UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KINNEY, OF ELMIRA, NEVI YORK, E SSIGNR (1F ONE-HALF TO LOUISE MAY OSTRANDER, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
PLOW.
Speoication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application led August 12, 1919. Serial No. 316,959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and btate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and has for an object to provide means for attaching plows to a wheeled vehicle embodying new and improved features of convenience, reliability and economy in operation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a View of the improved plow in side elevation attached to a conventional form of vehicle; and
Fig. 2 is a viewof the plow in .top plan, likewise attached to a conventional vehicle.
The improved plow which forms the subject matter of this application is disclosed in its generic form in application No. 259,791. filed October 26, 1918. The present application is directed to the plow structure per se as distinguished from the tractor structure which forms the subject matter ct the application just above mentioned and comprises any convenient or preferred form of vehicular structure disclosed generally by the structure 10. To the structure of whatever formation are pivoted one or more frames 11 and 12. In the drawings two of these frames have been shown. but it is to be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the number of such frames or plows to be carried thereby but includes theiuse of a single frame or a multiplicity of frames as the requirements of the work may make necessary. The frame, or frames, is, or are, also pivoted to the vehicular structure in any approved manner. In the type as shown in the drawings side bars 13 are disclosed attached to the axle 14 in any conventional manner and for the purpose of strengthening provided with a rear brace 15. Between the side bars 13 a shaft 16 is secured and upon this shaft 16 the frames 11 and 12 are pivoted as indicated at 17. Thus far the frames 11 and 12 are free to move about their shaft 16. With two frames 11 and 12, two plows 18 and 19 will also be employed 'and connected with the frames 11 and 12 by means of arms 20 and 21 connected respectively with the beams 22 and 23, preferably by pivoting thereto as more particularly indicated at 241 and 25. The arms 2O and 21 are respectively provided with cross bars 26 and 27 the length o f which are substantially the transverse dimensions of frames 11 and 12. The cross bars 26 and 27 are provided with rollers 28 which bear upon the top or upper edges of the frames 11 and 12 respectively with keepers 29 disposed beneath the under or lower edges of the frames 11 and 12 to maintain the cross bars 26 in position. It is obvious that by reason of the spaced pivoting of the frames 11 and 12 such frames will be held against lateral swinging action thereby properly positioning the plows 18 and 19 without in any manner interfering with their vertical movements. The plows are preferably connected through their beams 22 and 23 with the yoke 3() in any approved manner as by pivoting at 31 and a draw bar 32 is pivoted to the yoke 3() and vis extended forward and connected to the draft means disclosed conventionally by the evener 33. The manner of connecting the draft means with draw bar 32 forms no limitation of the present invention but preferably is by means of a link 34 extending upwardl to the tongue 35 of the vehicle whereby draft is also applied to the vehicle as well as to the plows to insure simultaneous action.
For the purpose of lifting the plows out of operative position as shown at Fig. 1 a crank shaft 36 is journalcd upon the vehicle as indicated at 37 and a lever 38 and segment 39 are employed for applying manual stress thereto in the usual well known man ner. The shaft is connected with the plow beams 22 and 23 in any well known manner as by chains -l0. A seat A11 is mounted conveniently upon a spring l12 for the use of the operator.
To insure the proper depth of plowing dependence is not placed in any respect upon the vehicular structure but a caster wheel 43 is applied to each of the beams 22 and 23 with the usual and ordinary adjusting means by means of the bar 114. By adjusting the position of the caster wheel L13 relative to the beams the depth of plowing is regulated.
It is obvious in operation the lowering of the plows by manipulation of the lever 38 will bring the plows into contact with the earth in the usual well known manner and the forward movement of the vehicle will cause the plows to enter the earth until they have reached the depth provided by their caster wheel, when they will follow a course corresponding to the surface of the earth. The plows thus mounted are wholly free of the vehicle so far as vertical movement is concerned, but their lateral position is controlled by their frames ll and l2 which oifer no resistance to vertical movement or in any way control the depth but only the width of furrow.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A plow comprising a vehicular structure, a 'frame pivoted to the vehicular structure at spaced points and adapted to swing in a vertical plane, a plow beam connected with the frame by means of a sliding engagement, means independent of the frame t0 raise and lower the plow relative to the vehicular structure, and means to regulate the depth of the plow.
2. A plow comprising a vehicular structure, a frame having spaced bars pivoted at correspondingly spaced points upon the vehicular structure and free to move upon its pivot in a vertical plane, a plow, rollers carried by the plow bearing upon the frame Vproviding means whereby the plow is free 'to move longitudinally relative tothe irame but is vlaterally restrained thereby, means to raise and lower' the plow and connected frame, and means to regulate the depth of the plow.
3. A plow comprising a vehicular structure embodying a frame, an auxiliary frame comprising spaced side bars pivot-ally connected to the vehicular structure at correspondingly. spaced points and adapted to swing in a vertical plane, a plow disposed beneath the auxiliary frame, a cross bar extending beneath the bars or the auxiliary frame, rollers carried by the crossbars movable upon the auxiliary frame, means connecting'the cross barV with the plow, means to regulate the depth of the plow independently olf the auxiliary frame, and means to apply draft to the plow.
et. A plow comprising` a vehicular structure embodying a frame, an auxiliary frame pivotally connected with the vehicular iframe at points and embodying spaced side bars iree to move upon its pivot in a vertical plane but restrained from lateral variation, a plow beneath the auxiliary trame, a cross bar extending between the side bars of the auxiliary frame, rollers journaled upon the cross bars and bearing upon the sides of the auxiliary frame, means pivotally connecting the cross bar with the plow, whereby the plow is free to move longitudinally of but restricted laterally relative to the auxiliary frame, means to raise and lower the plow and auxiliary frame relative to the vehicular structure, means to regulate the depth of the plow independently ol the vehicular structure, and means to apply draft to the plow.
A plow comprising a vehicular structure, a frame pivoted to the vehicular structure at spaced points and adapted to swing in a vertical plane, a plow beam connected with the frame by means of a sliding eugagement, means independent of the lirame to raise andlower the plow relative to the vehicular structure, means to apply draft to the plow independently of the raising and lowering means, and means to regulate the depth of the plow.
6. A plow comprising a vehicular strueture, a frame having spaced bars pivoted at. correspondingly spaced points upon the vehicular structure and free to move upon its pivots in a vertical plane, a plow, rollers` carried by the plow bearing upon the frame providing means whereby the plow is l'rce 'to nieve longitudinally relative to the ii'ralue but is laterally restrained thereby, means to raise and lower the plow and connected frame, means to apply drait to the plow independently of the raising. and lowering means, and means to regulate the depth ol the plow.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Elmira, New York. this 8th day of August, A. D. nineteen hundred and nineteen.
CHARLES KINNEY. lVitness:
YV. E. VUNK.
