ELECTRICAL To all whom if may concern Be it known that l, iViLLIsM A. Hemer, a citizen of the United States, and resident of .zlcrantons in the 'county of Laclawsnns and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Electrical Appliances, of which 'the followin p is a specilication.
The present invention relates in general to electrical appliances and particularly to an adapter for that class of electrical fittings known to the trade as condulets, unilets, taplets, etc.7 such fittings being commonly used in connection with instal ,conduit sys;- tenis of electric Wiring, for the purpose oif providing pull boxes.7 elbows, Ts, and outlets for the passage through end emergence of electrical wires carried by the conduit systems.
The prirnargr object of the invention is to provide an adapter which may be associated withiany of the` fittings above identified in a manner whereby different sized switches7 lamp sockets and the like may heepplied to the fittings.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap construction oi: adapter as Well as one which may he applied to theitting in a convenient manner.
Further objects will appear upon riefen ence to the accompanying drawing and the following detailed description, the points of novelty being particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
In said drawing:-

Referring to the drawings in detail parsible a pair of lugs 2 project inwardly of the 85 opening having screw-threo led holes which are made to receive screws in securing the or other device over the opening. It is proposed by the present invention to employ this plate attaching Ineens as a medium for securing en adapter plate such as 3 over the opening. This adapter plate 3 is con# structed of a dimension 'to ovcrlie the opening in the fece of fitting, but with outwardly projecting sides which are provided with recessed portions which are made to receive the ends of small bolts 5, the heads or which being seated in openings in the porcelain `oase of the appliance which is attached to the fitting, in the present instance, 10e
shown as e. ten ampere snap switch. To secursi)v7 X 'the switc to the plete 3, nuts 6 are employed under the plate 3 for engaging the screw-threaded ends of the bolts 5, thus lx enabling the base of the switch to he se. ros
curely clamped 'to the plate. That part of the plate 3 `which oveilies the opening in Athe hase of the hitting is also provided with an elong-.ited opening 7 whichL enables the wires to he passed from .the fitting and at- 11o tached to the binding posts orn the appliance:
1 1 u n n lt is to oe noted that tne openings 4e in the the attaching .lugs used in connection 65 sceive the conduit, its 'face so ions of the plate 3 enable the adapter anmodate appliances even though the mugs in the porcelain base thereof which ceive the bolts 5 should not contorni in oaced relation in every switch.
`With reference to Fig. 4, the construction 1 described with reference to Figs. l to 3, elusive, is identical, this figure merely .owing a different type of fitting,-such fitting being of what is known in the trade as an elbow type. y
Referring now to Figs. 5 and (3, this forni of the invention is substantially the same as that illustrated in the previously described figures with the exception that an annular ring 8 is employed for supporting the switch above the adapter plate This ring conforms in dimensions to the porcelain base of the switch and is provided with an ana nular recessed portion 9 for receiving the base of the switch.
Vl'ith reference to that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the adapter plate is shown as a ring piece 10 yrendering it applicable for attaching Siae five ampere switches and other small variety of appliances. This form also illustrates a somewhat different means for attaohing the appliance to' the adapter plate. However, it is secured to the opening in the base of the fitting in the same manner as in the figures above referred to. Referring specifically to the ring piece, this is constructed of any suitable material having a base or flange with openings on opposite sides thereof which openings are made to receive small bolts or screws 11 which pass through the openings and engage the slots l in the adapter plate. Instead of employing-nuts 6 as in the other form a pair of ears or lugs 12 are employed, these lugs or ears having a screw-threaded opening which is made to receive the screw-threaded end of the bolts or screws l1 and with upturned ends 13 which engage the edges of the adapter plate and the ring piece 10, thus enabling the ring piece to be securely fixed to the adapter plate. The ring piece 10 is also constructed with an inner raised portion 14 providing a supporting base for the switch or appliance.v The inner circumference of the raised portion 1-*1 is open and registers with the opening 7 in the adapter plate 3, thus enabling the wires' to be projected from the fitting to the binding post of the appliance. The means for securing the appliance to the supporting base ot' the ring piece 1() comprises inwardly projecting portions 15 having slotted openings 16 which are made to receive small bolts i? which are carried by the appliance, nuts 18 being used to engage the screw-threaded ends of the bolts thus clamping Vthe appliance secureiy 'to its supporting base.
tion of only five and ten ampere sized switches, it is of course understood, that even a` larger variety of switches and appliances may be attached to the adapter plates as the slotted openings malte ample. provilsion for receiving the securing bolts of the appliance regardless of their spaced relation.
I claim l. In a conduit fitting, the combination of' an adapter for accommodating the fitting to electrical appliances having different size base dimensions, said adapter comprising a plate adapted to engage the fitting, an opening in the plate registering with the opening in the fitting, an extension on cach side of the plateprojecting beyond the sides of the fitting, and an elongated opening` in each extension adapted to receive the base securing` bolts of the electrical appliance.
2. ln a conduit fitting, the combination of an adapter for accommodating the fitting to electrical appliances having different sized base dimensions, said adapter comprising a plate adapted to engage the fitting, an opening in the plate registering with the opening in the fitting, an extension on each side of the plate projecting beyond the sides ot the fitting, and elongated means on said plate for attaching the electrical appliance.
3. ln a conduit fitting, the combination of an adapter for accommodating the fitting to electrical appliances having different size base dimensions, said adapter comprisingr a plate adapted to engage the fi? ing, an open-` ing in the plate registering with the opening in the fitting, an extension on each side of the plate projecting beyond the sides of the fitting, and means on said plate for attaching the electrical appliance.
et. In a conduit fitting, the combination of an adapter for accommodating the fitting to electrical appliances having different sized base dimensions, said` adapter comprising a plate adapted to engage the fitting, an opening in the plate registering with the opening in the fitting, an extension on each Side of the plate projecting beyond the sides .ot the fitting, and elongated openings on said extensions for attaching the electrical appliance.
The foregoing specification signed at Scranton, Penna., this lst day of March, 191,8.
