SOPHIA E. DELAVAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 EL DORADO JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EXHAUST-MUFFLER.
Application filed November 19, 1917, Serial No.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, SOPHIA E. DELAVAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhaust-Mufflers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The accompanying drawing is a central longitudinal section of an exhaust mutlier embodying the present improvement.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a shell, preferably of a cylindrical form, provided at its respective ends with the inlet and outlet heads 2 and 3 preferably of the frustoconical form shown, the parts constituting the fixed housing or casing of the mufller.
4 designates a plurality of skeleton frames or spiders, secured transversely in the interior of the shell 1, to provide bearings for the revoluble spiral bladed wheels now to be described.
5 designates a plurality of spiral bladed wheels of any usual and suitable detail construction, arranged transversely within the shell 1, with their carrying shafts or spindles having bearings in the central hubs 6 of the aforesaid skeleton frames or spi ders I. i
In the present invention, a pair of said spiral bladed wheels are preferably employed and arranged in spaced relation to each other, with the intermediate space constituting a damping chamber containing damping means such as hereinafter described. In the preferred association of the pair of spiral bladed wheels above referred to, the inclination or pitch of the blades of one wheel will be in an opposite direction to that of the next adjacent wheel as shown. Such arrangement having been found in practice to aid materially in the required damping effect on the passing gaseous products of combustion as the same forcibly escapes from a gas engine.
8 designates a deflector, preferably of a conical form, and secured centrally to a skeleton frame or spider 1. at the forward side of a spiral bladed wheel. Such deflec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tor is individual to such spiral bladed wheel and is adapted to deflect the passing products of combustion toward the perimeter of such wheel with a view to attain a maximum rotative action of the said wheel.
9 desi nates a damping partition or wall arrange at the midlength of the damping chamber 7 above described, and is preferably of the centrally orificed type shown. The said damping partition 9 in connection with the adjacent deflector 8 is adapted to attain an effective damping or silencing action on the products of combustion, as the same passes from the first spiral bladed wheel to the next and rearward spiral bladed wheel.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina gas engine exhaust mufller, the combination of an inclosing casing having inlet and outlet openings at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels arranged transversely in said casing in spaced relation to provide an intermediate damping chamber, and centrally disposed deflectors individual to said wheels and adapted to deflect passing gaseous products toward the perimeters of said wheels, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gas engine exhaust muifler, the combination of an inclosing casing having inlet and outlet openings at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels ar ranged transversely in said casing in spaced relation to provide an intermediate damping chamber, and centrally disposed deflectors individual to said wheels and adapted to deflect passing gaseous products toward the perimeters of said wheels, and a transverse damping partition arranged intermediate the length of said damping chamber, substantially as set forth.
3. In a gas engine exhaust muflier, the combination of an inclosing casing having inlet and outlet openings at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels arranged transversely in said casing in spaced relation to provide an intermediate damping chamber, and centrally disposed deflectors individual to said wheels and adapted to deflect passing gaseous products toward the perimeters of said wheels, and a transverse damping partition formed with a central opening and arranged intermediate the Ion h of said damping chamber, substantial y as set forth.
4. In a gas engine exhaust mufller, the combination of an inclosing casing having inlet and outlet heads of a frustoconical shape at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels arranged transverse] in said casing in spaced relation to provi e an intermediate damping chamber, and centrallv dis Josed deflectors individual to said wheel s an adapted to deflect the passing gaseous products toward the perimeters of said wheels, substantially as set forth.
5. In a gas engine exhaust mufller, the combination of an inclosing casing havin inlet and outlet heads of a fr'ustoconica shape at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels arranged transversel in said casing in spaced relation to provi e an intermediate damping chamber, and centrally disposed deflectors individual to said wheels and adapted to deflect the passing gaseous products toward the erimeters of said wheels, and a transverse am 'mg artition arranged intermediate the engt said damping chamber, substantially as set forth.
6. In a gas engine exhaust muflier, the combination of an inclosing casing havin inlet and outlet heads of a frustoconica shape at its respective ends, a pair of spiral bladed wheels arranged transverse] in said casing in spaced relation to provide an intermediate dampin chamber, and centrally dis osed deflectors individual to said wheels an adapted to deflect the passing gaseous products toward the perimeters of said wheels, and a transverse damping partition formed with a central opening and arranged intermediate the length of said chamber, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 14th day of November, 1917.
