Be it known that I, VVILLIAM W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming-Cups, of
which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to priming cups.
More particularly the invention relates to priming cups for gas and other explosive en ines, comprising a body shell having a fluid receiving chamber and a valve seating opening, constructed to be self-centering when in closed position but loosely mounted within the body shell when in open position.
The objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively side and central elevations of one form of the invention; Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of parts of the same;
Figs. 6 and 7 are respectivelya central elevation and a plan detail view, of a further modification;
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are respectively a central sectional elevation, detail elevation and top plan view of a still further modification; and
Figs. 11, 12 and 13 are respectively a central sectional elevation, top plan view and a section on line 13 13 of Fig. 11,- of a further modification of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the priming cup comprises the body shell 1 having the fluid receiving chamber 2 into which tsle gasolene or other priming fluid is poured. The valve seat 3 is provided at the discharge opening l, the said valve seat 3 in this form of the invention being shown on the upper face of the sides of the discharge opening 4.
The discharge opening 4: is shown closed by the spindle 5 having the lower portion 6 thereof constructed to serve as the closure. As shown in Fig. 2, the spindle 5 is preferably provided with the reduced pilot portion 18 projecting below the valve-seating opening 4.

Such object of the invention is attained in the specific form by the pro- V1S1011 of the secondary inner shell 7 secured by means of the in-turned flange 8 and coacting beading 9 to the main body shell 1. Coacting with the secondary shell 7 is an externally threaded plate 10, having lugs 11, 11, adapted to extend through the opening 1:2, 12 in said secondary shell 7 for retaining said plate 10 in proper relation to the remaining parts. The spindle 5 is threaded externally at 13 to mesh with the internal threads of plate 10.
The secondary shell 7 may be provided with the additional fluid openings 14, 14. for affording sufiicient passage for the flow of fluid from the chamber 2 through the lower portion 15, and thence out of the discharge opening l. The lower portion 15 is threaded at 16 for reception into the opening in the cylinder wall.
The spindle 5 is provided with a suitable manipulating element or portion 17, for opening and closing the valve opening into the engine cylinder, a convenient form of such manipulating means being effected by bending the spindle 5 transversely adjacent its external end, whereby the spindle is precluded from accidentally dropping through the valve opening.

