Be it known that 1, JAMES W. SLOAN, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of the city'of Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanks and Methods for Manufacture of Bailer-Bottoms; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification Bailer bottoms as heretofore constructed have usually been forged, whichoperation is quite expensive, making the bottoms too costly. It is an object of this invention to provide a method of making bailer bottoms by first forming a blank in the form of an integral casting which is then machined down to the proper proportion, after which the valve member or plunger is cutfrom its seat member, therebyproviding a bailer bottom which is inexpensive in construction and which is quickly made.
It is further an object of this invention to provide a reinforced. plunger or valve member which when out from its seat is retained in place and can never be lost from the rest of the bottom and to so construct the same that it automatically opens and closes and is' limited in its opening by the construction thereof. I
The invention (in-a. preferred. form) is illustrated in the drawingsland hereinafter more fully described.

Figure '1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a vertical bore or shaft in which abailing machine embodying my invention has been inserted.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bailmechanism fully lowered and valve opened with the column of liquid to be bailed above the bailer bottom.
Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a tong attached to the valve member for the purpose of elevating the entire mechanism out of the bore should the ordinary bail attached to the'tube be broken. 1

As shown on the drawings:
1, indicates the earth material, 2, indicates the bore therein, 3, indicates any suitable form of hoist mechanism and 4, the hoist cable. Inserted in the bore 2, is the bailing machine, which comprises a tube 5, of any suitable construction having secured thereon a bail 6, to which is secured one end of the cable 4.
The bailer bottom is made in an integral casting after which it is machined down to the proper dimensions and the plunger member is then cut from the bottom. Said device comprises, as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, a bailer bottom or cylindrical member 7 machined down to provide an annular rib 8 on which the tube 5 rests and which limits the telescoping of the bottom into the tube. The bottom 7, is rigidly secured to'the lower end of the tube by means of rivets 9, or
other suitable means. After the parts are machined down to the proper size the plunger member is cut from the bottom 7, forming a complemental valve seat 10. Said plunger comprises a central conically shaped valve member 11, having an upwardly directed stem 12, integral therewith which is provided with a plurality of grooves, teeth or other suitable means by means of which the same can be readily grasped by a tong 17 or combination socket.
l'ntegrally connected with the under side of the valve closure 11, is a shank or stem 12. which as shown is provided at its lower end with a head 16, having shoulders 13, adapted to engage under the bailer bottom to limit the unseating of the valve or plunger. Also integral with said valve 11, and with the shank 12, are ribs 14, and the lower end of the closure is provided with an aperture 15, by means of whicha tube or other suitable means may be attachedwhen desired. a v
The operation is as follows':
The'valve member 11 as a whole is made of a single casting as shown in Fig. 4, after which the same is machined down to the proper proportion providing the rib 8, for the purpose hereinbefore specified. After the parts are machined down to the proper serted into the bore as shown in Fig. 1, 2
or 3 in a well known manner by the use of any suitable hoisting mechanism and by its own weight and avity drops to the bottom of the bore. amen the ressure of the column of water as shown in fiig. 2 becomes sufficiently great, the valve member 11, is elevated from its seat, permitting the water to flow into the tube through the open valve until the tube drops to its lowest limit ofmovement, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position the opening of the valve member is limited by means of the head 16, on the lower end of the plunger, the bottom resting on the shoulders 13. As the bailer is elevated from the bore to clear the water or other material therefrom the valve automatically seatsby the pressure of the water and by its own gravity, thereby trapping the water within the tube permitting the same to be elevated with the tube out of the bore and to be dumped therefrom. If it is desired to leave a supply of water in the bore to facilitate the boring operation, or if it is desired to lower water into the bore a suitable device may be attached to the plunger for this purpose by means of the aperture 15. This may also be accomplished by lowering the tube 5, filled with water, into the bore and then inserting the tongs 17 and removing the tube by the engagement of the tongs with the stem 12. I 7
By referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted, that should the bailer or other parts of the tube mechanism become broken the same may be elevated from the bore by means of suitable tongs 17, which are dropped into the tube and grapple the stem 12, engaging the teeth thereon and by means of which the mechanism as a whole may be removed from the bore- I From the construction disclosed, it will be noted that the device is very cheap to con struct and is made from an integral casting and that it is not necessary to use any complicated or expensive machine in the makin of the same.
any details of construction may be varied and numerous changes may be made without departing from the principles of this invention and I therefore do not desire to limit the application for patent otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A blank for constructing a device of the class described comprising a cylindrical shell closed at one end, a boss projecting centrally from the outer face, of said end and a stem projecting centrally from the inner face of said end narrow at thebas and broadening toward its end.
