Be it known that I, I-IAIWEY A. MAILLOUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time-Controlled Furnace-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to means for operating the draft and check dampers of stoves, furnaces, and like heating devices, and particularly to a time actuated device of this character.
The general object of my invention is to provide improved mechanism for the purpose of automatically closing a check draft damper and opening the draft door of a furnace, hot water boiler, or any other heater of like character.
A further object is to provide a construction of this character including a weight supported on a trap door, the weight and trap door being so constructed that the weight will not catch when the latch of the trap door is released, but it will be caused to fall to the full length of the cord or cable to which the weight is connected to thereby actuate the check draft damper and the draft door, and in this connection to so form the weight that it may be so disposed upon the trap door normally supporting it that there will be very little weight on the trigger holding the trap door in place so i that there will be very slight frictional resistance to the release of this trigger by an alarm clock, it being obviously necessary that the resistance to the movement of the time actuated mechanism shall be as slight as possible.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a steam boiler or heater with my draft controlling appliance connected thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the frame supporting the draft controlling mechanism, the frame being partly in section; and
Fig. 3 is a like view to Fig. 1, but showing the device as applied to another form of steam boiler or heater.
Referring to these drawings, 10 designates a hot water boiler of any usual or suitable construction, 11 designating the draft lug 19 at its lower end. Extending downward from the top member 20 of the frame is a hanger 21 having pivoted thereto a trapdoor 22 which normally extends over in position to be engaged by the lug on the latch 18 so that it is held in a horizontal position. The upper end of the hanger 21 is vertically slotted, and disposed in this slot is a pivoted latch 23 having a lug 24 at its upper end, and this latch is connected by means of a flexible connection 25 to a weight 26. This flexible connection is shown as passing through an eye 27. This weight 26 is normally supported by the trap 22 and when the trap door is released, the Weight falls, drawing the latch 23 laterally.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1, there is a cord or wire 30 which extends through an eye 28 and has at its lower end a loop or ring 29 through which the lever 24 passes. The cord 30 extends through the eye 28 to an eye or pulley 31 and then extends downward and is attached to the check door 12. The check door in Fig. 1 is provided with a weight 32 which normally urges it to a closed position and attached to this check door is a cord which passes up through an eye or pulley 34, then to a pulley or eye 3:), and then downward, where it is attached to the draft door 11. Now it is obvious that when the trap 22 is released by the release of the latch 23, the weight 26 will drop and release the latch 23, thus releasing the cord 27 and the check door 12 will close under the weight 32, thus drawing on the cord 33 and lifting the draft door 11.
In Fig. 3 I show how the device is applied to a steam boiler 10 provided with the draft door 11 and the check door 12. This form of boiler is provided with a pivoted, weighted arm 36, one end of which is connected to the draft door 11 and the opposite end of which is connected to the check door 12. The cord or wire 30 is the same as the cord 30 and passes through the eyes or pulleys 28 and 31, as before, but instead of ex tending to the draft door 12 it extends to the arm 36 so that when the trigger or latch 18 is released and the latch 28 is released, as a consequence the Weight on the arm 36 will cause the closing of the check door and the opening of the draft door.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the weight 26 has a length less than the distance between the trap door 22 and the top member 20, and that the face of the weight is beveled, at 37. By this means, this weight must be disposed, as shown in Fig. 3, with its beveled face against thehanger 2 1, the weight extending diagonally upward and at itsupper end resting against the wall of the casing 14L, and that in this position the downward pressureof the weight- 26 is exerted adjacent the pivotal point of the trap door 22 so that very little weight is borne by the lever 19 on trigger 18. Thus there is very little frictional resistance to the movement of this trigger under the action of the clapper or vibratory member 16.
It willbe' seen that my device is very simple and that it has been found thoroughly' effective. It is also obvious that it may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention as stated in the appended claims in many'ways.
I claim i l. A controlling mechanism including a supporting frame having a trap door pivoted' at one end, a trigger mounted on said frame; adjacent the free end of the door and normally engaging the door, a time controlled mechanism carried by said frame and engaged with said latch to cause it to release at a predetermined moment, and a weight restin upon thedoor and having a flexible connection extending therefrom, a latch mounted upon said frame with which said flexible connection is engaged to cause the retraction of the latch upon the fall of the Weight, and a second flexible connection having a member with which said latch normally engages' A controlling mechanism ofthe character described including a supportingv frame, a hanger depending from the frame in spaced relation thereto, a trap door pivoted to' said hanger, a trigger mounted on said [frame and normally engaging the free edgeof the door, time controlled means for releasing said trigger from its engagement with the door and mounted 011 the frame, 7
and a weight having a flexible connection extending therefrom and normally disposed between the hanger and the frame, the lower edge of said weight being beveled so that the weight may be disposed diagonally between the hanger and the frame with its lowest corner resting upon the door adjacent its pivotal point.

A controlling mechanism of the character described includingv a rectangular member, a trap door pivoted to onenwall of said rectangular member. and normally extending across the bottom thereof, a trigger mounted on said rectangular member and normally engaging the free edge of the door to hold it raised, time controlled means for releasing said trigger from its engagement with the door, and a weight having a flexible connection extending therefrom and, normally disposed in said rectangular mem her, the lower edge of. said weight being beveled so that the weight may be disposed diagonally within the rectangular member with its lowest corner .restingupon the door adjacent its pivotal point.