it will be observed that the aforesaid parts of my priming cup are readily manufactured by means of simple stamping machines or a simple lathe, and on the whole presents a relatively simplified manufacturing problem including the question of labor as compared with the ordinary priming cup having an internally threaded, fixed valve closure.
The following additional forms of my invention embody the aforesaid and other advantages.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the spindle is closed by downward movement of the sa e, similar to Figs. 1 and 2, and similarly provided with a reduied pilot portion 18. However, the spindle 5 is in this modification shown in threaded relation with a saddle mounted to normally hang loosely within the body shell 1, as by means of the suspending lugs 24:, 24;, extending through suitable openings in the body shell 1.
In the modifiration shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the spindle 25 is shown in threaded relation with the internally threaded tube 26, said tube QG-having a depending portion 27 provided with the valve closure 28. l hese parts are mounted within the body shell 1 by means of the bar 2- having its ends fixed within openings within the casing 1, and passing through a slot in the tube 26. The valve closure 28 is moved to close the di charge opening l by upward movement of the spindle tube 26 upon clockwise turning of the spindle 25. The relation of the spindle 25, tube 26 and depending portion 2? when in closed position are shown in Fig. 9, whereby the tube 26 and its depending portion 2? are raised. l/Vhen the spindle 25 is turned to open the valve, the spindle and its associated parts are loosely held, laterally and longitudinally, within the main body shell 1, to an extent determined by the clearance between the lower end of the spindle 25 and the end of the slot in the tube '26.
The modifications shown in Figs. 11, 12 and 13 comprise an internally terminated spindle 30, threaded externally, and meshing with the internally threaded saddle 31, and normally loosely mounted within the main shell 1 by means of the suspending flanges The spindle 30 is raised to valve-closing position by rotating the saddle 31 by means of its projecting flanges 32, and similarly lowered to valve-opening position by the opposite rotation of the flanges 32. The plate 33, having the enlarged angular recess 34, precludes the spindle 30 from effective rotation. The head or nut 35 serves to prevent the spindle 30 from separating from its support, in the event that the saddle 31 is turned until the head 35 encounters the saddle 31, but even in such circumstance the saddle prevents the spind e and valve from dropping out 01" the cup proper and the valve proper prevents the spindle from bein lifted out of the cup proper. T he recess 34.: affords passage for the priming fluid and combines with the support 81 to provide the lateral movement of the spindle and attain the aforesaid objects of the previously described modifications of my invention. When the saddle 32 is turned to open the valve 36, the spindle is loosely retained laterally within the cup proper, and also loosely retained longitudinally dependent upon the extent of opening of the valve.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the limited vertical and lateral movement of the spindle and nut is provided under the condition of opening of the valve, by the loose fit of the lugs '11, 11, within the openings 12, 12, in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6. Similar limited vertical and lateral movement of the spindle and nut is provided for by the loose fit of the lugs 2 1, 2%, within the openings in the shell 1. Similarly, in the form shown in Fig. 11, limited verti al and lateral movement of the stem and the saddle 81 threaded therewith is provided by the clearance between the edges of the recess 34- and the faces of the reduced portion of the spindle 30 and the suspending flanges 32 above the upper edge of the shell afforded when the valve is in open position.
It will be further noted that the lateral movability of the spindle and valve closure arrangement of my invention and the selfcentering characteristics under closed conditions afford the further advantage of selfadjustment upon wear of the parts. The self-centering cl'iaracteristics of the invention are also advantageous in obviating the necessity of absolute perfect fitting in construction or assembly, or in the event of bending or otherwise mis-shaping the parts incident to use.
.l hereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body shell constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber, said body shell being constructed at its top to provide a fluid receiving opening, said body shell being further constructed at its bottom to provide a cooperating discharge opening, two substantially accurately inter-threaded members, means for loosely retaining the said threaded members within said body shell, said retaining means being open to provide for fluid passage therethrough and means on one of said members forming a closure for said discharge opening.

A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body shell constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber, said body shell beingconstructed at its top to provide a fluid receiving opening, and said body shell being constructed at its bottom to provide a coiiperating discharge passage, a valve seat cooperating with said discharge passage, an externally threaded member, an
internally threaded member in substantially accurate threaded relation with said externally threaded member, means for loosely retaining one of said threaded members Within said body shell, said retaining means being constructed to provide for fluid passage therethrough, and a closure for said valve-seat disposed on one of said threaded members.

A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body shell constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber, said body shell being constructed at its top to provide a fluid receiving opening, said body shell being constructed at its lower portion to provide a fluid discharging passage, a valve seat cooperating with said fluid discharging passage, a threaded member, a valve closure cooperating with said valve seat disposed on said threaded member, a second threaded member in substantially accurate threaded relation with said first named threaded member and means for loosely retaining the said threaded members within said body shell, said retaining means being constructed to permit a limited radial movement relative to said body shell and provided with an opening for the passage of fluid therethrough.

In a priming cup for gas engines, the combination of a cup shell, constructed interiorly to provide an inner fluid receiving chamber, said cup shell being constructed at its top to provide a fluid receiving inlet, said cup shell being further constructed at its bottom to provide a cooperating fluid discharge passage, a self-centering valve cooperating with said discharge passage and valve actuating mechanism comprising two substantially accurately co-threaded members, means for actuating one of said threaded members and means for loosely retaining the other of said threaded members within said cup, said retaining means being provided with an opening for the passage of fluid therethrough, said retaining means being constructed to provide for compensating lateral movement relative to said cup shell.

In a priming cup for gas engines, the combination of a body part constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber, said body part being constructed at its upper portion to provide a fluid receiving opening, said body part being further constructed at its lower portion to provide a cooperating fluid discharge opening, a valve seat disposed at said discharge opening, a self-centering valve member disposed within said body part, said valve member comprising a. closure for said valve-seating opening and including a reduced pilot portion adapted to project through said discharge opening.

