To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, FRANK P. SAWDERS and J AMES Gr. MURRAY, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented a new and useful Tm proverncnt in Carrier-Bearings, of which improvement the following is a specification.
Our invention relates in particular to hangers for shaft bearings for use in motor driven vehicles.
Our invention has for its objects, to provide a hanger combined with a lubricating reservoir, adapted for the reception of a suitable roller bearing, such as the well known Hyatt type, drive shaft disposed between the transmission gear and rear axle drive mechanism, and to provide means for its lubrication. Other objects are, to make the same dustproof, simple in construction, of few parts, etc.
lVith the above objects in view, the invention consists in certain features of construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, we have shown one embodiment of our invention, wherem Figure 1 is a front elevation of said embodiment, and Fig. 2s a vertical section through the center thereof.
The device comprises the main member or hanger portion proper 1, of semi-circular form at its lower end and entirely surrounded by a flange 2, there being also a transversely disposed integral flange 3 dividing the lower part into an oil reservoir. This reservoir portion has an annular centrally disposed integral flange 4 forming the inner wall of the reservoir, said reservoir being supplied from a suitable source through the inlet pipe connection 5. The pocket R formed by the surrounding flange 4:, is intended to inclose the roller bearing (not shown) of Hyatt or other suitable type. In the center of the back wall of this pocket, is formed an opening 6 having an extended annular groove 7 thereabout within which is fitted a felt or other suitable washer 8, the internal diame-' ter of which is a little less than that of the shaft to be employed in the bearing. bearing pocket, is a tight fitting cover 9, secured in place by screws 10. This cover is provided with an opening 11, having annular grooved extension 12 and felt washer 13 therein, corresponding to that in the rear wall of the reservoir. On the inner or chamber side of the cover is formed the segmental strips 14 to engage on the annular flange 4, the spaces 15 between said segments forming the feed ports for the lubricant to pass from the chamber to the pocket and submerge the bearing therein. The upper end. of the hanger is provided with openings 16 by which the same may be attached to a suitable support 18 of the vehicle frame by rivets 17, or otherwise.
In practice, the roller bearing, preferably of the open type Hyatt, is clamped tightly in position, within the pocket R, between and by the cover and rear wall thereof, the
shaft fitted to the bearing passing through at its upper end to be fixedly attached to a support and having on its lower portion an 7 integral flanged shaft bearing pocket within which is formed a shaft opening, said flanged pocket being surrounded by a second integral flange forming therebetween an oil reservoir, a cover having a shaft opening therein and secured over and forming a removable head for both the reservoir and pocket and adapted to engage and clamp a bearing in said pocket, and dust excluding said pocket communicating with the reservoir by ports disposed thereabout at the cover side thereof. 2. A vertically disposed member adapted at its upper end to be fixedly attached to a support and having on its lower portion an integral circularly flanged shaft bearing pocket within which is formed a shaft opening, said flanged pocket being surrounded by a second integral flange spaced therefrom and forming an oil reservoir therebetween, a cover having a shaft opening therein and secured over and forming a removable head for both the reservoir and pocket and adaptsigned our names in the presence of two ed 0 engalge1 and cllzmllp a bearingfin slaid subscribing Witnesses.
