HYDROCARBON-MOTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD D. CHURCH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, Wayne county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Motors, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention relates to hydrocarbon motors and particularly to the governor, the pump, and the throttle and oil valve control.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a motor with governor controlled throttle and oil valves of a particularly simple and effective construction.
Another object is to provide a novel combination of governor and pump for a hydro carbon motor, together with operating means and rconnections of novel construction.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation and part section of a hydrocarbon motor embodying the invention; and

, eferring to the drawings, 10 represents the base or crank case of a hydrocarbon motor,'upon which the cylinders 11 are suitably mounted. In addition to the usual means for lubricating the motor, an auxiliary oiling device is herein provided for supplying oil to the cylinder walls when the motor is started or is operating lunder full load. This means comprises a supply pipe 12 which may lead from any suitable pump (not shown) operated by the motor, valve 13, pipe 14, manifold l5 and branch pipes 16,
the latter leading directly to the cylinder walls as shown in Fig. 1. The valve 13 is a progressively opening one and is yieldingly maintained in closed position by a spring 17 and is operated from the outside of the casing by the valve stem or rod 18. Thus the valve 13 is normally in closed position and itis open for supplying oil tothe walls of the cylinders 11 by longitudinally moving the valve stem or rod 18.
yThe intake manifold 19 of the motor is supplied by a carbureter 20, of `any suitable form, and the quantity of the mixture is controlled as it passes to the intake manifold by throttles 21 and 22 arranged in tandem. by a rod 23 and the throttle 22 is governor controlled as will hereafter appear. The throttle 22 has an arm 24 which is connected to a bell crank lever 25 by a rod 26. The bell crank 25 controls the position of the throttle 22 and its own position is determined by a rod 27 which is yieldingly pressed toward the left in Fig. 1 by a coil spring 28' adjustable as by the nut 29. The rod 27 extends through the nut 29 and is preferably in axial alinement with the rod 18 of the oil valve 13 whereby the position of the rod 27 also determines the position of the valve 13. Both the rod 27 and the valve stem 18 are spring pressed toward the left in Fig. 1 so that the tendency of these springs in both cases is to close their respective valves. An adjusting nut 30 on the end of the rod 27 determines the relative positions of the rods 27 and 18. a
There is a casing 31, preferably made in suitable sections for convenience in assembling, which surrounds the various connections for operatingy the throttle valve 22, thus supporting and housing said connections and preventing tamperingwith their adjustments. Arranged forwardly of the casing 31 is a water pump 32, the impeller 33 of which is driven by a shaft 34 which is suitably packed as at .35 and 36 to insure against leakage. The shaft 34 is supported in a plain bearing 37 and an annular ball bearing 38, the latter being arranged ina forward extension 32 of the casing of the pump 32. Said casing is formed withk a flange 39 by which itis secured to the crank case 10 of the motor. A gear 40 is keyed upon the shaft 34, being arranged 'fordriving the latter, andis itself driven by the `motor from any suitable gearing, ynot shown.v
It will be seen that the pump impeller 33 is mounted adjacent the rear end of the shaft 34 and upon the forward end of said shaft there is a governor 41 which comprises ball members 42 pivoted at 43 and arranged to be drawn yieldingly toward the center of the yshaft by springs 44. j4
For the purpose of communicating the governor action to the remote end of the driving shaftr34, the latter'is made hollow or of tubularL form and a rod 45 passes through and is yadaptedto slide within said shaft 34. At its forward end the rod 45 provided with a cross pin 46, shown best 1n Cri Fig. 2, which pin operates in slots 47 formed in the-shaft 34 andis acted upon by yolres 48 on the ball members 42 of the governor. In Fig. l the governor is shown in idle position and it will be understood that as the shaft 34 is rotated the ball members 42 will be rocked upon their pivots 43, and tlnfough the yokes 48 and pin 4G the rod 45 will be moved forwardly.
The rear end of the driving shaft 34 extends from the pump to an opening 49 formed in the casing 31 so that this part of the shaft forlns a housing for the rod 45. The shaft 34 and rod 45 are coaxially arranged with the rods Z7 and 18 and the extremefrear end of the rod 45 contacts with the forward end of the rod 27 and thereby determines the position of the latter rod. It will `be understood that the spring 44 of the governor is of sufficient strength to overcome the sln'ings 28 and 17 so that when the governor is at rest as shown in Fig. l the said springs 28 and 17 will be compressed and the throttle 22 and valve 13 will be in open position. Upon the governor acting as above described, the forward movement of the rod 45 permits the springs 28 and 1T to act upon their respective valves to partly or wholly close them, depending upon the action of the governor balls or speed of rotation of the shaft 34. If the motor reaches the maximum speed allowed by the governor with ay small opening of the throttle valve 22, which it will do of course only under a light load, the valve 13 also will be nearly or perhaps fully closed, thus restricting the passage of oil to the cylinder walls 11, but ify the motor requires a fulloijiening of. the throttle to makeit reach its maximum speed, or anything under its maximum, which will of course indicate a full load on the motor, the oil valve 13 will be wide open and oil will freely pass to the cylinder-,walls to supply the extra lubrication needed under those conditions.
It will be understood that the band control and throttleQl is for use in controlling the motor for speeds below its maximum, the operator having no power to operate the motorV above the speed at which the governor isset.
Having thus described. my invention, what I: claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent` is:-
1. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, ay throttle valve forl the motor, a motor oiling device having a valve therein, a governoir,` and means connecting the governor wthboth ofV said valves for opening said valves when the governor is idle..
2. In-a hydrocarbon motor, in combination,.a spring closedA throttle valve, a motor orilingV device having a spring closed oil valve therein, and a governor and connections for holding said valves open while the governor is idle.
3. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a hollow shaft supported and driven by Athe Inotor, a rod alined with and axially spaced from said shaft, and comic-ted to operate the motor throttle, a governor operated by the shaft, and connections from Athe governor to said rod through said hollow shaft.
4. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a hollow shaft supported and driven by the motor, a rod axially alined with said shaft and connected to operate the motor throttle, a governor operated by the shaft, and a rod extending through the shaft and connected to said governor and said alined rod.
5. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a hollow shaft supported and driven by the motor, a rod axially alined with said shaft and connected to operate the motor throttle, an oil valve operating rod also alined with the shaft, a governor, and connections from the governor for operating both of said rods.
6. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a` hollow shaft supported and driven by the motor, a rod axially alined with said shaft and connected to operate the motor throttle, an oil valve operating rod also alined with the shaft, a governor, and connections from the governor for operating both of said rods one through the other.
7. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a centrifugal governor, a motor throttle, connections for operating the throttle, a casing for said connections, a hollow shaft for operating said governor, said shaft extending into said casing, and a rod operated by the governor andextending through said shaft into said casing for cooperating with said throttle connections. 8. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a centrifugal pump mounted on the motor and having a hollow operatingr shaft passing entirely through the pump casing, a governor operated by said shaft on one side of said pump, throttle operating connections on the'other side of said pump, and a rod operated by the governor and extending through said shaft to said connections.
9. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a motor throttle valve, a governor, a rod` operated endwise by the governor, a swinging arm connected to said throttle valve and adapted to be operatedl by said rod, and a sprlng separate from saidv governor and acting directly against said arm to affect the operation of the governor.

In a hydrocarbonmotor, in combination, a motor throttle valve, a governor, a rod operated endwise by the governor, a swinging arm connected to said throttle valve and adapted to be operated by said rod, and a spring acting directly against said arm to yieldingly close the throttle as said rod is moved endwise by the governor.
11.