A priming cup for gas engines comprising a body shell having a fluid receiving chamber and a valve seating opening with a passage therebetween, an internally threaded member, a secondary inner shell loosely retaining the said member within said body shell, means for securing said secondary inner shell to said body shell, an externally threaded spindle cooperating with said internally threaded member, the lower part of said spindle forming the valve closure for said valve-seating opening when moved into engagement with the upper side thereof, said internally threaded member and said externally threaded spindle having a lateral movement relative to said body shell to an extent suflicient to efi'ect perfect alinement of said valve closure with said valve-seating opening.
' 7 A priming cup for a gas engine comprising a body shell, having a fluid receiving chamber and a valve-seating opening with a passage therebetween, a secondary shell secured within said body shell, an internally threaded member loosely mounted on said secondary shell, an externally threaded spindle cooperating with said internally threaded member, the lower part of said spindle forming a valve closure when moved into engagement with said valve seating opening, said internally threaded member and said externally threaded spindle having a lateral movement relative to said body shell to an extent suiiicient to effect alinement of the valve closure with said valve-seating opening, said spindle further having a reduced pilot portion disposed below said valve closure portion and projecting through said valveseating opening when in closed posi tion.

A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body member having a fluid 16- 105 ceiving chamber and a valve-seating opening with a passage therebetween, said body member being further provided with one or more openings, an internally threaded member, one or more lugs on said member and 110 projecting into said one or more openings for retaining said threaded member within said body member, an externally threaded spindle cooperating with said internally threaded member, the lower part of said 115 spindle forming a valve closure when moved downwardly into engagement with the side of said valve-seating opening, said internally threaded member and said externally threaded spindle having a lateral movement 120 relative to said body member suflicient to effect perfect alinement of said valve closure part with said valve-seating opening.

A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body shell having a fluid receiv- 125 ing chamber, and a valve-seating opening with a passage therebetween, said body shell further having one or more openings. an internally threaded member. lugs on said member projecting into said one or more 189 openings for retaining said. member within said body shell, an externally threaded spindle cooperating with said internally threaded member, the lower part of said spindle forming a valve closure when'moved into engagement with a side of said valveseating opening, said internally threaded member and said externally threaded spindle having a lateral movement relative to said body shell sufficient to effect perfect alinement of said valve closure part with said valve-seating opening, said spindle having further a reduced pilot portion disposed below said valve closure part and projecting through said valve seating opening when said spindle is in closed position.
10. A priming cup for gas engines, comprising a body shell formed to provide a fluid receiving chamber and having an up per receiving opening and a lower valveseating opening, two threadedly connected members within said body shell, means for loosely retaining said members, said retaining means being open to provide for fluid passage and means on one of said members forming a closure for said valve-seating opening, said one member further being provided with a reduced pilot portion projecting below said valve-seating opening.

A body shell constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber and at its upper portion to provide a cooperating fluid inlet and at its lower portion to provide a cooperating fluid discharge, a closure for said discharge, a stem controlling said closure, said stem having a portion provided with screw-threading, and means for mounting said stem within said body shell to provide limited lateral movement of said stem, said means including an element having a screw-threaded portion in substantially accurate screw-threaded relation with the screw-threading of said stein portion.

