UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COLLAPS I BLE BABY AND WHEELING CHAIR AND CARRIAGE.
Application filed November 2, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DIRK LODEWIJK Konmmn, architect, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Dordrecht, Dul'ibeldamschew'eg 45 the Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Collapsible Baby and Vheeling Chairs and Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible baby and wheeling chairs and carriages of the type comprising two pair of legs suitably hinged together, one pair of said legs being hinged to the uprights forming the back.
In the United States patent specification No. 1256701 a collapsible baby and wheeling chair and carriage of this type has been described characterized by the combination with twopair of legs suitably hinged or pivoted together of arm rests or upper members supported by uprights hinged to one pair of legs to form the back, and by the top portion of the other pair. of legs, a suspended link pivotally mounted to each arm rest for supporting the front end of the seat and the rear end of the footboard and means for supporting the rear end of the seat and the front end of the footboard.
The present invention has for its object to provide for means whereby a chair or carriage of this type may be used also as a cradle or a childrens bed and may so be folded and unfolded as well.
In order that my present invention may be readily understood andcarriedinto effect the same will be fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a baby chair serving at the same time as a carriage, a cradle and a childrens bed, in its unfolded position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same in the folded position.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of. an embodiment of the invention exclusively for use as a cradle or childre'ns bed, in its opened position.
Fig. i is a side elevation of same in the folded position.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification of the cradle in the unfolded position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Serial No. 260,835.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of same in the folded position; while Fig. 7v is a side elevation of same in a lowered position.
In all of the figures the pair-of legs 1 are pivotally attached to the uprights 2 of the backor the head of the cradle, the other pair of legs 3 being pivoted to the pair of legs 1 by a pivot 4i.
In the embodiment according to Figs. 1 and 2 the uprights 2 are hinged to the seat 5 and the armrests or upper members 6, the latter being extended according to the length of the bottom 7,. which forms at the same time the footboard, and carrying the leaf of the table 8. The bottom 7 is pivotally supported by the armrests or upper members 6 by means of a plurality of suspended links 9 hinged to said bottom and said upper members.
The back end of the bottom is hinged to the uprights 2. The front end of the upper members is adapted to engage the top of the pair of legs 8, which are locked in the unfolded position by means of hinged connecting rods 10. The legs are mounted on wheels 11, while a handle 12 is pivotally attached to the top of the pair of legs 3 and may be locked in the position shown in Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 3 and t the seat as well as the table is removed, while the uprights 2 are shortened. The pair of legs 1, 8 are mounted on rollers 13 and the handle has been omitted. This embodiment exclusively serves for use as a cradle or a chil lrens bed. From a construetive point of viewthis embodiment is almost similar to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The top of the pair of legs 1 however is connected with the lower end. of the uprights 2 instead of being connected therewith at'an intermediate point.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 57 the upper members 6 of the cradle are provided with extended portions 14%, detachably hinged to the top of the pair of legs 3 by means of links 15, hinged to said extended portions. The uprights 20f the head of the cradle are provided with guides '16 for guiderods 17 secured to the pair of legs 3. if
The construction hasbeen made so that by turning the links 15 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 7 the cradle isbrought in the lower position according to Fig. 7, the guiderods then being entirely slid into the guides 16. When it is desired to adjust the cradle in the higher position, the foot has only to be placed on the connecting rod, not shown on the drawing, of the left rollers 13 of the legs 3 and the cradle to be pulled upward in order to bring the different parts in the position shown in Fig. 5. Notwithstanding the fact that in this embodiment the hinged connect-- ing rods of the pairs of legs 1, 3 locking them in the unfolded position have been omitted, the cradle is stabilized in the higher as well as in the lower position owing to the suitable arrangement of the guides 10 and the guiderods 17.
A partition or wall 18 is arranged at the foot of the cradle so as to form a closure at this end.
The extended portions 14 of the edges of the cradle may form a boxshaped whole, containing for instance washing utensils or the like. 7
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
In a collapsible baby and wheeling chair and carriage of the type referred to, adapted for use also as a cradle or a childrens bed, the combination with the upper members of the cradle or bed, of extended portions, links detachably connecting said portions, to the top of the pair of legs means for connecting said pair of legs indirectly to the uprights form ing the head of the cradle, in such a manner that the cradle or the bed may be placed in a lower position, guides secured to the head of the cradle or bed, and guiderods attached'to the pair of legs connected indirectly to the head of the cradle or bed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DIRK LODEVVIJ K KOHLMAN.
