To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSIAH W. STOKE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Peniel, in the county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holding Implements, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for holding implements while being sharpened and particularly to a stand or support for hoes, said device having for its object the provision of novel means whereby the back of a hoe may be engaged and supported while the cutting-edge of the hoe is being filed or otherwise sharpened.

A further object of this invention is to provide means for holding the hoe so that it will be comparatively rigidly held in order that pressure applied to the sharpening tool will not tilt or otherwise displace or dislodge the hoe holding mechanism.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detaiL'refei'ence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of a holding device embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 illustrates an edge elevation; and

Fig. 8 illustrates a side elevation.

In these drawings 5 denotes a base, 6 and 7 standards or posts preferably formed integral with the plate 8, which plate is secured to the base by fastenings 9 such as rivets.

The posts or uprights 6 and 7 are each given a slight twist at 9 and 10 respectively, so that their upper edges lie diagonally with respect to the width of the base and the upper end of each arm or post is provided with a slot 11 and 12 respectively of such length as to constitute seats for the back of the hoe, which hoe may be applied to the seats in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, with its cutting edge standing upwardly and exposed to the action of the operator who may want to apply a sharpening instrument to it and the operator may by pressure on the handle of the hoe so anchor the base as to prevent oscillation or movement of the arms.

A device of this character will, as is seen, prove comparatively inexpensive whereas being made of metal will be strong and durable.

I claim- In a tool holding device, a base, a plate secured to the said base, posts constituting extensions of the said plate, said posts being twisted and having their'sides at their upper ends extending diagonally to the width of the base, the said posts having their upper ends slotted to form seats for the back of a hoe, said posts being bent or curved at such an angle as to grip firmly the hoe in said slots.
