Be it known that I, THERON J. Kui-zsxr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, county of Yuba, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magneto-Goren nors, of which the following is a specification.

The device comprisesacylindrical shell 1Q formed at one end with an inwardl extending flange 11 which is provided wit a series of uniformly spaced apertures'12. A disk or flange 13 is adapted to be arranged in substantially the same plane with the flange 1] and the outside diameter of said flange 13 is smaller than the inside diameter of flange 11 whereby flange 13 may be arranged inside of flange 11. Near its periphsectional view of cry this flange 13 is formed with a series of uniformly spaced apertures 14 similar to the apertures 12. and a coil sprin 15 is adapted to have its coils interlaced t rough the said apertures 12 and 14 thereby con-. necting the two flanges 11 and 13. The flange 13 is formed with an axially extending hub 16 which is exteriorl' threaded and may be slitted as at -17 so t at the nut 18 when screwed upon the same will clamp the said hub 16 onto a driving shaft 19 which may be rotatedfrom the crank shaft of the engine. Other suitable means might be used to connect the flange 13 so that it is rotated by the engine crank shaft. It will thus be apparent that the flanges 11 and 13 with the interlaced spring 15 form a universal coupling which permits a sli ht disalinement of the axis of the hub 16 with respect to the axis of the casing 10.
At the end of the casing 10 opposite the universal coupling an impulse starter is arranged and between these two parts and in the interior of the casing an automatic spark advancing mechanism is housed. The casing 10 at the end having the flange 11 but arranged slightly inward from the same has a radially extendin flange 20 which is formed with a centrally located bore 21. At. its opposite end the said casing is formed with a counter-bore 22 in which is fitted the plate 23 which is formed with a centrally arranged stub shaft 24 extending toward the universal coupling. This stub shaft or stud is formed with the reduced ortion 25 which is adapted to be seated in t ie bore 21 and with the threaded portion 26 which is adapted to take the nut 27 so that the inner periphery of the flange 20 is loosely arranged between the said nut and the shouldr'portion 28 of the stub shaft 24. Thus the plate 23 is securely held against longitudinal movement with respect to the casing 10 but may rotate slightly relatively to the same. Between the spring and the adjacent faces of the centrifugal levers a disk 42 may be-arranged so as to prevent interference of the spring and the levers. The parts just described constitute the spark advancing'mechanism and its operation will .be explained hereinafter.
As previously stated .the impulse starter is arranged at the end of the casing opposite the universal coupling and consists of parts which are adapted to coiiperate with the spring 34 carried by the plate 33. The cover 43 isarranged at the end ofv the casing face flush with the outer surface of the casing 10, and is provided with a centrally arranged bore 44 adapted to receive the armature shaft 45 of the magneto. In' its interior the cover 43 is formed with an axially projecting pin 46 which is adapted to seat in the space between the free end of the coil spring 34 and the projection 35. It is also formed with an axially extending hub portion or sleeve 47 arranged around the armature shaft, and with two diametrically opposite apertures 48 extending through its shell. Two oppositely arranged latches are 10 with its outer surin the space between the mounted in the interior of the cover and each has an end 49 which is adapted to project a slight distance through one of the apertures 48 and outside of thevcover so that it'may be caught by the sto 50 carried by the stationary bracket 51. l hese latches are formed with an enlarged central openin 52 which is adapted to take over the hu 47 and permit a sliding movement of the with the cams 32. As the stem portion of one of the latches is arranged behind the weighted portion 55 of the other, this latter weighted portion is formed with a slot 59 through which the pin 58 on the stem portion of the other latch projects. The impulse starter is assembled with the pin'46 in its position between the free end of spring134 and the projection 35 and with the pins 58 on the latches at substantially 45 degrees with respect to the cams 32.
The magneto connection is adapted to be connectedwith: the armature shaft of the magneto so that the impulse starter when the latch is free from the stop 50 will accelcrate the armature throu h the strongest portion of the magnetic field of the ma neto, thus giving the most efiicienl spark. I t will be noted that there is nomanually operated breaker box or distribute-r to be retarded when starting the engine and consequently the spark may occur at the most elliclent point in the rotation of the armature. It Is also intended that the magneto connection shall be mounted on the armature shaft so that the spark, when the impulse starter is operative, cannot occur before the engine has reached dead center position.
