To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Moornnv BROWN, of the city of IIamilton, in the county of Wentworth,.Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crimped-Elbow- Bending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' Myinvention relates to improvements in crimped elbow bending machines, and the object of the invent-ion is to devise a machine of this class which will expeditiously bend a perfect elbow of this class.
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing' my improved crimped elbow bending machine in its initial position preparatory to bending the elbow.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with portion of the frame broken away.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking' toward the cap end.
In the drawings like characters of ref-- erence` indicate corresponding' parts in the various figures.
1 is the base frame of' the machine at one end of which isa standard 1. 2 is a standard plate, which is secured on the base 1 as adicated bythe cross plate 2 which forms part' o-f the standard plate. 3 is a cylinder former; which has end flanges 3 b y which it is secured by suitable bolts 32 to the standard plate 2. The plate 2 has central orifice 22.
4 isV the interior. formingdie or mandrel which has an arc-shaped outer end 4 around which the elbow is designed to be bent and a reduced' inner end 42` which fits the orifice 22'and is provided with a reduced threaded outer end `43 upon which isiitted the nut 5, which-thereby secures the interiorforming mandrel in position. The interior mandrel 4 is provided with slots4* located diametrically oppositelto each other.
7' is'a cross bar. which extends through the end of the slot-44 and carries a rod 8, which derives movement as will hereinafter appear.
9 is a col-lar, which extends around the interior forming mandrel 4 fitting the space betweenv it and the outer cylinder 3. The collar 9 abuts the cross bar 7 and is provided with a groove 9 to receive the end of the pipe.-
1.0 isa retaining cap. which is held on the end of the cylinder by means of bell cranks 11:- one on each side of the cylinder, the
hooked ends 11 of which extend over a pin 10.
The opposite ends of the bell cranks are held by means of the spiral springs 112 and thereby hold the vhook in position on the pin 10.
The interior of the cap 10 is provided with a groove 102 to receive the opposite end' of the pipe, which is designed to form the elbow. This pipe it will be noticed is a crimped pipe and it is necessary to have it crimped inorder to form the elbow.
I do not describe the manner in which the pipe is crimped as it forms no part of my invention.
rlhe cap 10 has a lug 103 formed on the outside provided with a pin 12 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. 13 is a guide-way which is supported on the top of the cylinder 3. 14 is a slide bar, which extends through the guide-way and has pivotally connected to the outer end the arm 1K5, which is provided with a=v hooked end 15. The slide bar 14 is provided with a stop 14', a notch 142, an inclined side next the stop and a stop 143 and an inclined end 144'. p
16 is an upright through which the slide 14 extends. The lower end of the upright 16 is provided with a headed screw 17 which is adjustable therein.
The rod Shereinbefore referred to is connected to the ram 8 as is also the upright 16.
The ram 8 derives movement from the crank i shaft in the ordinary manner as in power presses.
As the means for driving the rod 8 and its parts form no feature of my invention I do not further describe itexcept to say that the ram is thrown into and out of gear as is usual-by the yfoot lever 18 in the manner ordinarily incident to presses of this class.
In order to relieve the jar and noise I provide a cushion washer 145 to the inside of the stop 143.
It is necessary that'means should be provided to release the cap 10, and I therefore utilizeva rod 19,v which passes through the upright 3', and a guide 20 and has a spring 21 extending between the upright 3 and the nut 22 on the rod. The rod is opposite the Set screw 17. This rod is as will be seen opposite the bottom end of the bellv crank 111.
Having now described the principal parts involved in my invention I shall briefly describe its operation and utility.
Preliminarily the cap 10 is removed and the corrugated pipe as indicated in-Fig. 1 is inserted with the inner straight edge in the groove 9 of the collar 9 surrounding the inner mandrel 4. The cap 10 with its groove 102 is placed in position, so that the outer end of the crimp pipe lits into the groove 102, the cap being held in place by the spring` held bell cranks 11 one on each side. rIhe machine is then ready to operate. rlhe ram 8 is caused to move forward carrying with it the upright 16 and also the collar 9 by means of the cross bar 7, thereby serving to compress the crimping pipe into more contracted form. The upright 16 in the movement of the rod 8 carries with it the stop 14 and consequently the slide bar 14 and hooked end of the arm 15 past the pin 12. At the same time the headed screw 17 pushing on the rod 19 releases the bell crank 11 and at this point the retrograde movement takes place and hook of the rod 15 engages the pin 12, and the slide bar 14 as it draws on the arm 15 swings up the cap 10 and thereby expanding the previously crimped pipe into the form of a crimped elbow, the wider portions of the crimp being necessarily on the long side of the elbow as indicated.
