BOOT AND SHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed August 25, 1919. Serial No. 319,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN BAPTISTE HUR- TEAU, manufacturer, residing at Terrebonne,
county of Terrebonne, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in inner soles for boots and shoes as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially in an improved form of boot having an inner sole of the cushion type. The inner sole is constructed with the boot and constitutes an integral part thereof.
The main object of the invention is to provide a pillow or cushion between the foot and the sole proper of the boot thereby relieving the foot from fatigue by providing a surface that will conform to the shape of the foot and cause comfort and ease to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to eliminate the usual leather inner sole which is hard and causes perspiration of the feet, and to substitute for it an inner sole that will be soft and porous whereby the perspiration will be eliminated.
Another object of the invention is to build a boot with the inner sole sewed to the welt.
Another object is to provide a boot which will be impermeable to moisture and warm and wherein the sole will be particularly flexible.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a finished boot provided with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the top portion of the boot.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through a boot provided with the inner cushion sole and welt.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through the boot without the welt but provided with the inner sole.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the cushion inner sole on line A--A of Fig. 6.
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the inner sole partly broken away to show the felt cushion inside.
Fig. 7 is a bottom view of a modified form of inner sole, broken away to show the inner soft cushion inside.
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 7 on line B---B.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, the boot 1 is illustrated in different stages of manufacture and is provided with the usual outer sole 2, heel 3 and welt 4:. 5 is an inner cushion sole provided above said outer sole 2 and secured to the welt and upper part of the boot preferably by the usual stitches.
The inner cushion sole 5 consists of a cushion 6 of felt or other suitable material preferably adapted to fit inside the boot, and 7 .is a canvas covering larger in size than the cushion 6 and adapted to overlap at the edges as indicated in Fig. 6, of the drawings. An inner lining 8 of canvas of the same size as the cushion is provided to fit against the under side of the cushion, and 9 is a strip or band of cloth preferably of heavy duck arranged against the under side of said lining and secured around the edge of the same by the stitches 10. The overlapping marginal portion of the covering 7 may be cemented or glued over the said band 9, and the loose inner edge portion 10 of said band 9 and the overlapping edge of the covering 7 unite in forming an attaching flange which is stitched to the welt 4 and the upper of the boot as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The outer sole is then secured to the welt 4E, and the ap or hollow portion 11 formed by the diflerent thicknesses. of canvas, leather and welt is filled with a filler 12 composed of cork and cement which is well known in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
In Figs. 7 and 8 is illustrated a modified form of inner cushion sole particularly adaptable to boots and shoes for children and in which the said inner sole is soft and exceedingly flexible.
The construction of this inner sole is approximately similar to the inner sole hereinbefore described except that the lining 8 is wider than the felt pad 6 and is folded over and is cemented to the overlapping edges of the covering 7. 13 is a cardboard layer of the same size as the felt pad provided over the lining 8 to give the inner sole acertain amount of rigidity while the boot is being manufactured. Before the outer sole is secured to the boot, the cardboard 13 is removed.
In this construction, the folded-over por tion or extension 10 of the lining 8 takes the place of the band 9 in the first construction and co-acts in the same manner with the overlapping portion of the covering 7 to form the attaching flange.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An inner sole for a boot or shoe, comprising a cushion pad, a lining disposed against one side of the pad, a covering disposed over the other side of the pad and overlapping the same at its margin, and means securing said lining and the overlapping marginal portion of said covering together; said means uniting with said overlapping portion in forming an attaching flange for securing the inner sole to the welt of the boot or shoe.
2. An inner sole for a boot or shoe, comprising a cushion pad, a lining disposed against one side of the pad, a strip or band secured around the edge of said lining, and a covering disposed over the other side of the pad and overlapping the edges of the pad and band, the overlapping portion of said covering and the adjacent edge portion of said band being fastened together to jointly form an attaching flange for securing the inner sole to the Welt of the boot or shoe.
3. An inner sole for a boot or shoe, comprising a cushion pad, a lining disposed against one side of the pad and provided at its marginal edge with an extension, and a covering disposed over the other side of the pad and having a portion which overlaps said extension and is connected thereto, said extension and connected marginal portion jointly forming an attaching flange for securing the inner sole to the welt of the boot or shoe.
4:. In a boot or shoe, the combination, with the upper and the welt; of an inner sole comprising a pad, a lining disposed against one side'of the pad, a covering disposed over the other side of the pad and overlapping the same at its margin, and means securing said lining and the overlapping marginal portion of said covering together, said means joining with said overlapping portion in forming an attaching flange for securing the inner sole to the welt; an outer sole secured to said welt; and a filler between said inner and outer soles.