In the operation of the device the rotation of the shaft '19 through the universal coupling will cause the'rotation of the casing 10. It will be noted that the coupling will take care of any disalinement between the shaft 19 and the armature shaft thus permitting the armature shaft to be driven without any binding even if the two shafts are not in line. The rotation of the casing 10 by means of the intermeshing teeth on the centrifugal levers will rotate the plate 23. The direction of rotation of the device is indicated by the arrows in Fi s. 1, 2 and 3 and it will be noted that this direction is such that it stem. portion provided with an axially extending pin 58 "which is adapted to cooperate of a spring 53 which is tends to turn the centrifhgal levers so that .to resist the outward movement of arms 40 are designed so that said arms will not move outward to advance tlie'spal'k of the engine until after the impulse starter has becomein operative. The rotation of casing 10 is thus transmitted to the stud 2-]: which in turn through the projection 35 and circularly arranged coil spring 34 acts on the pin 46 of thecover to turn the latter. As this cover turns one of the ends 49 on the. latch will be caught by the stop 50 thus holding the cover against rotation. While the cover is thus held the plate 23 will continue to rotate thus compressing the spring '34. When the said plate has rotated substantially 45 degrees relative to the cover 43 the pins 58 will come into operative position with respect to the cams 32 and the said cams will push the pins inward thereby moving the end 49 of the latch free from the stop 50. The spring 3-1 will thus be'liberated and its energy will accelerate the plate 43 so that the armature of the magneto will he turned very rapidlythrough the strongest part of the magnetic field thus producing a very efficient spark. As the engine picks up speed the centrifugal force developed by the weights 55 on the ends of the latches will move the latches transversely across the axis of'rotation thus withdrawing the ends 49 within the cover 43 and out of position where they might be caught by the stop 50. It is obvious that the starter may be designed to become inoperative at any desired speed. As previously stated the relation between the impulse starter and the automatic spark advancing device is such that the spark aflvancing device does not become operative until the impulse starter has become inoperative. Thus when the engine has-reached a speed suilicient to render the impulse starter inoperative the centrifugal force developed in the arms 40 of the spark advancin P device will be sufficient to overcome the thrces resisting outward movement of said arms and they will move out an amount in proiortion' to the rotative speed of the device. his outward movement will cause the stud 2-1 to be angularly advanced with respect to the casing 10 thus through the. connected parts advancing the armature shaft. so that the spark in the enginovvill occur earlier. It will thus be apparent that a universal coupling spark advancing mechanism and impulse starter are combined in a unitary structure which may be attached to any standard magneto. Furthermore the impulse starter and spark advancing mechanism operate independently of each other, that is the acceleration of the armature shaft due to the impulse starter does not-in any way affect the spark advancing mechanism. This is due to the fact that the impulse 'starter is arranged between the magneto and the spark advancing mechanism.
Having thus described the invention what is claimedand desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A unitary magneto drivingconnection comprising in combination a universal coupling adapted to be attached to a driving means, a continuously acting automatic spark advancing mechanism responsive tothe speed of the driving means and a device for intermittently retarding and accelerating the angular velocity of the armature shaft.
A unitary magneto driving connection comprising in combination a. universal cou-, pling at one end of the connection adapted to be attached to a driving means, a device for intermittently retarding and accelerating the angular velocity of the armature shaft at the other end, and a speed responsive continuously acting spark advancing mechanism interposed between the coupling and device.
3. In a magneto driving connection adapt ed to be interposed between a driving member and the magneto armature shaft, an impulse startcr adapted to become inoperative above a predetern'iincd angular velocity and sparkadvancing mechanism responsive to the speed of said driving member.
4. In a magneto driving connection adapted to be interposed between a driving member and the ma neto armature shaft, spark advancing metihanism res )onsive to the speed of said driving mem r, and an impulse starter adapted to become inoperative above a predetermined angular velocity interposed between said mechanism and the armature shaft of the magneto.
5. In a magneto driving connection adapted to be interposed between a drivingmemher and the ma meto armature shaft, an impulse starter adapted to become inoperative above a predetermined angular velocity and a speed responsive spark advancing mechanism which is operative only above said velocity.
