Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SOGGS, OF COLUMBUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-KNIVES- S peclfieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,106, dated December 17, 1872.
N atnre and Object of the Invention.
My invention relates to a new method of attaching a guard and sleeve to the blade of paring and slicing knives.
Description of Drawing.
I Figure 1 shows the form of the guard and sleeve. Fig. 2 is a view of the knife with notch in the back of the blade at the point D. Fig. 3 is a front view of the knife with my invention attached. Fig. 4 is an end view of my device.
K is the knife-handle, to which is attached the knife-blade H, in which is cut the angular notch D for the purpose of rendering effective the attachment of the guard L by means of the hooked arm B. L is a guard placed'parallel to the blade, and is attached at the front end by means of a serrated arm, 0, and at the rear end by the hooked arm B. This guard is provided with loose sleeve A, and affords a defense for the thumb and fingers, and also regulates the thickness of the paring takenfrom the fruit or vegetable. The arm 0 is provided with notches conveniently arranged for the proper adjustment of the guard for regulating the thickness of the paring.
The mode of effecting the adjustment of this guard is as follows: Insert the arm'B in the angular notch D and bring the end of the arm 0 to touch the end of the blade near E; spring the arm 0 over the edge of the blade, catching in the desired notch. It will be found that the hooked arm B impinging against the notch D and the handle K, in conjunction with the guard L, forms a spring that holds the guard vertically against the blade and firmly in place when caught by means of the arm 0. It will also be seen that the angular notch D prevents the hooked arm B from being forced from its position when the arm 0 is in position, but rendering the removal of the guard easy upon displacing the arm 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The adjustable guard L, provided with serrated arm 0 and loose sleeve A, in combina: tion with knife-blade H having notch D, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY SOGGS.