A body shell constructed interiorly to provide a fluid receiving chamber and at its upper portion to provide a cooperating fluid inlet and at its lower portion to provide a cooperating fluid discharge, a closure for said discharge, a stem controlling said closure, said stem having a portion pro vided with exterior screw-threading, an element provided with interior screw-threading in substantially accurate threaded relation with the screw-threading of said stem and means for mounting said element within said body shell to provide limited lateral movement of said element.
13. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body having an outlet at its lower end, a valve stem extending axially through said body, a valve for said outlet controlled by said stem, said stem having a threaded section, and a nut receiving said threaded section and confined within said body against rotation but with limited freedom of lateral movement whereby to permit said stem and valve to cooperate to accurately close said outlet.
14. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body having an outlet at its lower end, valve stem extending axially through said cup body, a valve cooperating with said stem to control said outlet, said stem having a threaded section, a nut member receiving said threaded section, and means for locking said nut member against rotation but permitting limited lateral and vertical movement thereof during turning of the stem whereby said stem and valve may cooperate to accurately fit and close said outlet.
15. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body having an outlet at its lower end, a valve stem extending axially through said cup body, a valve cooperating with said stem to control said outlet, said stem having a threaded section, a nut member receiving said threaded section, and abutments on said cup body for locking said nut member against rotation and against all but limited vertical and lateral movement whereby when said stem is turned it may move laterally to insure accurate alinement of the valve with said outlet.
16. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body having an outlet at its lower end, a valve for controlling said outlet, a stem for said valve extending up wardly through said cup body and having a threaded section, a nut member within said cup body receiving said stem, and means for preventing extended rotation of the nut member, there being just suflicient clearance between said nut member and the walls of said cup body to permit only limited freedom of movement of said nut member when said stem is turned whereby said stem is free to aline itself to assure accurate cooperation of said valve with said outlet, the nut member being cut away to permit the passage of priming fluid.
17. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body comprising a cupshaped top section, a polygonal intermediate section of reduced width and a threaded end for engaging in a threaded opening, the lower wall of said end having an outlet passageway therethrough, a valve for said outlet passageway, a supporting stem for said valve extending axially through said cup structure sections, the intermediate part of said stem being threaded, and a nut member within said cup structure receiving said threaded stem, said cup structure cooper.- ating with said nut member to prevent extended rotation of said nut member, there being suflicient clearance between said nut member and cup structure walls to permit limited lateral and vertical movement of the nut member when the stem is turned whereby said stem is sufiiciently free to aline itself and cause accurate cooperation of such valve with said outlet.
18. In a priming cup structure, the combination of a cup body comprising a top section, a polygonal intermediate section, and a threaded end, the lower wall of said end having an outlet passageway, a valve for controlling said passageway, a stem for said valve extending upwardly through said cup body and having a threaded section, a nut member within said cup body receiving said threaded stem, said cup structure cooperating with said nut member to prevent extended rotation of said nut member, there being just sufiicient clearance between said nut member and cup body sides to permit limited lateral movement of said nut memher when the stem is turned, and abutments on said cup body for allowing limited vertical movement of the nut member, such limited movements of the nut member permitting said stem to automatically aline itself when turned and to insure accurate cooperation of said valve in said outlet.
19. In a priming cup structure, the com bination of a cup body comprising a cupshaped top section, a polygonal intermediate section of reduced width and a threaded end for engaging in a threaded opening, the lower wall of said end having an outlet passageway therethrough, a valve for said outlet passageway, a supporting stem for said valve extending axially through said cup structure sections, the intermediate part of said stem being threaded, and a nut member within said cup structure receiving said threaded stem; said cup structure cooperating with said nut member to prevent extended rotation of said nut member, there being clearance between said nut member and cup structure walls for the flow of fluid.
in a priming cup, the combination of a body structure formed to provide a fluid receiving chamber having an open end' and valve seating discharge opening, a valve closure for said opening, means for actuating said valve closure and means permitting a vertical and lateral self-centering adjustment of said valve closure in relation to said valve seating opening when the said valve closure is actuated to the closed position.
21. In a priming cup, the combination of a body structure comprised of two shells formed to provide a fluid receiving chamher having an open end and a valve seating discharge opening, a valve for said dis charge opening comprising an externally threaded actuating stem extending axially through said body structure, a nut member cooperating with said stem, said nut memher being loosely retained between sections of the two said shells thereby providing for the limited movement in all directions and means on one of said shells cooperating with means on said nut member to prevent the extended rotation thereof.
22. In a priming cup, the combination of a body comprised of two interlocking shells formed to provide a fluid receiving chamber having an open end and a valve seating discharge opening, one of said shells being externally formed to provide a wrench seating section and a threaded section, a valve for said discharge opening comprising an externally threaded actuating stem extending axially through said body structure, a nut member cooperating with said stem, said nut member being loosely retained between sections of the two said shells thereby providing for its limited movement in all directions and means on one of said shells cooperating with means on said nut member to prevent the extended rotation thereof.
28. In a priming cup, the combination of a body structure formed to provide a fluid receiving chamber having an open end and a valve seating discharge opening, a valve closure for said opening, means for actuating said valve closure and means permitting a lateral self-centering adjustment of said valve closure in relation to said valve seating opening when actuated to the closed position.
