Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CYRUS C. SHIGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reproducers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in repiroducers.

he main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide in a reproducer an improved diaphragm securing means.

Second, to provide in a reproducer an improved fioating weight for the stylus lever.

Third, to provide in a reproducer an improved floating weight mounting.

Further objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Figure I is a vertical longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 1-1 of Fig. II, parts being shown in full lines.

Fig. IV is an enlarged detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. I.

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.

Referring to the drawing, the sound box 1 is chambered at 2 and shouldered at 3 to receive the diaphragm 4, gaskets 5, 5 being arranged above and below the diaphragm.

A clamping disk 6 fits within the soundbox below the diaphragm and is clamped upon its outer gasket 5 by the bar 7 which engages the clamping disk near the center thereof, the bar being secured by the clamping screw 8 to the under side of the sound box arm 9. This provides a simple and convenient means for clamping the diaphragm, the usual threaded diaphragm clamping rings or nuts being eliminated. The disk 6 has openings 10 therein and a central opening 11.

The arm 9 has a supporting post 12, my improved reproducer being especially de signed by me for use in phonographs of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,217,587, Nov. 20, 1917.

The stylus lever 13 is carried by the weight 14 which has a boss 15 on its under side recessed to receive the stylus lever, the walls of the recess providing bearings 16 for the pin point pivots 17 of the lever.

The weight has a longitudinal slot 19 therein extending through its boss. A screw 20 arranged transversely through the slot at the end of the weight provides means for adjusting the bearings to the pivots. The weight is channeled or recessed at 21 to receive the bar 7.

The weight is supported by the suspending pin 22 having a head 23 thereon, con stituting a rest for the bearing projections 24: on the weight, these bearing projections being located on the opposite sides of the hole 25 provided for the pin. The lever is connected to the diaphragm by the link 26.

At its front end the floating weight is provided with an arm 27 formed of wire folded upon itself with one end 28 secured to the weight at one side of the slit and the other end on the opposite side. A loop 29 embraces this arm as is common practice in this art.

With this arrangement of parts the weight is quite freely movable and at the same time maintains its balanced horizontal position. The diaphragm is effectively supported without the aid of threaded clamping rings or the like, and bearings for the stylus lever may be easily adjusted thereto, all of the parts being economical to manufacture and assemble.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a sound box, a diaphragm, a floating weight, a stylus lever mounted on said weight, and a headed suspending pin on said sound box, said Weight being mounted on said pin and provided With spaced bearing projections resting on said head on opposite sides of the pin.

2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a sound box, a diaphragm, a floating Weight, a stylus lever mounted on said Weight, and a support for said Weight, said Weight being provided with spaced bearing projections resting on said 10 support.
