Be it known that I, JAMES H. CARVER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county-of Schenectady,
5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gears, Rolls, and the like, of which the following is a specification. y
rI`lie present invention relates to gears, rolls and the like which are made of a compressibie material, forming a compressible element, held'between metallic holders or shi-endings. The compressible material may be, for example, spinnable textile fibers, rawhide, cloth or' the like.
Arl`he object of my invention is to provide an improved .metallicholder forgears, rolls and the like of this general type which can be readily applied to the compressible element to hold it under compression and which will be very strong and rugged.
For a consideration of what I believev to -be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the accompanying ,description and the claims appended thereto.
In the present instance, I have shown my invention as applied to a gear wheel, the compressible material of which is formed of spinnable textile fiber, as this is a material to which I have found my holder well adapted, but it will be understood, of course, that it is not limited thereto. i y In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a gearing embodying my invention; Fig. 2 isan end elevation partly in section thereof; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing an arrangement for closing the joint between the two parts or members of a holder; Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary sectional views of another form of joint; and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of a portion of a gear wheel.
Referring to the drawing, 10 indicates a compressible element-forming the main portion of the gear wheel rim. It is supported in a holder comprising two cylindrical members 11 and 12 havin annular.fianges 13 and 14 respectively: he cylindrical members 11 and 12 are located inside the compressible' element and have their meeting edges suitably fastened together, and the annular flanges 13 and 14 hold between them the compressible element 10. I preferably employ a type of connection between the 5 5 meeting edges of the members 11 and 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

which draws the flanges 1ntoengagement with the element 10 and whichv is not likely to give or loosen. n
I have shown an arrangement wherein the member 12 is formed with an undercut annular groove 15 into which a wedge-shaped tongue 16 fits. The tongue 16 is bent inwardly a Fig. 3 to permit it to slip over the edge of groove and it is then forced into the groove by a suitable tool as indicated at 17. The inclined surfaces of the tongue and groove serve to draw the two members of thel holder together and bring the flanges 13 and 14 into firm engagement with the velement 10.
In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown a modified form of connection wherein the member 12 is provided with an undercut annular groove 18 bottom which prorim 20 which is rolled down over the tongue 21 after such tongue has been forced into groove 18 and recess 19 as shown in Fig. 5.
VIn a device of this character, the compressible element exerts considerable pressure against the flanges in -an axial direction and it is very important that the holder be vso constructed as to withstand such pressure and resist bending of the flanges. his result is accomplished to a high degree in my improved structure -because of the fact that the flanges 13 and 14 are 4integral parts of the members 1l and 12 and also because of the fact that said flanges are inclined toward each other from their bases radially outward. Since anges 13 and 14 are integral with members 11 and 12 each of the two members of which the holder is formed is an angle iron and hence very strong, and due to the inclined structure of the flanges 13 and 14 they will withstand agreater axial force for 'a given thickness than they would if Furthermore this inclined arhaving a recess'19 at its tween the flanges and the compressible element 10 so that it is strongly anchored against centrifugal force.
To prevent the element 10 romturnin relative to the holder, the inner sides oA flanges 13 and 14 may 'for some purposes be provided with suitable .notches'or grooves as indicated at 22, which bite into of the element 10. .(See Fig. 6.) It will be understood that in the case of agear 13 and 14 firmly little as shown in the sides Wheel the teeth are cut after a blank has been formed in the manner described, such teeth being indicated at 23. In other cases, a blank formed as described may be linis'hed as is necessary or desirable.
With the above described arrangement, the holder comprises p pulling stresses only, there being little if any bending stresses thereon. Furthermore, the arrangement avoids a joint located at or near either of the flanges 13 or 14' and as a result both these flanges are of equal strength to withstand the stresses to which they are subjected. The result is a holder which has a maximun of strength for a given Weight.
