Description

'set, England, subject of the King of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYNDALL FORSE, OF YEOVIL, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TO SIDNEY THEODORE THRING AND ONE-THIRD TO REGINALD JOHN LUFFMAN, 0F
YEOVIL, ENGLAND.
MANUFACTURE OI? MOCHA LEATHER.
No Drawing.
T 0 all whom 'itmag concern:
Be it known that I, LYNDALL Fonsn, of Silchester, Grove avenue. Yeovil, Somer- Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to the Manufacture of Mocha Leather, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of Mocha leather. The object of this invention is to provide an improved method of manufacture. v
In the manufacture of Mocha leather as hitherto carried out the grain of the leather is removed by placing .the skins in a vat or pit where they are allowed to soak and when the surface has been destroyed the skins are placed on a beam and the grain removed by a beam knife. According to this invention each skin is placed on a table or board and the granular surface destroyed by the application of any suitable agent which may be washed off when the grain has been affected to a sufiicient eX- tent, as is known to a trained and expert operator by the appearance of the skin, supplemented, if necessary, by an actual test on a small portion of the skin. For the purpose of carrying out this invention, an agent composed of caustic soda 12%, caustic potash 124 70 and water 75% may be employed, but I do not bind myselfto the use of this agent. Any agent which will attack the skin has, to a certain extent, a similar action, but soinereagents take an inconveniently long time to produce the required degree of disintegration of the granular surface, while the action of others is not thoroughly under control, so that the de-' tails of the process have to be varied according to the kind of skin under treatment,
the nature of the reagent employed and the use the finished product is intended for, for instance, as to whether the prepared skin is to be dyed, or not. The agent may Specification of Letters Patent.

be applied by a brush, sponge, spray or otherwise.
When the skin has been dried the surface is lgreund off by an emery or other grinding w ee In accordance with this method of manufacture only one surface of the skin is attacked, resulting in a saving in the texture and a plumper skin. The time and cost of manufacture is considerably reduced. and the loss dueto skins being damaged in the pit process is avoided.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let-- tersPatent is 1.. The method of manufacture of Mocha leather characterized by applying on one side only of a skin a solution of an agent adapted toattack the skin, thereupon completelfy re moving the whole granular surface 0 the skin, thereby producinga leather which is soft and velvety throughout.
