DISH-WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed January 2, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. ASHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Dish-Washing -Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for washing dishes and other similar articles by forcing jets of water against them; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section through a dish washing machine constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine with. the cover and dish rack removed. F ig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion of the water pipe, drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 4 is aplan view of one of the nozzles.
A supporting base 2 is provided, and 3 is I a conical pan supported by the base. A water inlet pipe 4 pro ects vertically through the apex of the pan, and is secured to it by a collar 5 or any other approved means. 'The upper end portion of the water pipe has lateral outlet holes 6 for the water, and 7 is an annular water chamber which is journaled over the outlet holes 6, and arranged to revolve in ball bearings 8 supported by the. water pipe.
Water jet pipes 9 are arranged to project from the water chamber. Four jet pipes are preferably provided, and two of them are longer than the other two, and are arranged etween them. Allthe jet pipes are angle-shaped and they are inclined upwardly and circumferentially, and are arranged at equal distances apart. Each water jet pipe has a cap or nozzle 10 secured to its end portion, and provided with a ta'per ing cross-shaped outlet 12. A valve 14 is providedfor regulating the admission of water through the water pipe.
A water waste pipe 1-5 is secured to the lower end of the conical pan and is provided with a regulating valve 16. An overflow pipe 17 is connected to the upper part of the conical pan and to the waste pipe 15 beyond the valve 16, so that the overflow pipe is always open.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'over the said pan.
Serial No. 348,721.
' The plates, tea-cups, or other articles to be washed are placed in a suitable crate 20 hav- 'ing crossbars 21 on and between which the articles are supported, and the crate is placed on top of the conical pan. A cover 24: is placed over. the conical pan and the crate, the whole being supported by the base.
The cover has an outlet hole 25 at its top for air and steam.
Inclined propeller blades 26 are arranged in the conical pan below the Water jet pipes, and are secured to the water chamber 7 by arms 27.
Hot water and cleansing material, such as soap, are placed in the conical pan, and water is forced under pressure through the Water pipe. The pressure of the water which issues from the nozzles revolves the jet pipes and the propeller blades rapidly in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2;- The pro-.
peller blades force the suds upwardly against the articles, and the water from the jet pipes washes the'articles. The surplus water passes off by the overflow pipe, and the valve 16 is opened when it is desired to empty the conical pan.
What I claim is:
1. In a washing machine, a conical pan, a

water supply pipe projecting vertically and centrally in the. pan, an annular waterchamber journaled on the upper part of the water supply pipe, inclined water jet pipes-connected to the said water chamber and operating to revolve it, propeller blades which revolve with the water chamber and force the contents of the pan upwardly, and means for supporting the articles 'to be washed 2. In a washing machine, a conical pan, :a water supply pipe secured to the apex of the pan and projecting upwardly within it and having lateralk o'utlet holes at. its upper part, an annular Water chamber journaled on the water pipe over its said outlet holes, inclined water jet pipes connected to the said water chamber and operating to revolve it, propeller blades which revolve with the water chamber and force the contents of the pan upwardly, and means 'for supporting the articles to be washed over the pan.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
WILLIAM CURTIS ASHLEY.
