Description

- R. A. THOMPSON AND L. P. MORRIS.
CHURN.
APPLJCATION FILED SEPT. 25. I919.

ROBERT A. THoMrsorI AND BUT/E PI. MORRIS, or DALLAS, rnxasassreN-on T0 INTERNATIONAL MANuracrUn-nve ooivrranr or'rnxas, or DALLAS, TEXAS.
GHURN;
Application filed Eepteinber 25, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it'known that we, ROBERT A. TI-roirrsoN and Lori: P. Morons, citizens of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relat'esto new and useful improvements in churns.
The object of the invention is to provide a churning receptacle of a simple and novel construction embodying certain improved and advantageous features which make for ease of operation, eliiciency and sanitation.
A. particular point of novelty resides in the cover and dasher, or miner which is carried thereby. lhe cover is provided with a pair of flanges between which a packing gasket is seated so as to engage on the upper end of the churning receptacle and the inner flange is positioned to smigly engage the inner wall of the receptacle so that the contents cannot splash out. An advantage is had by depending the inner ilangebelow the outer flange so as to give a better contact with the receptacle and also support a fixed dasher which depends into the receptacle.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciiiication and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an enample of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Figure l is an external view of the churn and its carrier,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the churn,
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a detail showing the carrier on the cover of the receptacle.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a cylindrical receptacle or can suitable for churning, and preferably made of metal, but not necessarily so. The upper end of the can is open. A cover 11 haying a conical top is provided at its .margln with a depending annular fiange 12, the internal diameter of which is greater than the mean diameter of the can. The inner flange 13 depends from the cover in concentrlc relation to the flange 12', and has such a diameter as to snugly engage the inner surface of the can.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented MaylS, 1920.
Serial No. 326,236.
A packing gasket 14 is seated in the annular space provided between the flanges and has a face sufliciently wide to engage on cans which may vary slightly in diameter. The flange 13 depends some distance below the flange 1'2 and thus has an increased area of contact with the can, thereby precluding splashing of the contents from the can when (Bo-acting with the gasket.
lfn operating the churning receptacle it is rcciprooated longitudinally, and a dasher or mixer placed at one end of the receptacle has been found advantageous. We believe it'better to place the mixer or "flasher on the cover so that it may be removed therewith and cleansed. Therefore, we have attached to the inner face of the flange 13, a dasher 15 which has a. yoke shape and carries a horiaontal baffle 16 at right angles thereto, and projects equally on each side thereof at the center of the receptacle. The dasher has holes 1? on each side of the baflle so that the milk and butter fat may pass through the same.
The can is mounted in a carrier which includes a cap 18 and a supporting plate 19 connected by vertical bolts 20 which receive wing nuts 21 firmly clamping the can and gover in the carrier. Coiled springs 22 ea tend up and down from the cap and plate an d assist in the reciprocation of the carrier.
It is pointed out that the cap 18 as is best shown in Fig. 4 is less in diameter than the cover 11 so as to exert an even downward pressure on the cover whereby the gasket 14 binds on the upper edge of the an. It will be seen that by making the top of the cover conical and likewise forming the cap 18, the cover will project up into the cap and is not easily displaced therefrom.
The churn is operated by placing the hand on the cap 18 and forcing the carrier downward against the. tension of the upper spring which is thereby tensioned and carries the same upward when the pressure is released, which results in the tensioning of the lower spring and the latter assists the operator in again forcing the same downward. This movement becomes very rapid. The contents of the can is thrown upward and upon contacting with the dasher and baffle is mixed and the fat globules broken up.
lVhat we claim, is:
1. In a churn of the character described, a
receptacle, a cover for the, open end of the receptacle, said cover having a top which is substantially conical and tapers upwardly, said cover having an inner flange secured thereto and adapted to fit snugly within the free end of the receptacle, said cover also having an outer flange secured thereto and surrounding the first named flange and receptacle in spaced relation, a gasket held between the flangesand engaging the free end of the receptacle, a cap provided with a flange of smaller diameter than the cover and engaging the conicalv top thereof, and means connected with the re ceptacle to draw the cap inwardly toward the same.
2. In a churn of the character described, a receptacle, a cover for the open end of the receptacle, said cover having a top which is substantially conical and tapers upwardly, said cover having an inner flange secured thereto and adapted to fit snugly within the open end of the receptacle, packing means arranged between the free end of the receptacle and the cover, a cap provided with a circumferential edge engaging the coni cal top of the cover, and adjustable elements connected with the receptacle and engaging said cover.
3. In a churn of the character described, a receptable, a cover for the open end of the receptacle, said cover having a top which is substantially conical and tapers upwardly, said cover having a flange depending therefrom to engage with the open end of the receptacle, packing means arranged between the free end of the receptacle and the cover, a cap provided with a depending flange to engage the conical. top and having a smaller diameter than the same, and having apertured lugs, rods extending longitudinally of the receptacle and having screw-threaded ends extending through the apertured lugs, and nuts carried by the screw-threaded ends of the rods.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures.
ROBERT A. THOMPSON. LUTE P. MORRIS.
