Be it known that 1, JAMES C. H. VnUerrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New .York, .have made a certain new and useful Invention in Power-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to power drills, and particularly to the class which uses a shell or support and a feed screw with which the machine is fed forward to its work during the drilling operation.
The object of the invention is to provide a power drill which is simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
.1 further object of the invention is to provide a feed attachment which may. be applied to standard types of power drills.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feed apparatus for a drill of the class described whereby a machine may be fed forward by means of the usual feed screw, and in addition thereto to provide a means to render the feed-screw inoperative when it is necessary to return the machine to is rearward or retracted position. The object of rendering the usual feed screw inoperative when it becomes necessary to return the same to its retracted position is to save time which with the present type of power drills is now lost in forcing the machine rearwardly.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth as shown in the accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wvherever it occurs throughout the several views.
In the construction of mounted power drills using a shell or support it is the usual custom to supply such machines with a feed screw to feed the machine forward during the drilling operation, and by the use of the same feed screw it is the practice to return the same to its initial position. The forward and rearward movement of the machine is made possible in machines now in common use by providing the cylinder of the machine with an eye on the under side of the machine and at the rear end of the cylinder. Into this eye is placed what is commonly called a feed nut which projects beyond the eye of the cylinder, and on the projecting portion of the feed nut it is the practice to provide a jam nut, the purpose of the jam nut being to hold the cylinder and the feed nut in rigid unison. It is obvious that the feed nut must be provided with a threaded screw within its interior in which the usual feed. screw moves when the machine is being fed forward as well as screw, yoke, and crank, disassembled from when it is being returned or retractedto'its not be speeded beyond the cutting capacity of the drill bit. It is likewise apparent that in returning the machine to its initial or rearwardposition the operation is as slow as the maximum speed that; can be attained in advancing the machine, and consequently the lossof much time is the inevitable result. In power drilling: work where efficiency is to be maintained anytime wasted such as is required to return the machine to its re tracted position is objectionable. -Vith a view of overcomingparticularly this objection it is the purpose-of-my present inven tion to design and devise a means to feed a machine forward and to allow the machine to be retracted quickly; Another advantage ofmy invention is that the control of the feed apparatus renders it possible' to ad Vance the ma hine forward-lyas far as 'desired without necessitating the use :of said .screwn' The advantageof'tlns is that'when forward until the drill bit' is in contact with 5 the rock causes an additionalloss' of'time.

The cylinder and machine proper are assembled with the several parts composing Fig. 10 as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Fig. ll shows a yoke 8 which is secured to the rear e d of the shell rods and in which the plane m mber 17 when the same is pulled backward into the position shown in full lines Fig. 2. In practice when it becomes necessary to force the machine to its rear wai position the operator forces theinclined plane member 1? to its fartherinost rearward position as shown in Fig; 1 thereby lifting the gib out of engagement with thofeedis mew. When it is desired to feed the machineforwardly and slowly during the drilling operation th operator forces the inclined plahemember 1'7 to its fa rther most forward position as shown in dotted lines 25, Fig. 2, thus allowing the gib to engage with tho feed screw, whereby upon rotation of the feed screw the mac iine is fed forwardly. From the foregoing it will be apparent that l have prm'ided a. rock drilling machine attachment which all-(Yves the machine to be fed forward in the usual manner of slot. feed and at the same time to render the feed screw inoperative to allowa quick retraction ofthe ;.achine or a quick forwardfeed-of the machine to its operative position, and v wherein the operation is performed-by hand in a smallfractionnof the time nowrequired for similar purposes by the usualfee'd screw method which is the universal type of power.
modifications and variations in details will readily occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the claims, and I therefore desire that the foregoing specific structures be interpreted in an illustrative sense rather than in a limiting sense.
Having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described in detail structures embodying the principles thereof, what 1 claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is '1. In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, an eye or opening in the rear end of the cylinder of the machine, a tube located in said eye and having a smooth inner surface and a threaded outer surface, means for holding the tube and cylinder in rigid unison, a feed screw located in said 7 tube, a housing located on said tube and rovided with a slot a '1b located in SELlCl' slot, a band surrounding the housing and gib to hold the same in unison, and means to raise and lower the gib.
2. In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, an eye or opening in the rear end of the cylinder of the machine, a tube located insaid eye and having a smooth in nor surface and a threaded outer surface,
means for holding the tube and cylinder in rigid unison, a feed screw located in said tube, a housing located on said tube and provided with a slot, a gib located in said slot; at band surrounding the housing and gib to hold the same in unison, means to raise and lower the gib, and means to lock the gib in its raised position.
3. In a rock drilling machine,a shell or support, said machine being carried by said support, and having an eye in its rear end,-
a tube passing through said eye and having a smooth inner surface and threaded outer surface, means for holding the tube and cylinder in rigid unison, a housing carried by said tube, a slot in said housing and tube,
a gib located therein, an inclined plane member engaging said gib to raise and lower the same, and a band surrminding said housing, gib, and inclined plane member to hold the parts in unison.

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, an eye or opening in the rear end of the cylinder of the machine, a tube located in said eye and having a smooth innor surface and a threaded outer surface. means to hold the tube and cylinder in rigid unison, a feed screw located in said tube, a housing carried by said tube, a slot located in said housing and tube, a threaded gib located in said slot, a band surrounding the housing and gib, a spring located between the band and gib and normally tending to force the gib to mesh with the feed screw while the machine is being fed forward dur ing the drilling operation thereof,and means to raise the gib out of meshing engagement with the feed screw.

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, an eye or opening in therear end of the cylinder of the machine, a tube located in said eye and having a smooth inner surface and a threaded outer surface, means to hold the tube and cylinder in rigid unison, a feed screw located in said. tube, a housing carried by said tube, a slot located in said housing and tube, a threaded gib located in said slot, a band surrounding the housing and gib, a spring located between the band and the gib and normally tending to force the gib to mesh with the feed screw while the machine is being fed forward during the drilling operation thereof, means to raise the gib out of meshing engagement with the feed screw,-and means for locking said gib in its raised position.

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted. type, a cylinder, a tube secured to said cylinder, a feed screw carried by said tube, a housing secured to said tube, a gib located in said housing, said gib provided with means to engage said feed screw to travel along same in one direction or the other when said feed screw is rotated, and means for disengaging said gib from said feed screw.
9. In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, a cylinder, a tube secured to said cylinder, a feed screw carried by said tube, a housing secured to said tube, a

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, a cylinder, a tube secured to said cylinder, a feed screw carried by said tube, a housing secured to said tube, a slot located in said housing and tube,=a gib located in said slot, said gib being concaved on its lower face and provided with threads adapted to mesh with said feed screw, and means for forcing said gib out of engagement with the feed screw.

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, a cylinder, a tube secured to said cylinder, a feed screw carried by said tube, a housing secured to said tube, a slot located in said housing and tubeya gib lo- *ated 111 said slot, said gib being concaved on its lower face and provided'with threads adapted to mesh with said feed screw, means for forcing said gibout of engagement wlth the feed screw, and means for locking said gib out of engagement with said feed screw.

In a rock drilling machine of the mounted type, cylinder, a tube secured to said cylinder, a feed screw carriedby' said tube, a housing secured to said tube, a gib located in said housing, said gib being con-- caved on its lower face and-said face being provided with threads adapted to mesh wlth' said feed screw,and means for disengaging said gib from said feed screw.
