of our invention.
The forward end of the heel and instep section 10 is formed into a half round tongue 20 which ts into a correspondingly shaped groove 21 formed in the rear end of the intermediate section 12, which latter is provided at its forward end with a half round tongue 22 fitting into a correspondingly shaped recess 23 formed in the rear end of the toe section 11; Thus by the interlocking tongues and grooves 20, 21 and 22, 23 the sole sections are'mounted to swing one on the other thus giving the desired flexibility to the sole.
In order to fasten the sole sections together use is made of a double hinge 25 formed of two leaves 26 and 27, and two pintles 28, 29 formed of a single piece of wire bent into an approximately rectangular shape to provide the said pintles with side arms 30 and 31, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. The intles 28 and 29 engage the eyes 32 and 33 o the leaves 26 and 27. The side arms 30 and 31 lit into lengthwise extending grooves 34, 35 formed in the top of the intermediate section 12, and after the said side arms 30 and 31 are in position in the grooves 34, 35 the latter are closed by filling pieces 36 glued or otherwise fastened in place to. hold the pintlesv 28, 29 and the side arms 30,.
31 in position in the intermediate section 12. The leaves 26 and 27'are preferably made triangularin shape, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and lit into correspondingly shaped recesses 40, 41 formed kin the forward portion of the heel and instep section 10 and the rear end of the toe section l1, and the said leaves 26 and 27 are fastened in place in the said sections 10 and 11 by nails 42, 43 or other fastening devices driven into position on the top of the corresponding sole sections 10 and 11. rlhe eye 32 of the leaf 26 projects into a recess 45 which forms an enlargement of the recess 40, and the said eye 32 has its center coinciding with the center of the half round tongue 20. Portions of the side arms 30 and 31 extend into this recess 45. The eye 33 of the leaf 27 projects into a recess 46 formed in the tongue 22 at the forward end of the intermediate section 12, and the center of the eye 33 coincides with the center of thehalf round tongue 22,
los
The grooves 34, 35 'lead to this recess, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the sections are connected with each other by a double hinge practically con` cealed within the sections of the sole so asy to prevent corroding influences such as moisture, water, acids and the like, from reaching and injuring the hinges. vIt will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the desired flexibility is had to insure ease and comfort to the wearer of the wooden shoe or sandal.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent:
1. In footwear of the type described, a sole comprising a heel and instep section, a toe section and an intermediate section, the sections having their adjacent ends provided with engaging tongues and grooves to perniit flexing of the sole, and a double hinge connecting the sections with each other, said hinge including leaves having eyes, and pintles engaging the eyes, said leaves being fixed in the said toe and the said heel and instep sections with their eyes coinciding with the centers of the said tongues, and the pintles being held in the said intermediate section.
2. In footwear of the type described, a sole comprising a heel and instep section, a toe section and an intermediate section, the sections having their adjacent ends provided with engaging tongues and grooves to permit flexing of the sole, and a double hinge con-- necting the sections with each other, said hinge consisting of leaveshaving eyes and fixed in the said toe and the said heel and instep sections with their eyes coinciding with the cntersof the said tongues, and a double pintle made of a single piece of material having side members and end members, the side members being disposed in the intermediate section and the end members forming thc pintles.
3. In footwear of the type described, a sole comprising a heel and instep section, a toe section and an intermediate section, the sections having their adjacent ends provided with engaging tongues and grooves to permit flexing of the sole, the said heel and instep section and the, said toe section having recesses at their ends, the said intermediate section having a recess at the forward end in register with therecess in the toe section, the said intermediate section having lengthwise extending grooves, and a double hinge connecting the said sections with each other,
`said hinge consisting of two leaves and pintles engaging the eyes, one of the leaves being secured in the recess in the said heel and instep section and the other leaf secured in the recess of the toe section, the eyes of the leaves. being at the centers of the said tongues, the said pintles being made of a single piece of wire bent into rectangular.
form and having portions forming pintles engaging the said eyes and having portions engaging the said lengthwise extending grooves in the intermediate section, and fastenings attaching the said leaves to the corresponding Sole sections.