This retrograde movement is caused by the bar 16 engaging the square end of the notch 142 as indicated in Fig. 2 and such engagement continues until the inclined end of the bar 14 reaches the inclined top of the bar 162, which raises the slide bar 14 so as to release the slot in the bar 16 from engagement therewith and thus allows the bar to come up to the stop 142, which is its normal position.
When the elbow is crimped the hooked end'of the bar 15 is unhooked and the cap 10 removed and the crimped elbow taken out completed. The new corrugated piece of pipe is then placed in position as before and the cap 10 replaced and held in position by the hooked end of the bell crank 11 ready Jr'or another operation.
From this description it will be seen that by a machine made according to my inventipn I am enabled to bend and compress a p ipe into the Jform of an elbow in one continuous operation which is an important desideratum.
Ihat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a crimped elbow bending machine, the combination with the outer 'cylinder suitably supported on the frame, of an inner cylinder forming an interior annular chamberto receive a crimped blank with the outer cylinder, means for contracting the crimps within the chamber, and means for ejecting the contracted pipe and bending the same as 1t is being ejected.
2. In a crimped elbow bending machine, the combination with the outer cylinder suitably supported on the frame, of an inner cylinder forming an interior annular chamber with the outer cylinder, a cap for the outerV end of the cylinder, means for normally holding the cap in position while the pipe is being crimped and means for swinging the cap outwardly and upwardly as the pipe is being ejected.
3. In a crimped elbow bendino' machine, the combination with the outer cylinder and standard plate supporting the same having a central orifice and the inner'cylinder provided with a closed threaded end extending through the orifice and provided with slots diametricallylocated, of the ram and rod thereof extending through the reduced end of the inner cylinder and provided with a cross bar extending through the slots, a collar surrounding the inner cylinder and abutting the cross bar and provided with receiving groove for one end of the pipe, a cap provided with a receiving groove for the opposite end of the pipe and means for releasing the cap and swinging it upwardly.
4. In a crimped elbow bending machine, the combination with the outer cylinder and standard plate supporting the same and having a central orifice and the inner cylinder provided with a closed threadedend extending through the orifice and provided with lslots diametrically located, of the ram and rod thereof extending through the reduced end of the inner cylinder and provided with a cross bar extending through the slots, a collar surrounding the inner cylinder and abutting the cross bar and provided with a receiving groove for the opposite' end of the pipe, pins on the cap, a bell crank having a hooked end extending over the pins and spring held, and means for releasing the hooks of the bell-crank.
5. In an elbow bending machine, the combination with the outer cylinder and standard plate supporting the same and having a central orice and the inner cylinder provided with a closed threaded end extending through the orifice and provided with slots diametrically located, of the ram and rod thereof extending through the reduced end of the inner cylinder and provided 'with a cross bar extending through the slots, a collar surrounding the inner cylinder and abutting the cross bar and provided with a receiving groove for one end of the pipe, a cap provided with a receiving groove for the opposite end of the pipe, means for holding the cap in position, an upright secured to the rod of the ram and provided with an adlinstable bolt and a spring-held rod designed to be operated by the bolt to release the cap.
6. In a crimped elbow bending machine, the combination with the outer cylinder and standard plate supporting the same having a central orifice and the inner cylinder provided with a closed threaded end extending through the orifice and provided With slots diametrically located, of the rain and rod thereof extending through the reduced end of the inner cylinder and provided With a cross bar extending through the slots, a colhir surrounding the inner cylinder and abutting the cross bzir and provided with receiving groove for one end of the pipe, L cap provided With a receiving groove for the opposite end of the pipe, means for releasing the carp7 an upright secured to the rod of the ram, an upright secured to the frame provided with an inclined upper end, a slide rod extending through the upright and provided With an inclined end to engage the inclined end of the upright on the frame, stops on the slide rod, an arm at the opposite end of the rod provided with a hooked end, a guideway for the slide rod and a bracket on the cap provided with a pin With which the hooked arm is designed to engage.
