Application filed June 7, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMILIA lVIsN-inwsiia, citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Vashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shopping- Bags, of which the following is a specification.
rIhifg invention relates to bags or containers, the object being to provide a bag formed of comparatively stiif material, which may be folded into compact form when not in use and which may be expanded for the purpose of filling and when so expanded will remain in such position to facilitate the insertion of articles therein.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bag of this character, the body portion of which may be cut from a single piece of material, folded and joined to provide a substantially rectangular receptacle open at the top and having a lid or closure, resulting in a bag which is neat and attractive in appearance, compact in form and which may be manufactured at a low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the acl companying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bag folded;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view l of the same taken through the central portion of the bag and parallel with the strengthening strips;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bag expanded;
Fig. 4 is a section with the bag in the position shown in Fig. 2, the former being taken at right angles to this'iigure;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bag eX- panded; and
Fig. 6 is a plan of the blank of which the bag is formed.
Referring more specifically to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the bag includes side panels 10 and 11, a bottom panel 12, end panels 13 and closure flaps 14 and 15.
These panels and Haps of which the bag is formed are cut from a single blank of material of the shape shown in Fig. 6. The side panels 10 and 11 being positioned upon each side of the longitudinal edges of the bottom panel 12, the blank being folded along the dotted lines 16. The end panels 13 Specification of Letters Patent.

are each formed by j oroviding sections or flaps 17 which extend from the side edges of the side panels 10 and 11 and the ends of the bottom panel 12, the material being cut away along` the ends of the bottom panel 12 to separate the flaps 17. The material is folded along the dotted lines 19 in the formation of the bag. Extending from the outer edges of each of the side panels 10, and 11 are the closure flaps 141 and 15 respectively, the material being folded along the dotted lines 20.
In the formation of the bag the blank is folded on the dotted lines 16, 19 and 2O into a substantially rectangular form, the edges 21 of the flap 17 being stitched or otherwise secured along the ends of the bottom panel 12, thc outer longitudinal edges 22 of the flap 17 abut anld are joined preferably by a strip 23 stitched to each of the flaps so as to complete the end panels 13. If desired a suitable binding 211 may be placed along the ends of the bottom flap 12 at its juncture with the end panels 13. The closure flaps-14 and 15 are then folded inwardly along the dotted lines 20.
In order to compactly fold the bag, the end panels 13 are creased along the dotted lines 25 and folded inwardly along the edges 22, while the bottom panel is creased and folded along the dotted line 26. 1When folded in compact form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the closure flaps 111 and 15 are foldejd inwardly against the inner face of the side panels 10 and 11.
rIhe closure flap 14C is preferably provided with buttons 27 and the flaps 15 with tabs 28, which are slit as at 29 to provide holes for the reception of the buttons 27.
In order to strengthen the bag strips 30 extendn transversely therearound. These strips are spaced apart and their upper ends terminate in loops 31, to provide grips or handles. This relieves the body portion of the bag from strain, the weight resting 'directly upon the straps 30. If desired the side panel 10 may be provided with a pocket 32 upon the outer face thereof, while a flap 33 also secured to the outer face of the panel 10 is adapted to form a closure for the said pocket. lIhe pocket carries a button 34 while the flap 33 is provided with a slit 35 to receive the button. If desired the bag may be ornamented with buttons or other ornamental devices 36 spaced around the strap 30.
The bag may be formed of various mateing formed of flaps extending from eaell edge of the silde panels, the said flaps being separated by the Width of the bottoni panel and the blank being folded With the outer longitudinal edges of the flaps abutting, elosure flaps extending from the outer edges of the side panels, and ineans for securing` the adjacent edges of the Walls together in a manner to permit of the bag being folded in a dat condition. y
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
